THE APOSTROPHE (pub. Sinclair Research; authors: Blackboard Software) The program is loaded in three sections: 1. Program title and logo 2. Bytes containing graphics and machine code routines 3. Main program Using the program Instructions for operating the program are given at every stage. The program gives practice in the use of the apostrophe. It contains only brief examples, being intended as an accompaniment to a lesson rather than as an alternative to one. A list of useful books to give further instruction and practice is given below. There are twenty sentences in the memory, which are selected at random. To put in the apostrophe, the student has to use three keys - 5 to move the moving figure to the left, 8 to the right and 6 to put in the apostrophe. The student has to complete ten sentences correctly and is then rewarded with a game which gives practice in finding letters, numbers and symbols on the keyboard. The exercise routine includes moving graphics, and sound. The program gives a final score and, if the printer is attached, will print a certificate with the student's name. Altering the program The program gives you the option of entering your own exercise sentences. Instructions are included in the program and the following rules apply: 1. To work out the value of variable Z for your new sentence, count the number of characters/spaces before the apostrophe and let Z equal that number + 1. 2. The total of letters, punctuation marks and spaces in the sentence must be less than 30. Saving the new program The routine for saving a new version is as follows: 1. Put an unused tape in your recorder and prepare for recording. 2. Type SAVE "program name" LINE 9000: SAVE "b" CODE 65024,512 3. Press RECORD on the tape recorder. 4. Press ENTER on the Spectrum. 5. Press any key and watch the screen for further instructions. 6. If you wish to check that the program has been recorded correctly: type VERIFY "program name": VERIFY "b" CODE 65024,512. Rewind the tape and press PLAY on the recorder. This routine is not included in the program. If the screen shows the message "O.K." after running through the program and the bytes, then they have both been correctly recorded.
