BASin Release 13 is now available

I'm still at it.

BASin is now in it's 13th incarnation (disregarding the inter-version updates) and is now available at

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/paul.dunn4/BASin_r13.exe

So without further ado, and in case you've lived in a cave for the past few years:

BASin is a 48k/128k emulator wrapped up in a nice Delphi-Style IDE (development environment) which means that you can create your BASIC programs with consummate ease.

It has various tools to help you, such as UDG editors, debugging systems, TZX/TAP creators etc.

New for this version:

128k Support! That's right, the PLAY and "Silicon Disc" from the 128k/+2 is fully supported.

The manual has undergone some updates and changes - all the code from it can be pasted into BASin now using copy/paste.

The rest is from the "What's New" file:

Release 13 Notes: (Credits for bugs found/features requested are in ()s)

Added - Updated the "paste code" routines to accept lines broken BASin-style after ":" and "THEN". This allows you to copy/paste code examples from the manual correctly.
Added - Altered the examples in the manual to look more like BASin code.
Added - 128k Snapshot saving - many thanks to BadBeard and Marko for their invaluable help with the conversion from 48k to 128k!
Added - Program compatibility in the Program Information dialog box - now tells you which model (128k or 48k) your program will run under.
Added - The BASin manual (help file) has been updated with all the new information about the 128k features.
Added - All the 128k error reports now function correctly. (Lloyd Garland provided the +2 manual that made the RAM Disk possible!)
Added - 128k RAMDisk commands - LOAD!, SAVE!, MERGE!, VERIFY!, CAT!, ERASE!. Be aware that using the 48k ZX Printer will corrupt your RAMDisk.
Added - 128k RAM page bank switching mechanisms for the RAMDisk routines.
Added - 128k commands PLAY and SPECTRUM to the editor.
Added - 128k ROM now loads with BASin, and is used to execute the PLAY command. The SPECTRUM command does nothing.
Added - Errors now take into account the 128k errors for the PLAY command.
Added - 128k Auto-sensing. If you don't use the 128k commands (PLAY/SPECTRUM/RAMDisk) then you won't lose the last two UDGs.
Added - RAMDisk commands to the editor. The ROM won't use them yet - they cause error C at the moment.

Fixed - Removed a few OCR errors from the manual, and tidied up the links a bit.
Fixed - DEF FN lines were getting their last character (usually a ")" character) removed by the tokeniser. (Zdenek Spicka)
Fixed - The RAMDisk contents would be unavailable after a NEW. Now they are, but not after a reset. (Necros)
Fixed - PRINT statements starting with a bracket had problems with numeric calculations outside the brackets due to an INPUT bug. (Zdenek Spicka)
Fixed - Found the remaining two dead links in the help file (barring the uncompleted Assembler documentation).
Fixed - Removing a selection of lines by highlighting and then deleting would not remove the lines permanently. (Crackfiend)
Fixed - LOAD ""SCREEN$ didn't display properly (the SCREEN$ wasn't properly highlighted).
Fixed - 128k Errors were corrupting the RAM Disk when they triggered - SP was being corrupted.
Fixed - Changed from the 128k ROM to the Plus 2 ROM, as the 128k's error reporting was very broken for RAM Disk errors.
Fixed - Some errors didn't display properly when notification was turned off.
Fixed - Part of the new 128k compatibility meant that REM and DEF FN behaved incorrectly.
Fixed - REM lines were being incorrectly tokenised.

Have fun,

Dunny.

Hello,

I've just started using Pocket Clive on my iPaq pocket PC, excellent emulator BTW.

1. I have just wrote a small BASIC program to randomly pick N sets of completely unique lottery numbers.
The first line is

5 RANDOMIZE

but, the fist ball picked is always 34 on the first run of the program. (if I type RUN within 2 seconds of loading the snapshot.)

I assume this is because the system variable FRAMES is always restored on loading the snapshot?
(I'm a bit rusty on how this works)
If so, is there an easy way to avoid this?

2.Ricochet (breakout type game) freezes when entering the game on my iPaq, anyone else got this to work with pocket clive?

Cheers,
Quick question though: when I run the emulator from the WoS site and play for example Thundercats - everything is above normal speed and plays slightly faster than it should - is there any way to resolve this so it plays at the normal speed?
Try playing Thundercats from WoS and you will see what I mean! lol
Or alternatively, any other suggestions on best Java emulator to use?

Hi all. I hope someone can help. This is driving me mad...

I need a bit of help with mapping Spectrum keyboard presses to the xbox controller buttons with the two emulators that I use:

Fuse x:
I can use the function in the main menu to map keys to the controller buttons OK, but when I exit the emulator and go back in later the button mappings are reset to the default. Does anyone know how I can get my preferred mappings to stay mapped?

Spextrum:
I realise there is no function in the menu to map keys to the controller. However I have followed the suggestion in the readme file to change the code in the mappings.xml file. I feel sure I have changed the mappings.xml file code accurately (on many attempts) BUT the key mappings I have set still do not work when I am running a game. Does anyone know how to do this successfully?

Any help would be most appreciated. I have posted this same request on the Xbox Scene forum and the Retro Survival forum. I have also contacted a couple of folks on the Retro Passion forum and tried to contact the authors. All to no avail (yet). I though I'd try you folks on WOS! Someone must have had this problem...
I would like to build a Spectrum emulator from scratch, the reason? well I'm curious, to see if I can =)
I've successfully ported Pocketclive to Xbox (but other emulators came first so I didn't release it)... ok I admit.. it isn't 100% ready, one day I will finish ;)

But what I would like to do is to wtite one from scratch, preferably using c#.net.. yeah I know, it's not the fastest way to do it, but I just want to learn.
What I would like is some tip on where to begin.
Any good sites, good source code to learn from?

This is sort-of an emulation question. The AY chip music for "Batman the Movie" in WoS is great to listen to on its own, except that the fourth tune - which plays during the Batwing level - is much too fast.

That is to say, no matter if I play it with Microspeccy, Deli2 or Ay Emulator, the music plays at high speed. The same is true of the ninth and best track of Rub Hubbard's "Dragon's Lair 2". The rest of the subtunes for each of these AY files play fine.

What might cause this, and how might it be fixed?

SNA/TAP/TZX/Z80/ZXS

All I knew about the Spectrum was how to play games on it, but since being introduced to pc emulations back in '97 I've always wanted to know what the difference between some of the formats were.

Now I need an explaination like I was five.
How about an explanation about snapshots, I mean what exactly happens? Is the whole file just 1000's of snaps of the game?

Also, why the need for so many simular types like listed here;

http://zxplanet.emuunlim.com/formats.htm

TZX is probably the only one that I can understand as it is the game in it's original form.

If TAP and TZX are more or less the same, then why the two formats?

Was ZXS not a good format since we don't see this about?

I know it's a big request, but whenever I read you knowledgable guys posts talking deep about programming, I always wish that I had a little clue on what your all on about.

Anyway, thanks in advance. It's just an interest.

Transferring Spectrum Games onto tape or disk

I've been told you can download Spectrum games in .TZX format and transfer them to a specci through the headphone jack. Can you only then save the game onto a disk or can you use a tape? How do this work, do you need special software to do this?

I own a Spectrum +2 and am thinking about buying a +3, just because it has a disk drive.I know that the actual number of officially released specci disk based games is low, but I thought it would be a good way of downloading new titles and it would save time loading if they were on disks rather than on tapes. Actually how long does it take to load a disk based game as opposed to one on a tape?

Also what is the storage capacity of a 3" disk? Is it something like 174k?! Is there a way of finding out how much memory a games takes up so you can determine if several games can be saved on just one disk?

Final question, are the actual blank 3" disks hard to come by? No point getting one to save games onto if you can't get the disks!

Sorry for the many quesions but I need your help!!!

Sorry for the newbie question!

I'm testing a certain article in Issue 2 of ZX Shed and am having a slight problem..

I'm using the Z80 assembler in SPIN. I've pasted the code in & compiled it. Now what? I've got no errors, but when I press execute nothing happens!

I've also compiled it to a binary file & tried opening it in the main spin window & still nothing!

I know I'm being a gimp here, but can someone help?

Apologies X post - Not sure if it should be in Hardware or Emus

A couple of nights ago I cracked and decided I had got to do something else except the seemingly endless scanning of my speccy games for a couple of weeks. So I decided to start adding some more content besides software onto my site.

Most Sinclair related hardware is already quite well documented so I don't see much point in covering that ground again, it wont add anything to our knowledgebase.

So, what hasn't (AFAIK) been done before ?.

A page illustrating spectrum emulators running on all the different hardware or OS's that is possable.

So my initial thought was something like

A page(s) showing speccy emulators running on mobile phone's. Maybe a page showing the Emu's on Nokia's, Samsungs, Motorolas etc

A page(s) showing the emus running on PDA's, similar to above.

A page(s) showing the emus running on games consoles. For the sake of argument besides the obvious consoles I would include non PC computers here. So Amiga emus etc would be here.

A page(s) showing the emus running on all the different PC OS's. So (more or less) what I am looking at here is all the versions of DOS and Windows, All the Mac OS's, and all the *nix flavours and versions.

What I would aim to do in the long term is build up a database of information where all those "how do I run X on Y" questions can be pointed to.

I can't do this on my own for obvious reasons so I would be asking for help on here to help with the information and some screengrabs or photos.

So before I start what will be a very short list if nobody is interested a couple of questions.

Do you think this would be useful resource ?
Would you be willing to help with information about your personal setup(s)?.

If the answers are yes then what information should be captured ?

I am open to any and all suggestions on this because its going to be a neverending job and I want to make sure everything that might be needed is included at the begining.

If you think I have the format wrong please say so and suggest something else. If you think its a waste of time please say so.

If there isn't any call then I won't bother and just do something else.

Does anybody know if there is a speccy emulator that I could run on my website which also has the ability for you to select games (as long as I've uploaded them). Along the lines of flash but with load options.
Thanks

I was checking out the new RAM disk feature of BASin and I came across a weird bug.

I typed in a small program and saved it to the ramdisk. Entering CAT! then displayed the program name, no problem.

Then I did NEW and CAT! again. This time, instead of listing the contents of the RAM disk, it displayed garbage and locked up. I then had to force a BREAK from the menu and when I tried CAT! again, it just printed NEXT repeatedly. I tried this a few times in case it was just an anomoly but the results were always the same.
