Only a small conceit in the general scheme of things, but since Issue 1 of Crash was the first Spectrum mag I bought, and I remember wondering at the sheer variety of games therein, I thought I'd go back and play them (or at least the ones with full reviews.) With a quick review and my score (strictly one play only and using the keyboard for added authenticity)

First off, Deathchase 3D (Crash score 92%) - a gentle start, as this is solidly in my top 10 anyway. Got to Day 5 before losing a life, but it all went wrong and Day 6 saw me dead with a score of 34,600. It may have been the first Crash Smash (if only in retrospect) but it was still underrated - it deserved 95% at the very least.

Odyssey 1 (Crash 72%) - never played this before, but impressive for 16k, with a fairly easy Beserk screen followed by a stupid fast Arcadia screen - no way I could dodge a single bullet. Shame everything has to be character sized to fit the space. Score 140.

Warlock of Firetop Mountain (73%) - OK there's an entire screen of keyboard commands, this bodes well... I wandered around for a while and then a green spider appeared and killed me while I was trying to remember how to unsheath my sword. Score 0.

And so it came to pass that I'd decided to master fiddly isometric-'em-up Rasputin. And I was doing pretty well too... got the control scheme figured out, learned how to kill those annoying frog-like creatures by letting them jump against my raised shield before prodding them with the sword, and made myself a splendid little map of the netherworlds too. In fact I'd be all set to complete the damn game quite easily...

...but there's one room I can't get through. This is in the 128k version mind. It's thru the gate marked with the two 'T's on the main strip, then one screen to the left. A yellow screen, with one moving platform and a couple of chomping teeth baddies. A really simple screen, in fact. Except that there's also one of those crossbow fixtures placed right above the exit block, preventing escape to the North where lie the last few screens I have yet to see.

Does anyone know how to prevail against this most unreasonable predicament? It's really piloting me gonads at this point. I presumed it would be some isometric depth-perseption optical illusion jiggery-trickery, but I've tried every jump to no avail. Is it possible to destroy the crossbow somehow? Answers on a postcard please...

Something that I could not quite figure out. If you look at The Tipshop (or other places where pokes can be found) they list pokes for the 48K and 128K version.

http://www.the-tipshop.co.uk/cgi-bin/info.pl?wosid=0005160 , scroll down a bit to see the '128K' pokes...

However, the 128K pokes are not all identical for the '128K Megamix' release, they *appear* at a guess to be for a 128K 'original' game ? Unless its just a case of some duplicates ending up there in the '48K' page.

The confusion here is I'm unaware of said version having never found a tape file or otherwise. Can anyone expand on this please ? :)

I will patiently try to play each game for at least one week before giving up, and, of course, anybody can join me.

Yes, it may recall something else.
I'm going to avoid the use of solutions unless I'm seriously stuck. The problem is that after five minutes during which nothing new happens I usually feel heavily stuck. But the tiptop shop tips are there to help, I suppose.

Apparently The Great Giana Sisters never saw release for the ZX Spectrum, due to legal pressure from Nintendo. Yet, apparently some time ago a working copy did seem to surface:

There is always the possibility this is a fake of course, BUT I did find an interesting letter in SU november 1988 - where a certain Gavin Sharpin writes about the game - kind of proving that at least a few copies did find their way into the shops, just as happened with the C64 and Amiga versions:

Any hopes of finding a complete copy somewhere - so it can be dumped and preserved?

Hopefully everyone here is familiar with the quite marvellous theme tune from the 48K version of Fairlight - borrowed from Wizardry on the Bread Bin (as opposed to all the American-programmed Wizardry games for the PCs of the day). Hopefully everyone here is equally familiar with the rather less than marvellous theme tune from 128K Fairlight, which I suppose was the "proper" tune as the Bread Bin's Fairlight used it as well.

At the risk of sounding like Jeremy Clarkson (and unleashing the torrent of chaos that usually follow these words), how hard can it be to program an AY version of the 48K Fairlight (or C64 Wizardry) tune and bolt it into the space where the nasty "proper" tune is on the 128K version?

I ask because I have only just found out (within the last hour) that Fairlight was converted for the Atari 8-bits last year by some Poles, and their version has included both theme tunes (with an extension on the better tune as well). Unfortunately, the terrible tune plays throughout the game, but I'm sure that could be rectified somehow...

Evidence:

The Bread Bin's Wizardry has this tune playing in the background for some of its rooms at least, which is how I'd imagined Fairlight should have been:

Also, if anyone's wondering why I like the original 48K tune so much, load up your favourite Doom II source port (GZDoom, I'd say) and run nuts2.wad... if your computer can hack it. Anyone who can get 100% kills has either cheated, or is not human.

Well, I wasn't going to say anything until it was finished, but a remake of SQIJ was suggested (for fun) today over at the Next forums, so I had to mention that I was working on a remake for the Spectrum, based on the C64 version, so I might as well mention it here as well.

Currently I'm working on a Doctor Who game for PC & Mac and after that my priority is finishing the 128K version of Vallation.
But lately I've also been spending some of my spare dev-time time remaking SQIJ as a small "quickie" for the regular 48K machine. :)

I just put the control panel at the bottom in this morning and next I'll work on updating the informations in it.

The whole map is there, the shields barriers are there and so is all the items - and they can be picked up.
The end screen will also show the bits of the tree that has been collected.

Basically all that's needed is adding the enemies, a menu, music and some polish ... and time to do it. ;))

...on that note;
If someone wants to give a hand with the sprites and those tiles that aren't blue I'd be more than happy getting some help? ;)

Renegade IV - Restoration Of Justice (Imagine)
Plenty of debate has raged on the subject of which is the best Renegade game, the original, or Target Renegade? There are pros and cons that can be applied to the first two games of this franchise. Whichever of the two sides you back, it's clear that both are highly commendable. Renegade fans aren't going to write off Target Renegade as a stinker, and vice versa.
What everyone can be solidly behind, is that Renegade III is an absolute dog's egg of a game. An utter bastardisation of the franchise. You know how the odd release from a budget label would try to be a knock-off of a prolific full price game? Like the countless attempts at re-doing Arkanoid, for example? I wouldn't even forgive Renegade III for being a budget label's knock-off, it's far lower quality than that.
And so this brings us to Renegade 4, which is surprisingly good. I'm saying this despite it using the Renegade III game engine.
The reason for it being so good, is that you get to give a good kicking to everybody involved in making Renegade III. Everybody from the first two games all join in to help you, the snooker-cue wielding skinheads, the violent prostitutes and subway thugs. They're all there giving the Renegade III coders a right pasting.

Out Run - The Text Adventure (US Gold)
Continuing a practice of issuing an arcade and an adventure game based on a big license, industry folk were bemused that Geoff Brown decided to apply the trend to Out Run.
There's little that can be said for Out Run - The Text Adventure. Much of it consists of entering GO FORWARD for around 15 minutes. Little variation in gameplay, to be honest. A title that lets down fans of the arcade original and anyone with a staunch interest in adventure games.
A little saving grace for adventure fans will be the rich descriptions when you EXAMINE GLOVEBOX. A nice little subgame here, much of which involves your blonde girlfriend arguing with you as the lights turn to green. Playing the game this way will never result in victory, but it's more interesting than playing the heavily linear path to completion.

Brexit Monty (Gremlin Graphics)
An incredibly difficult platformer that sees our subterranean hero trying to travel across Europe, although the huge amount of red tape and financial burdens have him alone and isolated at Dover. There's simply no joy in this recent installment of the Monty Mole franchise, definitely a massive step backwards.

Ryanair Traffic Controller 2017 (Hewson)
Previous iterations had this series recognised as a commendable simulation. What wrong this year? There's hardly any action, you're left looking at an empty sky for 99% of the time.

My dear old Mum recently spotted a copy of Combat School in a local charity shop and knowing her son still loves his Spectrum picked it up for me which was very nice of her! When I was about to load it up I spotted that although the box is labelled as Ocean the cassette has Imagine printed on it which I thought rather odd. I know Imagine was an Ocean owned label after the original company bit the dust and I have many Ocean and Imagine games but I've never had one that had one name on the box and one on the label. Can anyone shed any light on this?
Also the only way I can start the game is by selecting two player and then all is well, if I select one player the player runs on the spot without moving and the top screen remains stationary! It does this on both my +2's my Rubber key original and my Spectrum 48+. Again any ideas?? Believe it or not I have never played Combat School in over 30 years of Spectrum ownership so I'm not sure what to expect from this game but I do like it even though it is rock hard!

If there's approximately 10,000 games in the WOS archive, and each game is let's say 48k in size, that's the entire history of Spectrum gaming in half a gigabyte, the storage equivalent of pocket change.

I wonder if in 30 years time, we can look forwards to having the entire back-catalogue of today's PS4/XB1 games stashed away on our cellphones without giving it a second thought? :>
