Hi,

My Speccy 48k issue 4s starts to get temperamental when it's been on for a while. Machine itself is fine but loading gradually becomes more unreliable to the point of not working at all after 40 minutes or so. When the machine cools down it's fine again.

It's had all its caps replaced and has a new voltage regulator. A chum on Twitter suggested the ULA might be getting hot.

So perhaps a heatsink on the ULA might cure it? Question is, does anyone know how much room there is to put a heatsink in. What dimensions would I need? Has anyone else put a heatsink on their ULA?

Dear WOS,

I am currently building a home-made arcade stick for home use (and possibly mass production, if demand is high and if people like what they see). However, my greatest challenge is deciding the type of joystick I will be using. Allow me to explain the concept behind my idea:

It is intended to be a general-purpose controller delivering arcade-quality controls for the home computer user (I will likely use 8 buttons instead of 6 for the layout), using parts from arcade component manufacturers (Suzo-Happ, Sanwa Denshi, Seimitsu, just to name a few) - the closest people currently have when playing retro games is to use an older controller (like the "The Arcade" by Suzo) via an adaptor, or use a console peripheral via USB adaptor. I am trying to take into account as many genres of games as possible, including the lesser-played ones such as flight games and adventure games.

Here are some images to show you what each type of joystick looks like:

Hiya!

I recently acquired a fleabay 128K, and before putting power through it, I thought i'd open it up to see if anything looked obviously wrong (exploded caps, missing chips, etc). Here's what I've landed myself with:

At first, I thought it was missing the massive coil that sits in the circle at the top right, but i've since found images of 128k mobos that don't have it.

So.. should it have one? Is it the coil I've read about that only feeds the modulator, and is therefore like an appendix (I'll be using RGB)? Will powering it up cause any damage?

Hi everyone.

Ok, so I have a couple of 48k's that I have performed Wombles fantastic composite mod on. They work great here in Canada on my big screen Sony LCD TV and Commodore Amiga Monitor.

So I recently got my hands on a 128k Toastrack. I am reading on these forums that indeed the RGB output includes composite. I also see once I lifted the lid on the 128k that it still retains the modulator the same as the 48k's. So, I am a little confused. Can I mod the modulator in the same way as I have done for the 48k's? Neither my TV or monitor have an RGB input. I am happy with the quality of the composite output from the 48k's so personally that would suffice. Every RGB cable I can find online has a scart connector. No good for me.

An RGB to COMPOSITE video lead would be great. Is that possible?

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere on this great site. But I am tying myself in knots here trying to figure it out.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey guys,

I am looking for some advice, I hope you can point me in the right direction.

So, I went about replacing all the capacitors on my issue 4b board. This is something I have done several time before without any issue on other 48k's.

This particular spectrum was working ok, but the picture quality was poor hence changing the caps.

I inspected each origional cap as I removed them and most were well out of specification, C44 was actually open circuit.

Anyway. Upon completing the cap swap, I checked all the polarities, values etc and powered up at 9v with 750ma limited protection with my bench power supply.

The display area of the screen is dark grey with diagonal lines shimmering all over. Totally corrupt.

The voltages on the lower ram are well out of whack too.....

-5v = -5.1v
12v = .98v
+5v = 2.3v

I checked the voltage regulator, TR4 and TR5 and as far as I can tell they are ok. No shorts, and the readings all look fairly consistent with the initial start up test video from Zigg.net. Except, when checking the left hand leg on the voltage regulator using the 200k meter setting, the reading gradually rose up and past the 125 point in the video and continued until it went over limit. In the video it should peak at about 125. As you can probably tell I am new to this, so I am a little unsure how to interpret the numbers at times. To be sure I replaced all three of these components with new ones. This made no change to the voltages or display.

I have noticed that TR4, TR5 and C74, C46 are getting warm to the point that something begins to smell. I only had the board powered for about 45 secs. I checked TR4 and TR5 and they are still ok. I am not ruling out an error in my working whilst replacing these components, but I have scoured the board and can see no evidence of a solder bridges, placement or component capacity error, or other defect that may cause such behavior.

I am at the point where I think I should remove all the caps I replaced and start over, maybe one of them was faulty - they are all new.

I understand that I may now have issues with my lower ram now due to the weird voltages also.

Question.

Why does the 4b 48k schematic only show micro farad specs for each cap and not the voltages required for each cap? Or, am I missing something here?

On the schematics it also lists nf as a capacitor value in a particular location, when I understand that uf capacitors are used?

Anyway,

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and Merry Christmas!!

I have a 48k Issue 2 Speccy and for the life of me can't track down what the problem is with it. I initially thought that some of the uppe ram ic's were faulty as I wasn't getting the expected results when peeking and poking at it.

I went on to desoldered the upper ram ic's, socketed the board and replaced the ram with known good chips. Peeked and poked and was getting 65535 returned as expected for 48K. Turned the Spectrum off then on again peeked the memory according to the repair guide and didn't get 65535 but something completely different. Rinsed and repeated the last step and get 65535 again.

I have then replaced all the upper ram with known good ram from another Issue 2, same chips with same suffix and get 65535 returned as expected. But now when I try and load a 48K game, it loads all the way up until the last part when the game should start and the spectrum resets!

Got me totally stumped. thinking it cant now be the upper ram as I swapped and changed two lots of known good chips, that still work when placed back in the machines they came out of.

Any help appreciated.
Can someone suggest me, what I can do with this disk to read the files

I still have to try SAMdisk for test dumping this disk,
maybe this can get me more informations.

Update:
While doing a dump of the disk with RealSpec Emulator (DOS-Version)
("Read Real-Disk-to-.TRD-Image") I get the message:

This Floppy Disk was formatted using
Please read the manual for more info.

FINISHED
Disk transfer completed there were no errors

Now I can accessall the files on the disk.

My next steps will be to save all files back to a real 3,5" floppy-disk
and try them on my Betadisk 4.12 (as most of the files only seem to run on TR-DOS v4
and not v5. But all Emulators I now only support TR-DOS v5).

Update:

The rest of my problems with the disk seem to be solved:
1) I?ve managed to copy files from the .MGT-Disk-Images
with the PC-program "ZX Spectrum Navigator 1.14E beta1"
(=a Norton-Commander-Clone) to a directory on my PC harddisk
and back to an empty .TRD-Disk-File.
This can be written back to a real Diskette with RealSpec-Emulator
for use on real Spectrum/Betadisk 48k-Hardware.

2) I?ve used X128 Emulator V0.95B OPEN ALPHA which can emulate Betadisk 48k.
Now all files can be run within this emulator.

Now I will try to get in to with the authors of the TRDOS-Utilites
I?ve got from the disk.

Long time no post :)

So I have this 128K Spectrum (+2 ROMs) that I cannot for the life of me figure out where the problem lies.

Let's take a look at the display first:

As you can see, all the *even* columns display perfectly. All the *odd* columns are way out of whack.

RAM you say? Tried several different RAM chips. Same effect.

Must be the ULA you say? Tried 2 different Amstrad 40056s and 2 different Ferranti 7K001E-5s.

Clearly a circuit board fault? Been up and down the whole damn board. I can find no shorted paths. No open circuits.

I am totally lost as to a next step. A simple hint as to what is actually happening would be excellent.

Any ideas amongst the assembled masses?

I'm trying to revive my old grey +2....

First problem was a faulty RF signal, so I bought a SCART cable from Retro Computer Shack on e-bay (it's the one with the 3.5mm jack on it that plugs into the sound output on the +2 to take the audio to the SCART socket). The RF box has now been completely disconnected.

When I first used the SCART cable I had "wobbly" interference on the image, I've discovered that removing capacitor C31 as described here http://hw.speccy.cz/plus2mod.html has made the image rock solid. :D

There was also a bit of interference on the sound initially, but disconnecting the tape deck has removed that - I have a DivIDE and don't need the tape anyway.

The problem that I have now is that the sound volume from the AY-3-8912 chip is very low when compared with the 48k sound effects. If I turn the TV volume up so I can hear the 128k music, the 48k sound is way too loud. For example, the music in Renegade is very low when compared to the punching/kicking sound effects.

It was like this even with C31 in place, I think that all C31 does is mix the sound in with the RF signal so I don't think removing this has caused it.

Any ideas on how I can fix this? Is it possible to boost the 128k sound volume?

I wonder what is this ROM, are there any other modifications (beside the key-click and the colours) and how was this all done? The chip itself is an "Amstrad 40054 GI 8625 165". I always thought they could not be altered or am I wrong?

Hi folks,

As we know, some limited numbers of Z70700 Iss 1 boards exist (reported by Ben here). My grey +2 is one of these, and has an issue with video noise on RF out:

I had thought it was a peculiarity of this particular board, and after extensive probing of the ULA outputs I wasn't able to find a cause (the noise is evident on the RGB output pins on the ULA, but is filtered somewhere between it and the composite output which is perfectly clear).

Now a friend of mine has acquired a +2 with the same Z70700 board, and guess what, the same video noise.

I've recapped mine and performed the C31 mod to eliminate the audio carrier from the composite output, so it can't be that.

I'm curious as to what the cause might be, so I might investigate further. To that end, does anyone know of a schematic and layout for this board that's available anywhere?

The differences in layout between this and the earlier Z70500 Iss 3 board seem substantial enough, so I'd like to not be hampered by having to reverse engineer things if I can :)
The Software from the HxC
Thought I'd start a new thread as this is a different fault

Tried a couple of games that I know work and they either reset the computer half way through loading or at the end.

Ran the memory test
PRINT PEEK 23732 + PEEK 23733 * 256

I get the result 32804 (should be 65535)

So I then run POKE 32805,85 : PRINT PEEK 32805

I get the result 85

Next I run POKE 32805,170 : PRINT PEEK 32805

I get 170

So what does this tell me?

I got a new keyboard membrane for my Spectrum+ plugged it in and low and behold the weird left to right printing of the copyright message disappeared.

However the Spectrum is now too fast... (sigh) so whenever I press a key I get 4 key presses.

I slapped on every diagnostic tool I could get my hands on onto a ZXC3 ROM cartridge, and ran them all, all tests passed, keyboard, RAM, ROM, ULA, IRQ etc.

After about 5 minutes the Spectrum slows down and then hangs, roboots cause the machine to return back to the copyright message but it's not responsive. Although it would boot into the ZXC3, though even that will hang eventually.

If I leave the machine off for 10 minutes and reboot it boots and returns into it's whizzy mode.

Now when the Spectrum is in the hung mode where neither the joystick or the keyboard create any input, if I slap in my Jetpac ROM... I can play it... with both keyboard and Joystick... the speed of the game isn't quite correct but it does play properly. I reboot into basic.. and it's hung.

I'm wondering:

It could be the ROM. If the Spectrum ROM overheats I guess it can't run, when I play jetPac it doesn't use the ROM (except for interrupts).

It could be interrupt related, how do interrupts occur they must need a clock?

Any thoughts anyone?
