Hello All,

Sob.. I am a plonker, I did the cardinal sin, I was testing a bunch of joystick interfaces that I got off ebay and one didn't have the keyway and now I don't have a working Spectrum 48K+ (6A)!

I get a black screen, border and inner, but I checked the ULA and it's fine.

The voltages on the lower RAM are not correct, it appears I have lost -5v and +12v. Does this mean the lower DRAM is now toast?

My coil has some modification (done prior to me owning the board) to it so I'm not sure how to test it. Basically under the board there's a resistor linking the two outer pins of the coil. A second modification goes to R61 from the bottom inner pin of the coil. Does anyone know what this is?

Using a MM and testing TR 4 I'm getting 6 and 1193 on the legs (+ in middle) and 0 and 693 (- in middle).

For TR5 I'm getting 778 and 776 on the outer legs (- middle) and 1515 and open circuit (+ middle).

So I assume TR4 is toast but TR5 is okay?

Is there anything else I should check?

I should be put in stocks for a week and everyone throw rotten fruit and veg at me! I can't believe I did this!

Hi WOS. Its my first post here. I have know about this site for a quite good time, but didnt had the will to contact you.
I dont know much about computers, nor im a technician. But i think the rf output has a problem. I also heard a high pitched and grainy sound when the spectrum is turned on

I would like to see this machine alive. But i cant do much

One more question about fixing the distorted +3 sound. The longer you search the internet, the more suggestions you find. They?re all different, but, beside from installing a stereo mod, they all require some resistors to be removed, added and tracks to be cut. This description
http://home.amis.net/mambroz/misc/plus3soundfix.htm
looks relatively simple. However, it?s not clear to me, if this would also work on a +3 Issue One. According to the author, it worked well on his later issues.
What do you think?

Using an EPROM in a 48K Spectrum

There are plenty of guides as to how to do this floating around, however I didn't like the fact that you can't then plug in the standard 27128 ROM chip after the board is modified.

So I decided to approach this from a different angle :)

I started with the guide found here, which seems to be the pretty standard way of doing things.

Next I desoldered the ROM links, and installed pin headers in the four link positions, and one more at the ground point shown in the above guide:

Next I built this little contraption :)

Flipping the board over, to take care of the link between pin 1 and pin 28, I soldered in a couple of more pin headers, this time with the plastic surround still on so as not to short against adjacent traces:

(Shown with the wire link installed, this can be easily removed)

Here's a shot with the diode/resistor circuit installed, so if I want to plop in a standard ROM for whatever reason I can just pull the wire link from the underside and install standard ROM links instead of the circuit, no soldering needed :)

And a final shot for proof :)

Only drawback is that you can only use the bottom 16K of the EPROM, but you could always wire in a switch as shown in the guide, and if you're going down that route you might as well do it the classic way :)

Hope someone finds this useful.

IDEA: ZX Spectrum dock.

The ZX Spectrum dock

Inspired by my foray into RGB/SCART cables and my XPS 12 dock:

I’ve started on a new project, to produce a primitive docking station for the ZX Spectrum. The idea is that all the inputs/outputs of a Spectrum are plugged into the dock, the dock then enhances each input. The dock would work for all Sinclair machines (the Amstrads have differing PSU connectors and RGB settings making them a faff).

I thought I’d pass the idea along so I can perhaps include other ideas, or get wind of issues that the project might have before I started building it! Other than the power and SCART parts I've not even began to design this properly!

The dock would be powered by the normal Spectrum power supply, from the dock would be a traditional 9v barrel lead that would plug into the Spectrum. This means (especially as I'm not using the edge connector) we can do a few things:

We can have a proper on off switch

We can have an LED to show if the Spectrum has power or not.

We draw power for the dock prior to power entering the Spectrum so we don’t draw too much away.

We can provide the Spectrum a better 9v supply thus reducing the work of the 7805, so heat inside the Spectrum should reduce and components lives extended.

The dock would have an RF input socket for RF and would provide an RGB cable + connector for the toastracks. The dock would have ear & mic sockets inputs.

On the output side, it would provide SCART, RF and Component + Audio L & R.

For 16/48 we can mix the audio from the ear with the RF (like the Currah Microspeech) so we have sound through the TV.

Now we have a good power source we can provide all the power requirements of the SCART cable (e.g. pin 8 and 16) that current ZX Spectrum SCART cables do not provide.

(We might be able to demodulate the RF and for the component / SCART for the 16/48s (not researched this bit)).

We might be able to amplify the sound coming into the dock so that MP3 players and Mobile phones/tablets can be used to play TZX/WAV files and the ZX Spectrum load them as though they were on tape.

The dock can be configured (SCART settings / perhaps desired outputs) via switches.

Edit:

Could I get HDMI out?
Anything I do with the keypad and RS232 on the toastrack?

Folks,

I recently had a chance to fix a couple of Issue 1 boards, and learned the hard way that the chips in the 16K RAM bank have a different placement when compared with all other issues.

All issues from 2 up have the ram chips lined up the most logical way i.e. from D7 to D0 from left to right (IC13...IC6)

with Issue 1, chips arrangement is D7-D6-D5-D4-D3-D0-D2-D1 from left to right (IC13-IC12-IC11-IC10-IC9-IC6-IC8-IC7).

This would have never crossed my mind, but when I was desperate chasing the apparently meaningless reports from the Fruitcake RAM tester, I finally checked all the connections and made the bitter discovery. Lots of lost hours for naught. Sigh.

The Issue 1 board layout is not documented anywhere, to the best of my knowledge. A quick search in the message board archives does not reveal anything on this subject, too.

It therefore feels appropriate to have it documented here, in hope that this saves a lot of frustration to someone else.

Unfortunately, when the machine is plugged in, the Sinclair Logo appears fine at the bottom, but the screen is peppered with pixels and it freezes up?
Any ideas what the issue could be, and if so, any kind of solution?

Fresh bleeding update for ZX Evolution Baseconf -- raster and ULA contended memory emulation for original 48k and 128k models.

Here is some presentation (in russian, probably useless), which demonstrates how some 48k or 128k prods are working:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOayIyZPAvk

Download fresh files from SVN here (this is not an official NedoPC release yet!)
zxevo_fw.bin
zxevo.rom

Some info:

1. Contened memory is emulated as described here at WoS. However, this is still an emulation, i.e. no actual video fetches are done exactly as on orignal Speccies.

2. Rasters are correct (224/312/69888 and 228/311/70908), yet the CPU frequency is always 3.500 MHz, since 3.54 MHz is unavailable at the board.

3. There is no port FF currently. I'm not sure whether there is exact description of what should be read from there at every cycle. If there is any, please give me a link.

4. Port decoding is still 'redundant' (means port #FE is decoded with full low part of address, not only A0), as it was in Baseconf from the beginning. Yet some hacks added for port #7FFC to work correctly.

5. Yet no +3 timing emulation, though some provisions are made. If you have some multicolor/border prods (games or demos) for +3 mode, please give me links. Currently I'm in doubt whether +3 emulation is really needed at all.

Some usage instructions (provided you have basic knowledge of ZX Evolution and ERS):

1. Scroll Lock key now selects both 15kHz or 31kHz raster and cycles through pentagon->60Hz->48k->128k raster modes. Single stroke changes 15 to 31 or vice versa, double stroke cycles through different rasters.

2. Contended memory works only if you have 48k or 128k raster (shown in upper right corner just below time and date) AND 3.5MHz CPU frequency.

3. If you want running TAP's with original 48k or 128k ROM set, first disable tape autostart in "Setup", then select your TAP, then go to "Service" and select either 48k or 128k ROM. Then proceed as always -- LOAD "".

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could help me with a little mystery?

After I tripped over my first 48k +, and knocked out the joystick expansion, I bought an almost identical 48k + from a second hand shop to replace it.

This was around 1994. I never opened the replacement speccy up but, on the left hand side of the QL-style keyboard, there was a silver phono port and a 'stick' type silver toggle switch.

I was never able to figure out what it was. In recent years I've started to wonder if it was an RCA video port (especially since it was so close to the internal RF modulator), or possibly audio.

I haven't owned that Spectrum for over a decade now (2004) so I can't test out my theory - does anyone here know what the port was for?

Hello all,

I am still beavering away trying to work out why my Issue 2 fails and after a much closer visual inspection I noticed what looks like some damage (see below) and in the Spectrum Repair guide it says:

You may also visually check , to see that R79 2k2 (Issue 6) or R62 15R (Issue 6) or R55 56R (Issue 4 and less) are not discoloured. If any of the 55R resistors are badly discoloured, change D15 BA137 on all models.

May I have some assistance pretty please :)

Does the R62 look as though it has failed?

Is the D16 destroyed too, it has no yellow band like it's brothers and sisters.

Do we know what would cause this to occur?

Besides the D15 BA 137 is their likely to be any other component to have suffered damage?

Where would I get the failed bits from?

D16 to me seems part of the circuit that shifts the current from 9v to 12v, however when I performed resistance tests all appears okay, I am a bit loathed to switch it on, is there a quick test can do to confirm the failures?

Bought another faulty spectrum from Ebay.

This one, when you turn it on, it looks like it's going to boot OK, but when it gets to the point where it should display the copywrite notice, I get a black K in the middle of the screen and a low constant beep from the speaker.

I found I had a faulty Lower RAM IC (IC 6) and replaced that, but didn't fix the problem.

I then tried connecting +5v to pin 5 of IC23 to boot it as 16K and that works.
I entered the command 'PRINT PEEK 23732 + PEEK 23733 * 256' and I get back 65535 which you would expect for a 48K spectrum.
I then tried to load the memory test program from Zorns website but I get an R-Tapeload error at the end of the first part of the program loading.
if you list the program most of it is garbage.
I'm guesing I still have a memory fault somewhere? Anyone got any ideas?

Advice is sought from the learned on WoS.

I just bought an Interface 1Bis from sunny South Africa. It arrived fast, but unfortunately doesn't work. Let me explain...

The device won't enter a usable state without horrendous crashes of the Spectrum (a 128k, but also tried on a gray +2). After my first cleaning of the edge connector, no improvements. After 5 odd days of cleaning, re-seating, trying to update the boot code and general technical mucking about, I can at last get the Kempston Joystick Interface working.

But that's it. Trying the interface itself crashes the spectrum with lines of graphic junk on screen. I've emailed Dan, and I've been told that the errors are consistent with a bad connection. Clean the connections, so I did again. Prior to my 2nd 'de-oxidation' cleaning (yesterday) entering the 1Bis into a running state crashed and froze the Spectrum. Now it just crashes it, but I can reset the Spectrum without pulling the wall plug. I tried my +2 as well, with the same results.

But here's the rub. I've checked out http://www.if1bis.com/, where there's walkthroughs on processes to test stability. This includes what for me is a fatal error - walking about with a live interface 'wobbling' at the back of your spectrum to test stability. Spectrum's are not 'laptops' and I seem to remember from my 30 year old Spectrum Manual that it says not to move it about when on. Anyway, there's also an in depth many pictured post (by 'Rune'. Is it the same Rune posting here?), which is very good for sure and goes in depth about 're-tinning' an edge connector. But sadly in a small post at the end of the in depth explanation, Rune reports the Spectrum died a horrible death shortly thereafter.

I'm not sure what to do next. It doesn't work, except the Kempston Joystick interface. To go further I'm going to have to flatten entirely the edge connections, which I've already done as far as I dare. The connector is now nice and shiny. But a re-tinning operation for my 128k is for me a step too far. So I'm stuck.

Your thoughts welcomed. A workable fix especially

Just to announce that I've done a fairly big update/re-organisation of my website, and specifically the schematics page.

I'm finally getting around to adding all the information I've gathered about the differences between different board revisions, the modifications made at the factory to certain boards, and various other bits and bobs that have been sitting in a text file waiting for me to write up for far too long.

I've also, with a lot of help from Glenn, put up a new schematic for the +2B ISSUE2 and got lots of "interesting" detail which I will be writing up soon along with the details of factory mods on the +2B boards.

Still no ISSUE 4 schematic I'm afraid, and as always if you find any errors in the schematic or the text, let me know :)

TL;DR: The +2B schematics have been updated ;)

Hi,

is there a possibility that someone will produce a real good substitue for defective membranes of Spectrum+ or 128k heatasink.
I bought several membranes (more then 10 until now) from different distributors (in Germany, in England) - the last ones at the 30th aniversary meeting in Cambridge. I never got one good membrane until now. The layers are not congruent glued. The material has too much firmness - resultung in insensible keys at the borders (as the cursor keys, Break, Delete).
Therefore for me the damage of an original membrane means the death of this keyboard. So nowadays only the keyboards of the +2/+2A/B/+3 are usable.
I would pay more money to get a satisfying membrane for my Spectrum+ computers, if anyone would make it.
Today I successfully repaired a MGT Disciple belonging to a friend of mine, and in the process I had a chance to study a little this remarkable device. Reading through the schematic I was surprised to see that the folks at MGT added four side pins to the edge connector, which have been connected to a few internal signals (two on shadow ROM chip enable and one to output bit 5 of port $31). Supposedly, these proprietary pins are used some kind of expansion board. Does anyone know anything about such device?

After removing a faulty keyboard membrane from a ZX81 I have been left with the glue sticking to the plastic where the keyboard used to be.
Does anyone have a tried and true method for removing this residue? It's pretty hard to get off, and although it's not entirely necessary to remove before fitting the new one, it makes sense to do a proper job.
I have acetone, but that risks melting the plastic or at least marking it.
