Hiya,

I'm new here, hope you don't mind me popping round.

I was just wondering if anyone knows what the copyright status is over photos and illustrations featuring a spectrum. I've seen a lot of t-shirts featuring it for sale.

Does Amstrad/Sinclair own the copyright over images of the Spectrum? If so, does Oliver Frey owe Sir Clive / Alan Sugar lots of money for using it on the cover of Crash? (Obviously, Crash did so much for the spectrum that they'd never have claimed it, but I was just wondering...)

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone out there can help me service this a 3'' disk drive of my speccy. I have replaced quite a lot belts in such drives but this time this +3 has surprised me. Even if I have replaced the old belt with brand new I am getting a Missing address mark error on some sector and the typical retry, ignore or cancel. I am sure that the disks are ok as at the same time are working fine on a second +3. I would realy appreaceated if anyone could give me of any help. I have also cleaned the head of the drive but it is still not working. Is there any chance to be the cable? I have checked the drive having the +3 open and I could see the head is moving up and down to read the sectors but nothing more... Please help

I've been looking through the schematics a bit today - it seems the main restriction is the ULA - if one from a 128+ or later could be spliced in, it doesn't seem too difficult (rerouting the signals notwithstanding)
I've not sat down and really gone through this properely yet, but intend to - assuming I'm on the right track, I will give this a go.
be nice to have a little SVGA connector on the back of a rubber key :)
I've also seen a couple vague references to a factory mod to issue 2 pcbs which actually provided an RBG interface - can anyone add to, or have any thoughts on this ?

Anyway, I keep plugging away, but Im stuck again. Im not entirely sure how to port a compiled binary into an emulator. Spin seems to let you load a binary file straight into the memory, but it wants an address to load to. Is there any specific area that I should load code into? All I can do is make it crash , I cant even get other peoples source code to run yet, let alone my own.

Secondly, 16384 to 23296 is the graphics memory right? Putting code into these addresses alters the display, but where abouts do you put data for the beeper/Ay chip. Are there specific addresses for the Ay registers or does this work in a different way?
any help'd be appriciated

[Posted on behalf of the CSS FAQ Maintenance Team]

As many of you will be aware, the comp.sys.sinclair FAQ is currently under review. In order to determine how best to proceed with future updates, please spend a few minutes answering the following questions:

1) As a *general rule*, do you find the current content of the FAQ to be accurate?

2) Do you find the current style and layout of the FAQ adequate, or would you prefer a new design?

3) Do you use the Offline version of the FAQ? Should the Offline version be "plain", with an enhanced version (same content) available Online?

4) Which sections of the FAQ do you find most useful, most of the time?

5) Which sections of the FAQ do you feel are unnecessary, or need significant work to become useful?

6) Would you prefer that a smaller, completely overhauled FAQ be released initially, with existing and updated/expanded content progressively added as it is verified?

If so, which sections do you believe are the most important to have available immediately?

7) Are commonly used peripherals (Interface I, Interface II, ZX Printer, ZX Microdrives, Kempston Joystick/Printer interfaces, etc. etc.) adequately covered, or should more information be included with links where necessary to external resources?

8) Are non-Sinclair/Amstrad machines adequately covered (Timex variants, etc.) ?

9) Should a more distinct section be created and maintained for current developments (SE Basic, Spectrum SE, Sprinter, etc.) including a summary of ongoing hardware projects and current upgrades, with appropriate links?

10) Which site do you usually visit to read the FAQ?

Along with your reply, please include your browser type and version number.
Please reply directly to cssfaq@worldofspectrum.org if possible - this will make it easier to consolidate responses. Those of you who maintain a mirror of the FAQ will be contacted directly and asked to provide additional information.

Hi,

I moved this from the sales thread because it seems more appropriate...anyway...

I was twerping around the idea of turning a Spectrum into a web server but I didn't bother because I couldn't think of an easy way of getting the Spectrum to execute my code (and no way would I be loading it in from tape..)

Anyway, I had a thought about connecting a Dataman S4 to the edge connector; I can then use this in its EPROM emulation mode to run code.

I've been told that the Spectrum has some feature where, if it finds a certain code at a page boundary, it will execute the next two instructions as a jump to user code - this seems like an easy way to get it to run my TCP/IP stack/web server code.

I imagine that it requires some address decoding etc...Anyone managed to do this?

Cheers,

Browsing the online documentation for the Spectrum I came across a peculiar discrepency.
As we all know the start of the RAM is at 16384 which is where the screen memory resides. The screen memory ends at 23296. After this we have system variables.
From my old +3 manual I already knew that the system variables the +3 ROM used started straight after this and that they refered to paging.
Of course the 48k doesn't use paging so I went and looked at one of the online manuals for the 48k and found that the system variables start at KSTATE, 23552, which is the same position as KSTATE on every other Spectrum.

The only question I have is what on earth the memory before KSTATE and after the video memory is used for on a 48k - if at all - and why there is such a gap unless more variables were planned for paging - and other things associated with hardware Amstrad added (so unlikely unless Sir Clive is clairvoyant).

Hello,

Earlier while in the local drinking establishment, I got to thinking about the infamous Landlord of the Dancing Ogre.

And as a result, a few questions sprang to mind.

1. Who was Gordo Greatbelly? Since it has been proven that Lloyd Mangram of Crash Magazine was at least 4 different people.

2. And where is he now?

Necros!!!

Oooh! Haven't been here in a while... Hi all...
No, this is not a rudimentary surfing query. I was wondering how people use retro archives like WoS etc... I know statistics suggest people engage in bulk downloads but I have no interest in owning everything (well, I have some interest but not strong enough to sit around paying per minute for dialup waiting for the whole shebang to download :) )
When I first discovered WoS around a year or so ago I spent a day or three going through the A-Z games archive downloading what I owned and recognised.
Now I download occasionally when I hear of a game worth playing (or so terrible it's worth seeing.)
How do you use these archives? Do you spend days leeching the entire thing or just browse and take what's interesting?
Disclaimer: Any perceived rambling is due to your drunkenness, not mine.
