Unipolbrit FDD a clone of the TMX Portugal FDD/FDD-3000, possibly made by Timex in Poland. It was reported in 1986, that TMX Portugal sold over 800,000 TC2048, TC2068 and FDD-3000 units to an un-named entity in Poland. It is unclear whether the Unipolbrit machines are simply re-labeled Portuguese units or if they were actually manufactured in Poland. The name "Unipolbrit" is said to be derived from UNIted States, POLand and BRITain. Unipolbrit also has a Spectrum Emulator cartridge for their UK2086 computer.

Other Floppy Disk Interfaces

LarKen Automation (nee, Electronics) (TS1000/1500/ZX81 & TS2068/ZX Spectrum) - The LarKen TS2068/Spectrum disk system came as two components: an LKDOS cartridge and the actual disk interface. The cartridge plugs into the dock port and the interface onto the rear buss expander. The interface board has a feed through of the 2068 buss to allow connecting addtional peripherals. The LKDOS cartridge also came in versions for the Oliger, Aerco and Ramex interfaces listed below and some had the option of having a Spectrum emulator, on another eprom, on the LKDOS cartridge. I know of at least a couple people who, using the LKDOS cart, have more than one disk interface, i.e., LarKen and Oliger, in use at the same time. Knowing that each interface can drive 4 floppies you can see the possibilities of this. I have also heard that someone was going to try to get a LarKen/Oliger/Aerco combination going. I do not know if that was successful.

LarKen Electronics also provided a RAM Disk (64K, 128K or 256K) that could be used as another disk drive to store your most used programs. With the RAMdisk you had the same capabilites as if 5 disk drives were connected to your system. The RAM Disk is backed up by battery and is a very nice addition to your system. With an autoload program as soon as you turn on the computer your program listing is waiting for your command. The interface also has NMI (snapshot) capabilities and lets you save snapshots to the RAM Disk as well as floppies, and includes a Kempston-compatible joystick interface.
The LarKen 1000 (TS1000/TS1500/ZX81) disk system is a single bare board that plugs onto the TS1000/1500/ZX81 buss. You have to provide +5v and +12v power to the board with your own power supply as well as provide your own disk drives. LDOS, the Larken 1000 operating system, is very user-friendly, flexible, and easy to modify for personal preferences. LDOS, which is provided on a 2K eprom, allows storage of 52 files per disk with a maximum file size of 47040 bytes. There are 6 commands available on the eprom: LOAD, SAVE, DIRECTORY, FORMAT, EXIT and DELETE. Other commands such as, COPY, were provided on a disk supplied with the interface. The board also has a buss for adding your peripherals, i.e., printer, RAM packs, etc.

John Oliger Company (JLO) (TS1000/1500/ZX81 & TS2068/ZX Spectrum) - The JLO TS2068 disk system starts with an expansion board that plugs into the TS2068 buss and has 4 slots for adding other boards. Disk Board 'A' has the Oliger SAFE DOS operating system and Disk Board 'B' actually controls the drives. You can also add a centronics printer interface and other items, such as an eprom burner, to the main expansion board. You can have a switch installed on Disk Board 'A' to shut off the DOS for use with the LarKen DOS cartridge. Also has NMI capability. This company is still in business.

AERCO [Acme Electric Robot COmpany] - Aerco FD-ZX (TS1000/1500/ZX81) & Aerco FD-68 (TS2068) - the FD-68 interface is 4 inches tall and 6 inches wide with a through edge connector for adding other peripherals. It had the capability of having a 256K RAMdisk (in 64K banks) onboard, and had CP/M-like capability if you upgraded the system eprom. Adding 256K to the interface required an additional power supply and some re-wiring of the board to add a new circuit for the power supply. Later versions of the system eprom made the interface compatible with Spectrum emulators that plugged into the computer's motherboard (it did not work with emulators in the dock port). This has a small board mounted on the top edge of the interface to allow the user to turn off the Aerco DOS and enable the Larken DOS, or vice versa. Ramex - Millenia K (TS2068) - one of the first disk interfaces available for the TS2068. This was made in England, originally for the ZX Spectrum, and was imported by Ramex. The Millenia K operating system was SPDOS.

COMPUSA (TS1000/ZX81) - 2 models: FIZ & FDC - Easy to use, very user-friendly operating system. The FDC evolved from the FIZ interface. The FDC is not recommended for use with the TS1500 uless you have a buss extender. While it can be set up if you are careful, the 1500 has it's connectors on the back of the computer and the interface gets in the way of hooking up some of the cables.
