Hi there,

Here is a special mode of Bugaboo what helps you to press the jump key to perfect time. It is written in old-fashion magazine style for original Spectrum users.

How to enter:

1; Start the game and wait until Bugaboo waits for you on the ground.

2; Press A (Abandon) and keep pressing BREAK during border effect.

3; Now you are in BASIC.

4; Redirect 2 procedures:

POKE 27084,205
POKE 27085,118
POKE 27086,112

POKE 27447,205
POKE 27448,126
POKE 27449,112
POKE 27450,12
POKE 27451,13

POKE 27495,211

5; Load the new procedure into the memory:

LET C=0:
FOR F=28790 TO 28817
INPUT A:
POKE F,A:
LET C=C+A:
NEXT F:
PRINT C

and type these data in row (just 28 bytes):

34 37 161 33 137 112 24 7
33 00 00 78 13 200 35 34
127 112 201 47 55 120 62 62
147 120 41 1

The checksum value is 2033. If it is not, do it again.

6; Lets' go back into the game:

GO TO 1195

7; Now start the game with G (Game) and jump through the shortest way:

LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT

1,1,1,0,1,0,1,0

8; Check your time. All jump are absolutely the minimum needed length.

14 seconds ?

Sometimes the monster will catch you. Don't worry, try again.
You have only 8 jumps then Bugaboo will stop and wait.
At this point press the A key to start a new try.

Hi,

I'd like to ask if someone here can run The Artist II on real +2A. I tried several copies, 48k tape version, 128k tape version, even +3 disk version and all are crashing. Usually enough is to clear the screen and then select raster, if it doesn't crash right then, it crash after few seconds of randomly drawing.

Other software I try to run work just fine. Memory tests find nothing bad, tried lot of demos (both 48k and 128k), games, various programs and nothing crash. Computer is also pretty stable and I can use it whole day without problems.

My configuration is:

Spectrum 128 +2A (English version), divide (both, 57c and 57b), esxdos 0.8.5 and also +3e ROM v1.38 (that is actually the only thing that come to my mind that is different from firm Spectrum).

All versions of Artist II work nicely on +2A in Fuse emulator. Does have someone better experience?

Hi there,

Finally we (m/zx & Pgyuri) has been finished this game. This was a great challenge and we decided to make a special edition for the FanZiX magazine about all information and the story. The FanZiX magazine is readable only in hungarian language but this special edition has English supplement. The full is the hungarian version, the english version has many 'translated' atricle. See the welcome text:

"
Warning: English is not the writers' native language. Read own responsibility!

Welcome to my reader!

The issues of FanZiX have only been published in Hungarian. This special issue is an exception. The reason for the English edition is justified by the extraordinary nature of the subject. The subject, which at first glance does not seem to be overpowering... Backpackers Guide to the Universe Part 1 was written by Bob Hamilton. Bob Hamilton is an individuality, a man, who dreamed a mega-colossal game, not too only a game, but a trilogy. The trilogy was not finished, only the first part, indeed, the first part was ready partly only actually, the graphics were cutted, there was no sound, the game was buggy... Backpackers was the last hope of Fantasy, but the sales were not as expected, the publisher went bankrupt and the game got to be forgotten. Nowadays the rating of the game is rather weak (WOS: 6,43/10, position is only the 4th between the five Fantasy games), there is no walkthrough, no error correction, no pokes, no interest. But why this game was so unsuccessful? The players' expectations were too high seeing the Crash preview, where the game shown better face. Or the game was unplayable due to a bug, which has not been corrected since then. Or it was just too complicated and couldn’t motivate the players... Who knows. If you read the next few pages, maybe you will see the game differently, maybe you will reevaluate your expectations, maybe you will understand the relationships and the logics of the game, maybe you will appreciate it better.
After some archive browsing for the appropriate candidate I decided to check Spanish game Goody:

http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekid.cgi?id=0002099

Something suspicious was here. A monochrome Spanish game (while most Spanish games are very colourful),no scrolling, flip screen which really doesn't need to be monochrome.

My intuition worked. Just load the game and try POKE 30609,4 (or your favourite colour :) )

Wow, sprites have their own colour routine! Some ugly colour clash however too :)

Graphics have also attribute painting code (disabled in the final game), however the attribute table seems to be absent in the program.

I made a little bit of hacking (about 5 instructions changed) and placed some temp attribute table filled with repeated pattern 1,2,3 (blue, red pink)
The result can be seen on the screenshot. I'm also attaching the snapshot:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/nsqrl4

Now I could continue with poking the proper attributes. But I have a question. Is anybody interested? :) I'm not familiar with Goody but it has quite a high score and 41 voters so I suppose that it is quite popular in some circles.

So what do you think, people? :)

This is probably covered elsewhere, but let's start a new discussion for this.
I'd like to start with this...

Without doubt my all time favourite cover. The brilliant 80s hand-painted artwork looks great, real effort has been put into it. The picture itself evokes space action perfectly. An astronaut fires from his mounted cannon at a space station, releasing another astronaut out into space. An alien is clinging to the ship, clasping on to the edge of the cannon. Explosions etc. I can't think of a more exciting image for a boy in the mid 80s.

In fact, the cover itself is why Cosmic Cruiser remains one of my favourite games. It is, in fact, crap! But... the cover fires up your imagination enough for you to want to play it regardless. That is what artwork should do, in my opinion.

A modern computer generated pale faced, black coat wearing goth holding a gun and looking moody does nothing for me at all. Where's the imagination?

Well, here's what I found out while trying to finish the game.

General comments

- Like many other games by spanish companies, even if you know all the nuts and bolts of the game, you can't expect to succeed more than once out of many attempts.

- You cant get quite a lot of extra lives, too bad you start again from the beginning of the level when you are killed.

- In levels 2,3 and 4 you have to land on a pad at the end of the level. I you miss it, you die. It shows up when you have about 600 units of fuel.

Level one:

- You'll be fine as long as there's always a missile of each type ahead of you. It's better to take leaps when the gap is closer to left part of the screen (so you see any incoming jeeps). When there're gaps close to one another make sure your horizontal missiles are a bit higher above the ground (so they destroy jeeps that are mid-air).

- The jump is a bit broken. Nonetheless, you can perform some tricks in case of emergency, like jumping over jeeps or on your vertical when you are very close to gaps, the jump over it inmediately after touching ground again.

Level two:

- This is probably the easiest level of the game.

- You can choose between destroying ground enemies or dodging their bullets, as they rarely shoot more than a couple of projectiles.

- Stay of the top right corner, but make sure you leave a safety margin to evade or destroy planes coming from your back.

- On levels 2,3 and 4 you can almost touch the ground without crashing.

Level three

- Ground enemies (this time submarines) are much more agressive and demand most of your attention. Shoot to the ground (making your helicopter dive a litte bit) so that whenever a submarines comes in a timely missile destroys it.

- It's better to dodge planes (with the possible exception of those coming from your rear) in order to keep shooting any incoming submarines. Besides, the more planes already on screen, the less likely a submarine pops up. Go to the lower part of the screen if you have to (then move up again), but don't forget to keep shooting to the ground on your way back to the top of the screen.

- Dodging submarine projectiles works some times, but it's risky (some times the game throws at you three of them in a row), it should be the last resort.

Level four

- Submarines are replaced by turrets that, to make matters worse, are a bit above the ground and shoot more often than submarines.

- Stay on the top right corner, but a little lower and a bit closer to the center of the screen.

- Better forget about shooting down planes, move on your vertical to dodge them.

- Shoot to the ground to destroy incoming turrents at regular intervals. When you are on the lower part of the screen, shoot parallel to the ground.

- Dodging turret projetiles gets even more problematic, as they are higher and the strip of the screen you have to move is narrower and as I said before, they shoot quite a lot.

I was determined to do a Speccy game for my Halloween video, and are quite a few appropriate games to choose from.

My first thought was Cauldron. I really enjoyed the flying sections, but thought the dungeon sections brutally difficult. As I say in the video, I'm not sure why I then thought Ghouls and Ghosts would be a better idea, as I found it insanely hard. As I also say in the vid, everyone knows that this is a hard game! I still loved it though, and maybe it's because I knew that while difficult, it was still fair...I'm just very bad at the game! I could have done without the fireball 'power-ups', mind:-)

And here's a question - are there any more power-ups in Spectrum games that are more like 'power-downs'!?

As always, feedback is much appreciated!
