Hello Spec-chums, I've been a long time Commodore user, but also a long-time Speccy admirer (and emulator user). I've recently got hold of a Issue 2 Speccy. I discovered that it was a 16K model, but reading the thread here I managed to get hold of the chips required to upgrade it to 48K.

Unfortunately, on turning it on, the machine froze on start-up RAM-test, showing a white border and black screen. Removing any one of the 4164 RAM chips allows it to start with the opening copyright message, but carrying out PRINT PEEK 23732 + PEEK 23733 * 256 reveals that the system still only has 16K.

I've tried juggling the RAM chips about a bit. Now it starts up fine, but still only 16K is recognised.

I'm guessing one of the RAM chips is buggered. Is there any way I can find out which one? Or if not the RAM chip, where else could I look?

I have a 48K issue 4A board (yellow it is) that was a 48K machine from new, but only reports 16K working with the Sinclair ZX Test ROM in an Int2.

Have done the whole poke test and it comes back with a certain chip, that chip has been replaced with a socket and numerous 4164 chips have been cycled through it - it still says that chip is duff. Unperturbed I de soldered all the 4164 chips and fitted sockets and installed all new RAM. Same problem!

So I put my logic analyser on the 4 TTL (the LS00, the LS32 and the two LS 257s) chips that are part of the RAM upgrade, they all check out, just to be sure I de soldered them all and put them through the TTL chip tester that's part of my eprom blower. All check out!

So thats the whole of the RAM upgrade chippery tested!

Also swapped in a known good ULA chip just coz its an easy test - same problem - only 16K

The PCB is immaculate, no signs of any physical damage.

Am left wondering if the Z80 has a dodgy address line and it cant see beyond it.

What dya think? Holy water time yet?

Here's a pic of my Spectrum +3 having a little dialogue in Spanish (yeah, it might be a bit dodgy but I've only been learning the language for 6 months!)

I've added this subset of UTF-8 (it should be enough to support most western European languages) since starting to learn Spanish I found out that the Speccy has quite a following in Spain. Adding Russian character support would be the obvious next step.

The characters being only 8 pixels high (really, 7 usable as you need to leave a blank line so everything doesn't merge together) does mean the upper case accented characters might look a bit odd, but overall it seems usable.

Does it have tape inputs at all?
Also the distress one is lacking its PSU, it looks like the PSU is just a transformer with a couple of taps giving 9VAC and 15.4VAC, are both needed to run the machine, or is perhaps the higher voltage only for RS232?

In my messing around with hardware, I have managed to nacker a Speccy 48 board. Specifically, i have managed to mess up the power inverter section.

Now, the board appears to be marked (C) 1983 Issue 4S, (Yes, "S")
In the documentation section, there is a Issue 4A, but not a 4S, the layout, and specifically the transistor thats gone to Silicon heaven, doesnt appear to match any of the board layouts in there.

Unfortunately, it appears to be a variant of the power section having an extra Axial capacitor (Labelled C79), a very large TR4 (Labelled C2235A), and TR5 turned 90 degrees.

Does anyone have any information about this board? Specifically what transistor TR5 actually is? Sadly after its little accident, its illegable.
It has two knobs on top, one a volume control and one a selector switch which can select Off, Load, Amp or Save. It appears to take power from the Speccy power supply as there is a 9v input socket and a corresponding output lead. The only other outputs are two sets of Speccy cassette leads.
There is a Sound Box on infoseek (the ZON), but this appears to be made for ZX81 and uses the edge connector.

Hi, I'm not sure where the best place to post this is, but here goes.

I'm having trouble getting some of my spectrum tapes into tzx format. I'm following the guide that is on this site (using cooledit2000 and maketzx).

Maketzx doesn't seem to be seeing anything on the voc files. When I record the tape through cool edit it sounds ok if I listen to the recording in my speakers, but as soon as I play the sample back, it sounds very quiet and echoy.

I've got the ear of my tape deck going into the mic of my sound card. I've tried messing with all the settings on the tape deck, and trying line in but the sample still sounds crud when played back, I am thinking the quality of the sample is whats causing the problem. Any ideas?

TIA,

Was working on a large television studio sound mixing console last night and noted that one of pots was broken.

Opened up channel and found it was a potentiometer with an extended shaft (oh er) as in there was a collar that went on the end of pot and you added an extension shaft add to collar. The collar was broken.

Anyone know where I can get these collars from shaft is approx 2.5mm diameter and collar attaches to shaft by tightening allen keys.

Tried e-mailing sound desk manufacturer but no reply yet.

I am interested in reading about something which I don't know what is called (duh).

I am looking for (online/offline) reading material which explains how the loading/scrolling bars on the side of the TV work. That is, either something barebones or even more technical.

A seemingly simple question, but I still don't know where to start because I don't know the technical words for whatever it is I am looking for.

I just think it's cool that you can have squeaky sounds represent zeroes and ones and then displayed on-screen ... want to know more!

Well,I am bit off topic but I cannot understand why the QL had no arcade games made for it and if it had, would they be vastly technically superior than the ones of Speccy,Amstrad and SAM?

When I mean techically,I speak of graphics, sound(although I think the Intel 8049 is shitty),speed etc
Thanx in advance

I've been wondering why my issue 2 board has been kicking out this signal when powered up...

Having a browse through the forums, I've got the feeling this is symptomatic of a CPU fault.
I've had the lid off the machine this evening and noticed that the 'CPU Patch' that should be present is not complete...

Any ideas how to fabricate the patch, or is there an alternative arrangement?

Would it be possible to interface in a seperate C64 style SID sound device to the ZX Spectrum to make existing ZX Spectrum games sound like their C64 counterparts Could you get the device to poll the existing sound effects on each game program from the ZX Spectrum object code and convert it to match that of the C64 sound effects object code equivelant which would output the C64 sound effects directly from the device This is just a hypothetical question I realise there would be little demand for such a device but it would at last be nice to equalise the ZX Spectrum up with the C64 on sound on C64 to ZX Spectrum conversions

Hello.

I know about the DivIDE project, and about the ZX Ethernet project, but not how far they've come or what they can do. So:

1. If I have a squillion TZX files sitting on an IDE HDD can I connect it to a Speccy with a DivIDE and load them as if they're from tape? Or at least, load them? Or can it only run TAP files? Additional: what is the maximum capacity CF card the the CF-IDE can support?

2. If said squillion TZX files are sitting on my NAS, can I connect a cat-5 to my Speccy and stream them off via my LAN, and load them as if they're from tape? Or at least, load them? BTW I'm guessing there's no wireless solution in development, is that right?

3. And how much would the second solution (assuming it is a solution) cost me?

Cheers all
