MAP Software MSS9 RAIDER 41 Computer Game For the 48K Spectrum M.A.P. Software, P.O. Box 35, Wolsey House, Wolsey Road, Hemel Hempstead, Herts, HP2 4SS Tel: 0442 41221 The Setting It is early 1941. Following the loss of the Graf Spee the Kriegs— marine have sent another Pocket Battleship raiding in the South Atlantic and you have been given command, Your orders are to sink as much merchant shipping as possible. avoiding contact with enemy warships. and to make a safe return to your home port of Wilhelmshaven. As the program begins you are cruising off the South American Coast searching for suitabletargets. The British are aware that you are in the vicinity and are operating a convoy system. Owing to a lack of warships only half the convoys can be escorted and these have just one Armed Merchant Cruiser in company. There are however cruiser hunting groups searching for you each of which has two 6 inch gun cruisers and one 8 inch gun cruiser. Should you encounter a hunting group and are unable to disengage you will be obliged to try and sink all three cruisers and will almost certainly suffer severe damage and may even be sunk yourself. Also in the area is your supply ship which you will occasionally meet and from which you can obtain more fuel, spare parts for your aircraft and materials to repair damage and thus improve your Fighting Value. When your fuel/ammunition/fighting value is running low you may decide to head for home. You will have the opportunity to do this after each coastal sweep. A sweep can be shortened by steering off the screen. To go home you must have at least 70% fuel remaining and will be warned when you are nearing this limit. If you allow your fuel to drop below 70% you may continue raiding for a while but will eventually have to put into a Neutral Portwhere you will be interned unless your Supply Ship meets you first and refuels you — but don't count on it! On arrival in Northern Latitudes you will have to break through the British Blockade to your home port. You may be intercepted by cruisers. AMCs or. while South of Iceland, elements of the Home Fleet. lt is generally safer to go North of Iceland but this will use more fuel. As you approach the North Sea you may come under air attack from Coastal Command. lf and when you arrive home you will receive your just reward! Loading the program lnsert the cassette into the tape recorder and type LOAD "". Now start the tape ('Play') and press the ENTER key. The process of loading will take approximately 4 minutes during which time flash— ing lines will be seen at the edge of the screen and the title will appear on the screen. If the program fails to load the volume and/or the tone control may need adjusting. In case of difficulty refer to your computer manual. Hints on playing Control keys are displayed on screen together with relevant prompts and information. If you wish to remain where you are. press a letter key instead of the Cursor keys. (Not D or A). Part 1 Three convoy routes are indicated. Target vessels will be steaming along two of these directions at any given time. Not all targets steer straight courses but at some point they will all leave or enter the Estuary which is a good place to look but beware ofthe logical consequences! Sometimes you may obtain a Radio Direction Finding bearing showing the current target position which may be near enough for you to intercept. You can use your Arado aircraft to search as well and it will detect any targets it passes directly over but not their composition or course although you should be able to work this out after a while. You must place your ship on the target position in order to make contact, Part 2 Convoys will scatter when sighted and if there is an escort it will bring you to action. You can move and fire when indicated by the flashing prompts. When firing you will be asked for the compass bearing, (8 directions — SE, N. NW etc ) and range. Merchant ships are sunk by one salvo. AMCs are a little harder and you must choose whether to dispose of them while the convoy scatters or accept damage while concentrating on the merchantmen. If you are brought to action by cruisers then you will have a real fight on your hands, especially if they are able to attack you simultaneously. When seriously damaged their firepower will be reduced and fewer shells will come your way. Likewise if your Fighting Valuefalls to 6,000 half your guns will be put out of action as well. Part 3 The quickest way home is not necessarily the safest but if you are low on fuel and have plenty of Fighting Value points remaining it may be the best. You cannot use your aircraft in the North Atlantic but you may find that the weather conditions make it easier to avoid the British patrols. On the other hand il you are suddenly sighted by Home Fleet ships at short range you will suffer indeed — you cannot sink a battlship or battlecruiser!
