My confession of guilt in the piracy thread that I'd never legitimately bought an Ultimate game, despite playing Knight Lore to death BITTD, led me to start thinking about what value I'd got from games I bought compared to ones I'd copied from mates. So off the top of my head, here are the games I remember playing the absolute most:

Bought
Daley Thomson's Decathlon
Match Day
Match Day II
R-Type
Myth: History In The Making
Exolon
Zynaps
I, Ball 2: Quest for the Past
Highway Encounter
Thrust

Pirated
Knight Lore
Elite
Jet Pac
Lunar Jetman
Sabre Wulf
Deathchase 3D
The Hobbit
Hyper Sports
T.L.L.
Skool Daze
Commando
Match Point
Football Manager
The Way of the Exploding Fist
Chuckie Egg

Obviously I played (and bought) way more games, but those are the ones I spent most time on (although I've probably forgotten some). So overall, I probably spent more time on copied games, but did buy a lot also. Especially in the late 80s, when I could afford to buy more, but conversely didn't have as much time to spend playing (and perhaps less dedication than when I was younger).

So, a new year and a new game completion challenge..! After the success (eh? Ed) of the first game completion challenge, I thought I'd run it again.

So here are the first 5 choices that the 'random game' button has generated. I used a WoS score filter so that there isn't too much chaff...

Snodgits (Creative Sparks)

Fairlight II: A Trail of Darkness (The Edge)

Knight Tyme (Mastertronic)

Canyon Warrior (Mastertronic)

I, Ball 2

(Firebird)

So, just to recap, we vote for a game, and then anyone who wants to get involved attempts to complete the game through a mixture of tenacity and mutual WoSser support..! Or if you're a complete git, don't play the game at all and just vote for the toughest one so that muggins here ends up hurling his keyboard through the screen.

As it turns out, I've either (a) not played these or (b) not got anywhere close to completing them, so looking at the titles it might be an interesting challenge.

Will leave it to the end of this week and see what the results look like... :)

Hi everyone and welcome to the August 2017 edition of Which Is Best?
Last month I placed two classic ZX Spectrum games head to head, Atic Atac and Jet Pac and I can announce Atic Atac won this edition winning 24 of the votes compared to 22 votes for Jet Pac, good god this was a close one, came right down to the last 3 votes, up until that moment I had no idea which would win, I was grinning whilst counting them knowing this was going to be extremely tight.
It was interesting to see where your loyalties lied when it came to choosing one of these games over the other and this month it doesn't get easier for you ;-)

This month I place 2 but very different famous iconic games ever that sent arcade gaming into the skies and gave birth to so many future video games.
One game caused a shortage of coins in Japan and cost many people their jobs because of the addiction, the other game also appealed to females as it was a game that unlike many games where you chase and kill, this game had you running away 95% of the time, they are Space Invaders and Pac-Man.
Which for you is the game that slingshotted video games into the popular domain in the early days and considered the Grand Daddy of retro arcade gaming?!,...only you can decide that, happy voting!
Whenever my children bring me some lovely present from kindergarten such as a flu or a pox, I feel incredibly drawn to a few specific Spectrum titles (among the many retrogaming systems I like). What I'm wondering is, has anyone ever calculated God's Number for the 15 Puzzle on which Jumbly is based? Also, what would God's Number be for the 5x4 version (which is what Jumbly basically is), and how does adding the wrap option (which potentially introduces parity problems) affect it?

Hi,

sorry for posting stupid thing, but no matter what I do I always run out of fuel when playing this thing on skill lvl 5. I've tried flying at high altitude, I copied the terrain, tried to avoid flaks, regularly dropped bombs on tanks and cannons to become lighter, flew on the lowest speed, nothing helps, I can't even reach the town. What am I still missing here? Should I refuel somewhere?

Thanks.

New game out now: Final Fantasy ZX

Ever since I played the games on the SNES, I thought that it should be possible to make a strapped-down version for the Speccy. Just minus any super fancy effects and smooth scrolling. I also played the NES versions at some time and they looked fairly primitive, so I thought it was easier to convert one of them.

So here it is, my secret project that I've been slaving away at for the last couple of weeks: a port of the very first Final Fantasy which was originally released on the NES. The story was a joke to begin with but this helped to make it easier to convert, as there wasn't a lot of epic cinegraphic work involved. Would have been much harder to try to convert one of the later episodes from the SNES ...

The graphics look a bit crap at parts. Well, at first I wanted to redraw them myself but there were so many different sprites that at some point I just thought "ah, sod it" and converted the existing ones, getting rid of the colour in the process - but not totally. I mean, I didn't want completely monochrome sprites and since there isn't a lot of animation, I opted for this solution where the sprites move mostly in 8-pixel steps to avoid attribute issues.

Since the game is still fairly big, I had to make it 128k only. Sorry

On the bright side you can at least name your characters in true Skool Daze style. Please let me know what you think of it, but refrain from posting spoilers, as the game is fairly short and you don't wanna spoil it for other forum members.

Hi everyone - this is my first post, I hope it's in the right place. I was away from the Spectrum scene for many years but 2017 is my comeback year, and I finally completed a commercial game which was released last week (Terrapins). I just want to thank everyone in the community for their overwhelmingly positive response to this release and I'm happy to count myself as one of you. It's great to be back.

If you'd like to try Terrapins for free and find out more about other speccy stuff I'm doing, you can go to:
