I am an old school roleplayer (and dungeon master) and I am going to write a new adventure for my friends. I would like to write the adventure using my good old ZX Spectrum.
I am looking for a software to write it. There is any Spectrum software that can help a Dungeon Master to write an adventure?

Otherwise, I am thinking to write a simple BASIC program: typing a number (the number that is on the map) the program will open a description of the dungeon room.

Any idea or tip?

I'm just wondering why people are here?

Why are we working on or using old hardware? Why are some of you putting a lot of effort in upgrading the hardware when it will never be as good in terms of speed or graphics quality as a modern PC?

I'm not saying for a microsecond that we shouldn't, I'm just curious about your individual reasons.

To start the ball rolling, my reasons are :-
1. I know people on WoS liked my original games so I'd like to add some value to that where I know it will be appreciated.
2. I enjoyed designing and writing my own games and these days I'm just working on games where I have no design input at all so this is fun for me.
3. Once I've got a full set of code together I may very well go on to write some brand new games for the Spectrum and then go on to release them for other platforms. Potential Kickstarter project and all that.
4. Nostalgia for simpler times. These days a team of 50 people on a game is not unheard of and you need to continually justify the project to managers and investors by doing endless demos :(
5. Modern projects have way too many 3rd party libraries. I much prefer using my own code.
6. Spectrum development is clean. Modern build systems can be over complex. The project I'm working on now uses Batch Files, Perl, Lua, Python, it's own internal C-variant script language and another one from the console manufacturer. FFS!

So, I ask again, Why?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4hXwTF43qY

My biggest and most sophisticated video production so far. I hope you like it. Enjoy!

Did you know that the ATARI JAGUAR is a kind of a cousin to the Sinclair ZX Spectrum and QL range of computers because a team of former Sinclair employees (Martin Brennan, John Mathieson and Richard Miller) were the key people behind the JAGUAR. The two processors, code named Tom and Jerry, were designed by Martin Brennan and John Mathieson while at Flare2. The controlling processor was a 68000. Nick Terry wrote the cross assembler for the two custom processors and Tim Dunn did additional work on the chip set and project managed the CD drive accessory after moving to ATARI. All ex Sinclair Research.

The ATARI JAGUAR, its 20th anniversary and related video productions are the reason why I was absent of the Sinclair scene for the last couple of weeks if not months. From this week on the Jag may rest and in accordance with my web alias QLvsJAGUAR the Sinclair QL becomes again my retro-topic no. 1.

Hi all -

It has become my current project to help a certain gentleman of note in our community bring an old project from the 80s to life. I can do the grunt work, but I have a need for talented artists or illustrators.

The project requires scenes from a book to be rendered into picture form, black and white (think Games Workshop's gothic style) but high quality. Also some quantity of smaller items relevant to the project's theme to be inserted liberally inside.

I cannot stress enough that the reward for this, aside from a note in the credits, will be entirely to help bring this to fruition rather than any monetary payment.

It will be a month or so before I'm ready to start using any contributions, so in that time anyone interested should:

1. PM me to declare their interest (or announce it here)
2. Get drawing - the theme will be Spectrum game heros - and send me examples of what you can do. You can also post them here for all to see. Note that I am NOT looking for graphics drawn on a Speccy! Take your chosen characters and draw them as you'd imagine them to look aside from their pixel-based representations.

I'll possibly use the work of more than one artist in this project, if the quality is good and the art styles don't clash too much.

If there are any takers, then let's see what you can come up with!
Knight Lore and Robocop would be monoload (Knight Lore doesn't need anything after loaded, Robocop is multiload in 48k but in 128k it loads everything at once), but Turrican and Butch Hard Guy not (Turrican is multiload in both 48 and 128k models, Butch Hard Guy loads a screen after finishing the game).
- How can I know what games have savegames? Most games can't, but text adventures, strategy games and some others (Ace 2088) can.
Having read the book a couple of times, it's a very enjoyable romp through Sir Clive's businesses ventures; however, it does seem very harsh on Clive personally. My rose-tinted view of the "Uncle Clive" of the Spectrum era doesn't sit well with the character in the book; what's the collective retrospective view on Sir C as an actual businessman - technology revolutionary or lucky/opportunistic hapless guy who got lucky? Is the book unjustly harsh on my childhood hero?

2. Which emulator can network with itself on one machine or over a network 64 such systems will one day be able to create a 1080p image out of only 48 machines video output = 8x6
timex only needs 4x6 and the 6 can be halved as soon as we have some kind of hardware interlace like the spectra ula+ or zx prism

Hello..
Just out of curiosity, has anyone actually used +3 CP/M for any practical purpose? I remember booting it up a couple of times years ago, just to see what CP/M looked like on a Spectrum, but other than the novelty factor, it wasn't of any kind of practical use to me.

Hey there everyone, forgive me if this is not the right place for this.

I am a vintage computing enthusiast front he states and I just recently started getting interested in the Specy and ZX81. While looking for info about ROMable FORTH implementations for said machines I found a small amount of info about Skywave FORTH, and its predecessor for the 81. The problem is, my google fu has failed me. the only thing ive been able to find is a scan of the Manuel for the xz81 FORTH. So if anyone has any information about it I would be most appreciative.

Also, is there a ROM image of it floating around anywhere? As I am still attempting to acquire an actual machine to play with.

Another question, considering shipping is hell moving across the pond, which model of specy would be the best? As in least amount of stuff to import, or should I just pick up a 2068 even though it is not the most compatible? From my limited knowledge it seems to me that the +2 might be my best bet as its 128k compatible as well as having inbuilt tape. If anyone has an opinion I would be happy to hear them!

Thanks for your time!
