Hi everyone and welcome to the December 2017 edition of the "Which Is Best?" and the last of the 2nd series (started back in Dec' 2015).
Last month I placed the two Barbarian games by Palace software against each other asking which in your minds was the better game, a big turn out for this edition and I can now reveal Barbarian 1 stormed to victory over Barbarian II by 50 votes to 13, many felt the maze play on the sequel was too confusing and resulting in getting lost causing short longevity for love of the game,...even though I personally enjoy it and mastered it ;-D

To end the 2nd series I'm going to place two Amiga A500 breakout games against each other, Arkanoid and Giganoid, which do you think is the better game?!, only your votes will determine that,...happy voting! :-D

I'd heard so much about it that I bought the DVD yesterday and quit after an hour of gruelling, depressing, difficult to follow and frankly pretty boring crap.It has all the right components but they're treated dismissively, for example that very unusual robot helper, a bit of an explanation would have made it so much more useful as a player. At least HAL got an intro in 2001. Frankly I had expected something rather like another 2001, not nearly an hour of hand wringing guilt trip about dust storms and teenage daughter angst (my least favourite theme).

Michael Caine at least earns his money which is more than can be said for most of the cast. At the very beginning it reminded me a bit of 'Encounters of the 3rd kind'(?) with James Caan, similar sort of bloke, somewhat similar mysterious premonitions type setting.

Far too much is left to your own imagination or perhaps quick wittedness or my lack thereof. Ghost? What ghost? Where was the binary message - was it the dust lines on the floor? Buggered if I could tell. Please don't insult our intelligence if you are playing the sci-fi card expect some engineering expertise in your audience. A solar powered drone aloft for five years? Oh really, give it a rest. The giant wave was a bit much too, especially given the high gravity the girl complains of!

What a shame. Still I have to watch the rest, perhaps it will end up on a high note but I somehow doubt it.

So, with my shiny new graphics card, I headed over to look what is on Steam. Before I sign up for an account is it any good?

I certainly had fun looking at the titles:

Bad:
Milky Books (WTF??)
http://store.steampowered.com/app/747100/MILKY_BOOBS/

Genital Jousting: (WTF x2)
http://store.steampowered.com/app/469820/Genital_Jousting/

The Showering With Your Dad Simulator (CSGC idea if ever I saw one)
http://store.steampowered.com/app/359050/Shower_With_Your_Dad_Simulator_2015_Do_You_Still_Shower_With_Your_Dad/

Dream Daddy: a dad dating simulator:
The description is as follows. "Dad Dating Simulator is a game where you play as a Dad and your goal is to meet and romance other hot Dads. Are you ready? Hi ready, I'm Dad. " That's just weird.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/654880/Dream_Daddy_A_Dad_Dating_Simulator/

Good:
Planet Coaster looks good.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/493340/Planet_Coaster/

Witcher 3:
Looks Amazing, but has mixed reviews:
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/124923/

GTA 5
Looks good, is a staple but I don't fancy playing a crim.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/359320/Elite_Dangerous/

Self pity alert! My sciatica is playing up again, so if anyone can take my mind off it for even a minute with a funny video or joke or whatever then please do so.

It's also making me wonder why evolution never gave us the ability to somehow lessen pain so that we know it's there but it doesn't bother us so much. The purpose of pain is to let us know that something is wrong, but when you're alerted to it, there's no need or benefit to have an endless stream of pain. In fact it's surely counter-productive, since it can distract you from real danger (in evolutionary terms) plus it keeps you from getting necessary sleep.

Anyway, here's a couple of funny videos to kick the thread off

Justice catches up with some idiot vandal (It's a well known video, but it's always funny)

I didn't want to hijack Lee's donations announcement thread, so I thought I'd ask the question I raised there separately.

Is anyone here using Amazon Web Services, either professionally or privately? If so, how are you finding it?

I have a couple of instances running all the time: a web server for my noddy little websites, and a dedicated VPN server. The VPN server is because I live in an area where ADSL is extremely slow, so I use 4G as my home broadband connection. 4G has limitations, but having a VPN exit point in a London data centre makes life a lot easier.

The machines Lee's considering as a new WoS server struck me as totally inappropriate, but it seems he doesn't get much flexibility from his supplier. I suspect an AWS "t2.small" instance would serve the WoS website for about £200pa. I don't know what sort of load the WoS database generates, but I got the impression it wasn't that big as DBs go. I'd try it on a separate, similar machine, or maybe inside their dedicated DB service.

I've always found S3 to be an excellent facility, designed for exactly the job of storing and serving things like images and binary blobs. The access controls, which can do things like limit access to contents to going through an API, are very flexible. And at maybe £70 per TB, it's remarkably cheap.

Anyway, it was just a thought triggered by the idea of paying 5 grand a month for a web server!

After using the program (Paint Shop Pro 9), and shutting down the other program I had running (Chrome), I am left with my seeing my desktop ... it's nearly empty.

I am left with a select few things on the desktop, I have a few shortcuts to programs, one old folder, and a couple of drawings I was working on (Yes, I do save stuff to the desktop. I eventually move things to where I want them to be).

Anyways, just wondering where the freakin' faffin' a! all of my stuff went!!!!!!!?????

It's so random, what I am left with. There is no rhyme nor reason as to what disappeared or stayed. I'm talking about probably 30 odd files, folders, etc. And it's not in the recycle bin, nothing has changed there for a few days. And things do not seem to have been moved anywhere else on the internal HD, as I did a search for the specific file names to no avail.

She may have saved my life. I very nearly stepped on a copperhead snake coiled up in the long grass and she barked and pushed me out of the way. I was so surprised that she had done that because I hadn't noticed the snake even then till she started barking furiously at me and snarling at it as it slithered off into the rock pile nearby.

Then a week later a young stag was surprisingly stroppy probably in rut, it stood there not thirty feet away and looked like it had an attitude problem until Herbert took off after it, growling like she really meant business, hackles up, teeth bared, bloody impressive and the stag took one look and ran for it.

She pranced home head and tail high, she knew she'd been A Good Dog! She's only medium sized too, not some huge brute but she protects me like nobodys business and the funny thing is that she's only my dog by default because she won't go back to her original owner. I like to take two or three long walks per day across the fields and Herbert just got into the habit of following me and eventually refused to leave my side.

I've always been nuts about animals, dogs in particular but this ones the best ever. She's a mutt, don't know what mix, sort of a pitbull body with a labrador face and dalmatian markings (black and white but blotches more than spots). Best friend I have now.

This is a great system whereby delivery drivers can, when they try to deliver to a house where no one is home, unlock and open your front door, and leave the items in your house, awaiting your return. On the plus side, it does come with a camera, so you can see that the delivery person doesn't do anything wrong, on the minus side, the system is connected to the 'net which means it can be hacked (and so the concept of security is non-existent), you're giving some of your own control to a faceless multi-billionaire company, and you're letting strangers into your home, albeit hopefully very briefly and (if the camera works and doesn't get hacked) and monitored for security.

No, I'm not making it up. There's a review of it here:
It's entitled 'The Mars Underground':-
I would hope that this could become an open ended discussion by which I mean that I'm not looking or hoping for a simple agreement or dismissal of the topic.

Ever since as far back as I can remember, I have always believed that keeping all our eggs in one basket does not bode well for the future of our species. I enjoy discussing a wide variety of futurist topics and was greatly encouraged by science fiction writers to consider the pros and cons of human exploration of space.

Wassup WOS, haven't made a thread of my own in a while, but here goes.

I live in a city with a substantial public transport network and we have plenty of trams that run overground, due to other traffic they are subject to delays every now and then.

So there I was, just got onto the platform. There were about a dozen people waiting for the next tram (or "train", who cares). All stations have a "next trains" indicator which shows up to three trains and it is easily visible. It looked something like this (the destination name has been changed to protect the innocent):
13 - Plonkerville - 4 min
13 - Plonkerville - 5 min
13 - Plonkerville - 13 min

What does this tell us? FYI, this particular line is scheduled to run every 10 minutes - so, the 1st one probably was delayed a great deal as it should already have passed this station a couple of minutes ago; the 2nd one is right behind (slowed down by the one right in front of it) and the 3rd one is on schedule.

A few minutes pass, the 1st one arrives. Indicator now shows this:
13 - Plonkerville - Now
13 - Plonkerville - 1 min
13 - Plonkerville - 9 min

Well, the delayed train opens its doors and it is absolutely packed; you can already see the next train right behind it. Do I really need to point out what happened next? Alright then - everyone bar yours truly forced themselves onto the packed train, in some cases the doors would re-open because people were standing too close to the door (safety) sensors ... to add insult to injury, one bloke came running to catch this very train, but alas the doors closed for a last time and it went without him.

I'm just standing there watching this debacle, then a minute later the 2nd train pulls up ... and it is nearly empty.

Over the years, I've observed this lemming-like behaviour literally a hundred times and I simply can't wrap my head around it. It seems (my rough estimate) about 95% of people are completely oblivious to the fact there's another train coming right away (or after no more than 2 or 3 minutes) - no, they just have to get on this one no matter how full it already is, as this it the last train ever, I mean it has to be?
Well, I've been "trolled" maybe 1 or 2 times where the train that should come afterwards then magically vanished from the indicator and never turned up, but this very rarely happens.

Also please note, this was in the afternoon so most people were probably either getting home (well, I was) or had another destination other than work/school, so being late and getting scolded was rather unlikely. In the early morning hours where you don't want to risk possibly missing a connection and be late for work I can understand, but in the afternoon?

Anyone spotted a similar thing in their local place, or are you perhaps part of "the 95%" ;) ?

I now have a dedicated TV/monitor for my room that I can use with any device I have modern and old and too my happy surprise it plays the sound out of my +2B no probs unlike my much newer big TV in the living room. The iMac looks like the first Intel based ones it's 1GB RAM and 150GB hard drive all in one desktop thing. It came with all the install disks all in great condition. It works just fine but what to do with it ? It's running Mac OSX 10.4.11. Suggestions ?

Hi folks,

I'd like to replace two of the transistors in my audio amplifier which I suspect are causing crackling noise in one of the channels. Original ones are 2SC1815-GR and 2SC1815-Y. I looked in the original 1980s Toshiba datasheet (data.datasheetlib.com/pdf1/13/71/137165/images/2sc1815-y_1_bg.jpg) and they are identical except for parameter "hFE" (sorry, but I have no idea what that is).
-Y has this parameter between 120 and 240 while -GR between 200-400.
Neither of the two is produced today but there appears to be a replacement simply named 2SC1815 with no suffix. hFE with the new one is between 70 and 700 as per this datasheet:

https://tme.eu/sk/Document/9c70b503e1c8daf200071af85fb92ed0/2SC1815-DTE.pdf

Is it therefore safe to presume that the new one actually replaces both -GR and -Y?

Thanks.

Why is it these days you just can't play a game? Take Don't Starve for instance, its Saturday morning and I just fancy a quick game. So I hit the icon. But of course I bought it through Steam, so I have to wait for the Steam app to load first. And of course it needs an update (again!). So I wait, wait. (This is where I decide to have a rant).

Finally the login bit loads. Oh yeah, I need to enter my password... But I own the bloody game, I paid for it and bought it.... Nope must put in password.
I wanna go back to the days where I hand over some money, get given the game of my choice and it ends there. I play it. End Of.
When I see the numbers on an SMD resistor, I first convert them into color codes and then into the actual resistance value. So, if I see “121,” my mind goes, Ah-ha! It’s brown, red, brown, so it’s . . . 120 ohms.
Anything I can take for that? Preferably, over the counter.
