Once 1.20 draft seems to be official now I would like to suggest some additiones to do on 1.21. I hope it will be easier to upgrade once block 19 has been finally added, so I start a new discussion with those things that didn't fit on the last update.

Things I wold like to add to the specifications are a couple of fields into archive info as follows:

I think these three are essential for catalog purposes:
- Re-released by (For re-releases, obviously)
- Tie-in licence (for licensed games)
- Series (for series of games like sabreman, willy and others)

Also would be useful to have:
- ISBN, bar code or other codes that can identify the tape
- AKA (for other game names)
- Number of players allowed
- Controls

And maybe would be useful to add a space for credits:
- TZX author (the guy who made the tape)
- TZX app and version

Also adding new hardware infos as suggested by MikeW:
http://www.worldofspectrum.org/forums/showpost.php?p=105708&postcount=106

I would also add suggestions into "Rules and definitions":

- UTF-8 encoding
- How to classify programs: for example "Board game: cards", "Utility: Assembler"...
- I would also suggest this list for Origin field:
* "Original release"
* "Compilation"
* "Re-release"
* "Magazine cover tape"
* "Type-in"
* "Hacked version"
* "Incomplete"
* "Corrupt/Buggy"

Now what's your oppinion? I think it's specially important feedback from the STP project workers :D

Hit an issue with ZX Spin BETA and I am not sure what to do. I have been using ZX Spin BETA on my Windows 7 Professional machine quite happily for months now. I just copied the folder over to my new laptop that is running Windows 7 Home Premium.

When I run the ZX Spin EXE it comes up with a small dialog box labelled ZX Spin and reporting Invalid Image Size. It then goes on to report an Access Violation at address 0050312C in module ZXSpin.exe.

I am running the EXE as the Administrator and even tried Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode.

Any ideas?

Hi all,

I am an experienced LabVIEW progammer and also have fond memories of the spectrum. Thus I started to think about writing my own emulator and have started with some promise although I am not sure I entirely understand some of the OP codes. I am starting to write the non-prefixed opcodes by specifying each state (OP Code) within the emulator. The ones I have written so far are thus

01	LD	BC,nn
02	LD	(BC),A
03	INC	BC

However I am not entirely confident I am doing them correctly. I will explain a couple below with the hope that you might be able to shed some light on the situation. Once I know how to understand the OPcode imstructions correctly I should be able to finish of the prefixed opcodes although I may be back for more Questions if this is ok. The pictures attached should illustrate my code.

Thanks :smile:

Hi Folks,

When using ZXDS I like to run with the Spectrum+ keyboard image (less cluttered). One thing I miss is the symbols ($, #, ? etc.) so I modified the supplied bitamps as follows:

Simply replace the ones in the skins\builtin folder with these and hey presto you get the modified keyboard with symbols!

If anyone would like a copy then please let me know.

Patrik - I hope you do not mind me doing this, it seemed like an easy enhancement to do.

Many thanks

Are there any emulators that allow a distribution whereby I could package them up with a game and a single shortcut to run the emulator + game, then copy that bundle to some PC media and distribute that?

Either as a give-away item, or for sale, or both?

We're looking to distribute the source code for Buzzsaw+ (and probably some other stuff) actually on physical media when people buy the full version on cassette (rather than offering it as an extra ZIP download), and I think it would be good to have a one-click runnable version of the game on there too. But that requires an emulator to go on the disk.

I appreciate it's a bit cheeky to ask for something for free to go in a bundle that's for sale, but on the other hand it's not going to be a particularly profitable exercise all round...

I would have thought that if the original TAP was a bad recording, then surely it wouldnt load up when set to 'fast load', so why do they give up when set to 'normal', yet load when set to run faster?
Just in case there is any interest, I fired up DOSBox earlier and fixed a few long-standing little bugs in the source for SpecEm so that it now assembles using A86 without errors (which is generally how it's supposed to be, I think.)

There are a few other little things I want to do with it before I let it rest for good but for the curious it's up on http://code.google.com/p/specem/ with source and an executable. It's not compatible with 64-bit Windows yet but runs reasonably well in DOSBox or full-screen in 32-bit windows.

Other life stuff is taking precedence so I thought I should just get a working version online while I was at it, as a couple of people have expressed some interest since the 1.0 release in '91.

One useful change is that I have added F9 as a quit key due to a conflict with another program that has (for whatever reason) gained popularity over the years which also uses Alt-Esc.

I should also note that an undocumented feature of the emulator was that F10 triggers the NMI and pages in an alternate ROM. It was intended that this could be loaded from an external file but I never got around to it, so at the moment it's still hard-coded as the Mutlface 1.
Comments and suggestions are welcome.

I have started a project to build a mini arcade machine dedicated to spectrum

The plan is to build a small arcade cabinet no bigger than 15" high and 12" wide
Fill it with some computing hardware
make or purchase a pcb for usb joystick support 'needs to be small'
Build a quality joystick to be housed in the laptop
Install and setup a quality emulator 'not one that needs core duo due to loose coding'

Simples....

I believe it will be achievable but it would be good to get some advice especially on the emulator side, I have never really used a spectrum emulator 'i always play originals, much more fun, if expensive'

Plus if anyone has any comments on anything at all, I'd be grateful.

I will start to document it it today and work in progress at the same time.

I will take photos and upload to my Photobucket.

I hope to make it a very high quality item

...would people recommend?

I'm currently just pottering about with the demo version of Speculator but notice some games stack on it, are there any better ones out there that won't throw a hissy fit near the end of Where Time Stood Still for example?

Aside from that I like the simplicity (ease of use) on it and it seems pretty sound aside from a couple of games.

Hi there,

first time poster, long time lurker etc.

My problem is thus. Using the part of The Lyra II megademo as my example, the one with the dancing lady (man?) in it, I've rarely heard an emulator get that sound quite right. This happens in other musics too. I used to wonder if it was a problem with the rom image, or the tape image or my ears, or the passage of time or what have you. But it doesn't sound right at all. I've only ever heard one emulator get it right and I can't for the life of me remember which one it is...

I'm only using that megademo as example because I know it's a good benchmark! Any flanging of notes is met with that problem, both 48k and 128k.

This may be a well known thing... I've used a few external players, but none seem to get it right. Grr.

I hope people know what I mean and I'm not going completely bonkers. :(

Yours,

please help can we see clearly which emulator emaulates which hardware
is there any that has a pc function key for the mulitface nmi button and the +d nmi button please?
only real spectrum has dma from mb-02+ support?

interface1disciple network is/is not compatibel with spectrenet ethernet or matrix usb?
cant emaultor programmers cooperate a bit more with each other to reduce the workload?
which emulator has full tv reproduction so far only 81 had pretty convincing ula interference but now dot crawl and ula snow - though these are not the technical names for the white fuzz that follows sprites on black backgrounds due to phosphorous delay and the dot crawl was some kind of radiation fuzz due to synchronisation
is anyone adding sam coupe support to spectrum emaultors please
sim koupe has no tap tzx file support and cant even read a real hdf aotm lite compact flash card when connected to the pc in a usb memory card reader please help
the ula+ is only for the harlequin? wont be sold as an interface?
so far the bbc basic for the speccy doesnt support the 128k features extra ram audio?
there is no bbc basic for sam coupe- the speccy rom version and tap versions wont work without hardware rom interface?

we cant just connect a pc to a speccy using serial parallel and send internet text only browser style like lynx for the pc:

http://lynx.browser.org/

no on ehas managed to use push to get 16 pixels onscreen in 13tstates using a proprtional font? that prints a line of text at a time or with the spectrum ula a whole third of the screen at a time?

A standard emulator "hardware" for console output

Almost every day, I want to copy text from zx spectrum format, yet, without peeking in the memory spending a lot of time, or typing it by hand, it is generally impossible to do.

So I'm proposing a standardized emulated console hardware to output text to it. Ofcourse this will apply to new software only, but it seems we see new games almost every day. So it's still possible. This may be a two way communication, for example, hardware may support one input box and one text box to output and two buttons so interact. Nothing fancy, it must be simple as hell.

The goal is to send text outside of the zx spectrum, so it can be used on host os. For example, I was designing a game, and game outputs a level code to screen, if an emulator has textout-interface attached to speccy, it wil popup a console window and print this text to that screen. I tested the idea on Basin, it works ok, but I'm sure it's not compatible with real hardware, I'm not a hardware guy, and I don't have the skills to design i/o scheme of it, so I'm posting the idea here.

The limitations? Other possibilites? How to communicate it from basic, or m/c? Maybe it already exists in somewhere?

Hi Patrik,

Just wondering if you plan to release an updated version of ZXDS for the 3DS? Whilst the current version works the screen display is not as good as on a standard DSi.

And no, I did not have the 3D feature turned on! :-)
