With reference to Microl - The Data Base, I have two different versions. The supporting documentation is a letter dated 17th January 1983, from TEMPUS (which seems to be a distributor for Microl based at the same address), stating they?d received a batch of upgraded software. Also there is a slip which explains the upgrades, mainly key changes.

So the first version comes on a cassette with blue print. The second comes on a tape with red print. I have got both copies to load in to Spin, via wave file. And I have converted the blue one to TZX via makeTZX but I cannot get the red one to load.

To establish this I tested the print line command, Q key in first version, and L key in second version.

To further complicate matters, The TZX in Infoseek (marked as original issue), seems to be yet another version, as when this loads it starts with different questions on screen. (this is not the first version). But the TAP version seems to be the same as my second version.

Hope this makes sense.

Can anyone help me convert the original tape to .TZX from a wave file. ?

Also I am uploading the two wave files, and the letter, and addendum. And the TZX for the first version.

I'm sorry if I've looked in the wrong places and not found it, but what are the rules regarding a game being listed as either:

ZX Spectrum 48K
ZX Spectrum 48K/128K
ZX Spectrum 128K

I know that if a game only had a 128K version released and could not be run on a 48K model, it must be classified as 128K.

If a game had either
a) a 48K version and a 128K version of it, or
b) a single version which could be loaded on a 48K model or 128K model, and when it detected a 128K model made use of the extra features, usually either enhanced sound and/or loading additional data at the start which would otherwise be multi-load in 48K mode
it must be classified as 48K/128K because it behaves differently with them.

Clearly if a game crashes on the 128K model for some reason and had to be loaded in 48K mode, or could not be played at all on a 128K machine, then it must be classified as 48K.

But where does a game go which was advertised as being for Spectrum 48K/128K/+2 etc, but makes no use whatsoever of the enhanced features of the 128K models, even though it can load and play fine in 128K mode (but is identical to the 48K mode)? Should it be 48K, or 48K/128K? I'm thinking it should be categorised as 48K regardless of what it said on the box, but what is the official rules on this?

I wrote two simple educational games in 1988 called "Easy Time" and "Easy Maths" (may have been "Easy Math"). They were written in compiled BASIC, and were conversions of existing games for the Amstrad CPC and Atari ST.

The publisher was "A.P.T." (Applied Programming Techniques) and was run from the top floor of a software shop called "BASIC Enterprises" in Kettering, Northamptonshire. I had my school work experience there, two weeks working in the shop, and wrote the games at home afterwards. The owner was Ray Carver. There was one other full-time programmer who worked on business software.

In "Easy Time", a clock was drawn in the top-right of the screen displaying a time. The clock had markers but no numbers. If the player typed in the time as shown on the clock, a mouse in a red car drove across the bottom of the screen left-to-right to ring a bell. I seem to remember there was a selectable difficulty, to use whole hours or hours and minutes.

In "Easy Maths", a sum was displayed on screen, and a series of possible answers displayed at the bottom. A plane flew over and dropped a parachutist. The player had to guide the parachutist left or right to land on the correct answer. Again there were difficulty choices between simple addition / subtraction, and multiplication / division.

The chances of anyone finding a copy are extremely rare - I myself never actually saw a production cassette of any of the versions of these games. Though I had little contact after that. My remuneration was a mere ?20 (per title - I think) single payment.

Not my first paid programming job though - I had ported a simple VIC-20 treasure-hunt game for the school's Maths Department to the BBC-B, and was paid a whole Mars Bar!

That price can be clearly seen in the last two issues (next to issue number):
ftp://ftp.worldofspectrum.org/pub/sinclair/games-inlays/Covertapes/DivertimentosIssue4.jpg

I found an old thread I took part in 1997 on comp.sys.sinclair. In it John Pickford says that

"The later Ultimate games (after they sold the name) were done my Mark
Betteridge - who still works for them (he did K I ). "

So is this the bloke who wrote Cyberun, Pentagram, Martianoids & Bubbler?

In this interview ( http://www.1up.com/features/rare-rare ) he states:
"I started straight from school -- that was back in the '84-'85 time frame." so he would have been there at that time.
Here he's credited with having a hand in 19 games but none of the Spectrum ones are listed.

looks like the demo of Robo (40 levels)

although I haven't found if the demo level is to be found among the 40 levels of Robo. I think the two entries should be merged though.

The full name of the publisher/producer seems to be "Inferno Software Inc", although the first word is misspelled as "Iferno" in the loading screen of the first entry.

I know I already mentioned this issue years ago, but I saw that "Brat Attack" is using in the entry the inlay appeared in the paper magazine, so I wonder if, the rest of the games can do the same, as for example, there are many games published in MH which had their own cover in the magazine, so you could cut it and use it in real tape shell...
