COMP-U-SHARE Investment Management System from Micromega COMP-U-SHARE is intended for use by lay people; every effort has been made to make it clear to users with little technical knowledge of investment management. No responsibility is accepted for possible misrepresentation or omission arising from the need to simplify a complex subject, and the Compilers and Marketers of the programme will accept no liability for any loss alleged to be caused by reliance on this programme howsoever caused. The programme is subject to copyright. Copying of programme material either on paper or from the programme tape, by direct copying or saving from the computer, or reproduction by any other means without specific written authorisation from the copyright holders is expressly forbidden. INTRODUCTION COMP-U-SHARE manages your investment portfolio quickly and easily. It monitors the key factors measuring investment performance, but as with any computer programme it is important to understand the limitations - it cannot substitute for good judgement and analysis in selecting investment opportunities. HOW TO LOAD COMP-U-SHARE COMP-U-SHARE is suitable for use with the Spectrum with 48K of RAM, and MICROMEGA assume that your computer is correctly set up with the tape heads cleaned, and the correct volume and tone settings. To load the programme enter LOAD "share" or LOAD "", press ENTER and start your cassette player. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS COMP-U-SHARE is extremely easy to use but you should still read this User Guide carefully to obtain the maximum benefit. The programme offers a choice from standard "menus" each of which is explored below. It contains details of stockbroking commissions and the jobbers 'turn', which differ for shares, loan stocks, and unit trusts, and so maintains a distinction between these types of investment. The capacity is 36 items in any mix. LOAD DATA allows you to load data previously saved onto a separate data tape, and obviously cannot be used until you have created a data file (See below - SAVE DATA). To use this facility enter a datafile name up to a maximum of 8 characters, and then follow carefully the instructions on the screen. LIST RECORDS lists of the items currently on the computer. The only allowed responses are "E" to return you to the main menu or "R" for a second page if there are more than 30 records. Note that index numbering commences at 10. INPUT NEW DATA prompts for the data for a new share, loan stock or unit trust, and a powerful edit capability allows easy correction of errors. The inputs appear in the following sequence: NAME must not be longer than eight letters and the first character must not be a space. TYPE is accompanied by a sub-menu of the valid responses. MONTH AND YEAR OF PURCHASE requires the format MMYY - two digits for the month and two for the year, so June 1981 would be 0681. If you do not wish to record the data input "C". QUANTITY PURCHASED must be between 1 and 99999. TOTAL COST must be between 1 and 99999 pounds to the nearest pound. PRESENT PRICE should be whole pence up to a maximum of 1000 (£10). YIELD may be either pounds to the nearest pound or a percentage. A zero yield is entered as zero. For the pound option input your dividend or interest receipts in whole pounds up to £9999; for a percentage press "U" and input to one decimal place up to 99.9. Note that if zero is input for the present price (see above) the yield will set to zero. P/E RATIO (price/earnings ratio) will be prompted for shares only, and may be between zero and 99.9 to one decimal place. The computer will now list all the data. If you are satisfied input "C" to continue; otherwise press "E" to move into edit mode, and follow the on-screen instructions. When you have corrected all the errors press 'C". MODIFY DATA allows data to be edited. The Screen will display a sub-menu with the following items: (1) INDEX NUMBER; (2) NAME; (3) DELETE; and (4) EXIT; allowing you to specify the item to be modified by either Index Number (remember that index numbers Start at 10) or Name (input 1 or 2), to delete a record completely (input 3), or to return directly to the main menu (input 4). If you select Index Number a further sub-menu will allow input of the Index Number directly or via a listing of all the records. Name prompts for the name of the record to be modified. A valid name will branch automatically into Edit Mode (see above); the computer will not respond to any other input, so if you are not sure of the name do not select this option. Delete results in a sub-menu, allowing deletion to be specified by Index Number (1), Name (2) or through a record listing (3). Input (4) will return to the Main Menu with no changes made. Note that the computer will not respond to any input except a valid Index Number or Name if either of those delete input options have been selected, so select a record listing for deletion if you are not sure of the Index Number or Name. DISPLAY RESULTS displays one of the four detailed reports prepared by COMP-U-SHARE. The four report titles are SUMMARY, STATUS, REALISABLE VALUE and STATISTICS. The report contents are as follows: SUMMARY STATUS Quantity held Gain or loss. Cost Percent gain or loss. Value Dividend in pounds. Dividend in pounds Dividend yield in percent. Totals Totals REALISABLE VALUE STATISTICS Net Value Percentage gain or loss Net gain or loss Percentage dividend yield Percentage net gain or loss P/E ratio Dividend in pounds Percentage net gain or loss Totals Totals (except P/E ratio) Note that the realisable value report includes estimates for the broker's commission and the likely 'turn' relative to the middle prices quoted in most newspapers. The values included in the programme are estimated long run averages and may not be exactly applicable to a particular transaction. The values used are: SHARES LOAN STOCKS Jobbers turn of 1.25% Jobbers turn 1.25% Brokers commissions: £10 up to a value of £1000 £15 up to a value of £1000 1.65% up to a value of £7000 0.80% up to a value of £2500 0.50% above £7000 0.25% above £2500 No charges are included for unit trusts. Selecting the appropriate report, a list of the records currently in memory will be shown. You may return to the Main Menu with "E" or select all stocks with "A"; to select a subset input "I", followed by the index numbers of the chosen records. Finish the selection sequence with "C", after which the report will appear. If the screen is too small you may input "C" to see a second page. The total on the first page is the sub-total for that page, while the total on the second page is for all records selected. SAVE DATA stores onto a data tape the investment records built up. The programme will prompt for a datafile name, and then show you step by step instructions on the screen. After saving of the datafile is complete you will have the option to verify that saving has been correctly carried out.
