Hi Guys,

Can anyone explain why Manic Miner ZX81 is not able to reproduce the exact bitmap sprites for Miner Willy, the Keys and various other sprites in the game.

I understand that the ZX81 is made up of a character based screen, but

The character sprites are still 8x8 pixels making up a 256x192 screen area

I assume there are enough 'character' graphics available on each frame to generate the required sprites

I understand the reason for the platforms behind willy disappearing (can't by definition bitwise-OR two characters together) but the sprites are still a bit of a loss.

Thanks in advance,

The well known "attic bug" caused by invalid arrow data. By applying a couple of extra pokes in addition to the usual lives / fall height to remove some collision detection...

POKE 37982,0
POKE 37994,0

...its possible to carry on in a fashion as the game continues to deteriorate. :) Eventually it is likely to crash though. It does seem to vary each time as well depending on the route taken and how long sometimes you stay in a room. Its also required at some stage to alter the start room as the Bathroom can become an unsuitable start location due to fire cells:

POKE 34795.X

Where it all starts

Notice the nasty has gone from above Willy and is now making its way across from the bottom of the screen:

Its also moved here too:

Esmeralda (Esmerelda?) is also awol:

At this stage, the text for items collected starts to get corrupted as well. Notice the dancing mouse making its way right across the screen:

Bit of corruption here too:

One nasty gone from here although there is the occasional pixel flicker:

Both gone from here. Around this stage the ingame tune becomes corrupted slightly as well:

West Wing Roof does not look too good:

Chapel empty (as is immediately apparent when the attic bug is "initialised") no other apparent damage though:

Kitchen chefs, two are missing and one is moving horizontally:

Same here too, although one is making its way right off the screen to return on the far right soon:

Text message starting to get quite bad now:

More corruption inside the MegaTrunk:

Over The Drive does not look too bad if you ignore the flickering sprites:

Off Licence has gained a few more cells:

MegaTree is starting to look a bit unwell:

Bridge sprites have slightly changed and (usefully!) something has appeared to make Willy's bridge crossing a bit easier:

Too much wine ?

More Tree damage:

Bathroom has been "restyled":

Top landing is not looking brilliant either:

Willy's mansion is really starting to fall apart now:

Stuff of (bug) nightmares:

The attic is in full swing:

Halfway up the corrupted wall:

Chapel guardian visiting Cuckoo's Nest:

Dr Jones may not believe it, although I would:

Even room 47 (the unused "[" room) is effected:

West Bedroom looks decidedly uncomfortable:

The Yacht:

Above The West Bedroom:

Back Stairway is broken:

Well, Maria has gone but there's too many fire cells (the pillow) for that to be any comfort:

Conservatory Roof has seen better days:

To the kitchens is quite interesting, its almost normal. Note the three fire cells to make it difficult to jump across:

Security has deteriorated further, compare to earlier screenshot:

It's the start of a new year and with it brings a new wave of optimism and hope! :)

In light of the relative success of twitter/speccynews (in the sense that a bunch of people *are* using it, frequently), I was contemplating whether a bit more stepped up collaborative knowledge sharing couldn't be pulled off.

The idea is to have a central place for detailed information by anyone and everyone from the speccy community. A central repository of articles, writings, information etc. It should have the following primary goals:

1) Categorized collection of information possibly covering: Technical posts (on H/W, S/W, anything speccy related), Games or S/W (maybe someone wants to review the current crop of CGC games), Private projects (maybe dm_boozefreak could post regular updates of Miles Mad Mission 2 with photos etc, or Winston's H/W Interface project), Tutorials/Guides (Maybe someone would like to share an assembly lang tutorial or RoseCotton's handy assimilation of Spin's Assembler directives etc), short BASIC or Assembly snippets, et al.

2) Make it easy for people to post, edit and share stuff. Which rules out the wikia IMO - far too many people find it intimidating.

3) Allow a limited form of interaction among the authors of post and others who may be interested in it. It isn't meant to be a discussion forum (we have WoSF for that!) but a limited form of exchange would surely be beneficial.

Like speccynews, there is no pressure on anybody (members or otherwise!) to contribute. If you have something interesting to share, please do so but no obligations otherwise. If it works out, great! If not, well no skin off anybody's nose!

A bit of Q & A might help clear things up a bit:

1) Is this ZX Shed in disguise?
No, not really. ZX Shed was (is?) a bit more news and fun oriented. This one is more knowledge repository oriented.

2) So why not just use the wikia?
People find wikia a bit more complicated than normal blogs. The interface isn't as user friendly.

3) Isn't WoS supposed to be the repository of all things speccy?
Sure is! However, I'd like more people to get involved and have a bit more richer and interactive content than is possible on WoS currently. IAC, I see it as a support act to WoS.

4) What are we looking at here?
My thoughts are to go with either a collaborative blog via Wordpress or BlogSpot way for a couple of reasons: it's easy to setup and hassle free to manage (no server maintenance!), categorization (hierarchical also) of information is possible - you click on a category and all posts belonging in that category are listed, it supports tags (makes it easy to search for relevant info!), membership is free and multiple user can post on one blog (under relevant category of course!), offers moderation capabilities, supports rich multi-media content, twitter and facebook updates are integrated I believe.

I'm very much interested in knowing if *any* of you think this is workable. IAC, I'm going to try and get something going in the coming days to lay the foundation, so to speak, and to give a clearer idea on what may be done. There is no hard and fast rule on how this thing can evolve. Indeed, I'm hoping we can all help shape this into something everyone can use and contribute to!

Feel free to point out any obvious flaws in the scheme of things or ask for more clarifications.

Just been wandering around town (Hastings) and came across an old pushbike for sale in one of the old junk yards. It comes complete with attached Sinclair Research Zeta electric motor thing. Didn't look to be in great nick but id not seen one before. They were asking ?40 for apparently the whole bike and zeta combo.

Any thoughts from anyone if that is any good? Not really too bothered myself but was fun to see it and if anyone might be interested i might be persuaded to see if i could get it for you?
I use deathwish 3, when I load it up it just hangs, when the space bar is pressed repeatedly it bricks to 128 start up screen.

So since I'm now a proud owner of divIDE and ESXDOS with TR-DOS emulation, I would like to make some use of the latter.

Basically I want to try out on-machine development, probably with ALASM. So, how to set up a comfortable build environment?

I guess it's not possible to have a nice Pentagon-sytle "reset service" on the 48k, or is it?
So I assume I should stick ALASM in drive B, maybe a compressor or gfx editor in drive C, auto-boot a file commander in drive A and finally boot ALASM from the commander, right?

If so, what's the recommended choice for a file commander?

And what does "TR-DOS emulation is not available in MapRAM mode (BETADISK.SYS will not be loaded)" mean?

Also, is there any source of documentation about TR-DOS out there that's not in Russian? I've found ftp://ftp.worldofspectrum.org/pub/sinclair/hardware-info/TR-DOS_Programming.txt but other than that I'm pretty lost. (Mind you, I'm lost in that file too, but nevermind...)

SpecBAS 0.789 released

Hi all!

Back with another SpecBAS release - this one's mostly just about sprites and bug fixes. One new addition I do quite like is the expression calculator... you can now (just like 128k BASIC) tap in an expression and press ENTER to get a result.

But unlike 128k BASIC, you can also get string results as well as numeric and use the full range of SpecBAS's functions. Nice :)

Here's the What's new:

v0.0.0.789
==========

Added:

SPRITE PUT id - places a permanent copy of the specified sprite on the screen or window it belongs to
Expression calculator - any expression entered as a direct command (SIN 45 or 1+4 or CHR$ 33 for example) is evaluated and the result pasted into the direct command window. Beware, a single integer will still delete program lines!
LOAD "filename" BANK NEW numvar - loads a file into a bank and assigns a BankID to the numvar
More optimisations to expressions: LET a=(b/2)/8 for example now devolves into the much quicker LET a=b*0.0625. Also works for strings of multiplies, divides, adds and subtracts.
SAVE now saves by default as ASCII text, and does not use the binary format anymore. The binary format can still be loaded, however
More dithers to GRAPHIC REMAP - dtFLOYD, dtJARVIS, dtSTUCKI, dtBURKES, dtSIERRA3, dtSIERRA2, dtSIERRA, dtATKINSON, dtSTEVENSON - all quite slow though
Sprite frame numbering starts at 1 and counts up, rather than frame zero
You can now jump to the declaration of a LABEL by typing the label (@mylabel, for example) and pressing TAB in the editor
Better error positioning in the direct command window. Errors are produced by a "dummy run", so may not match where you expect them to!
SPFRAME(id) returns the current frame number of the specified sprite's animation or -1 if stopped
SPCOLL(id) returns the collided state of the specified sprite
Sprite collision detection - with sprites and scenery, event driven with ON COLLIDE ...
SPRITE MIRROR/FLIP id - Does what it says on the tin. Permanently.
SPRITE FRAME id,n [PAUSE m] - sets a sprite's current anim frame, and optionally delays the next frame
SPRITE ANIM STOP id - halts the sprite's animation
SPRITE ANIM PLAY id,start [TO end] [OPTION opt] allows better control of animation with loops, pingpong etc
SPRITE POINT id,x,y - sets the sprite "hotspot" which is basically an offset used when drawing the sprite
Better error positions for syntax errors in the editor
MENUBOX can now take a string array rather than a list of options. LET a=MENUBOX("Title",a$())

Fixed:

Strange bug that prevented strings from being sliced by one index
An obscure bug that caused some commands to be replaced by others - Delphi was at fault here
RGB and HSV were incorrectly optimised by the compiler
Scrolling via the text output routines (CAT, PRINT, LIST et al) no longer corrupts text
OUT now attempts to create the destination if it exists
Eliminated flicker in the editor when mousewheel scrolling
Loading of string and numeric dynamic arrays now work correctly
LIST BANK doesn't get confused with Bank ID numbers now
Sprites can now be loaded correctly when saved with SAVE "filename" BANK id
Sprites attached to an invisible window were showing incorrectly
Automatically remove invalid characters and empty statements from the ends of lines
Range checking in SPRITE CLONE operations
Matrix addition, subtraction got their parameters wrong. D'oh!
Labels declared alone on the last line of the program with no following statement were incorrectly stored
Colour fonts weren't very transparent, really
Fixed an offset bug in the DEBUG command, ironically enough
A bug in the sprite frame address handling
PALETTE COPY could overwrite screen information by trying to write to palette entries > 255
A nasty bug in the dynamic array hashing function
A bug in BIN followed by anything but a sequence of 1s and 0s

Enjoy - get it at http://www.specbas.co.uk/

Pi and Linux versions will be along soon, I'm sure :)

Apologies up front for this noob question which I'm sure will have been answered many times before.

I have lots of BASIC programs I wrote as a kid back in the 80s saved on tape. After 30 years they still lhey load from a tape recorder to a real Spectrum, but I would now like to get those onto my Windows 7 laptop so I can use/edit them in an emulator (ZXSpin).

There seems to plenty of stuff in WoS and the net on converting TZX to wavs for loading to a real Spectrum, but very little on capturing from tape and converting to TZX.

I have tried various programs from the utilities section on the WoS site with varying degrees of failure. The closest I got was using Taper, which I used to capture from tape to laptop and save as TZX, but the file wont load in ZXSpin.

Clearly it wasn't so problematic for all the contributors to the WoS Archive! So how have other folks done this? Have I missed a page on the WoS website? What utilities did you use and what steps did you follow? Any tips or pointers would be very much appreciated.

JSW1 - Changes Between Releases

Here is a list I'm working on of differences between JSW versions. I'm not currently 100% sure what all the changes do although by using one of the JSW disassembly's it should be possible to fill in the gaps. I'm ignoring the Ventamatic release as its based on 'Final' with only text changes, the code is the same as far as I can tell when comparing hex dumps.

To keep it semi sensible to read:

Memory Location (decimal) *** Pre-Release Version *** Normal Release *** PGC Bugfix *** TSAM Speedlocked

33804: 151 *** 151 *** 151 *** 195

33805: 111 *** 111 *** 111 *** 202

33806: 238 *** 238 *** 238 *** 135

These three control the keypad startup. The TSAM is the only retail version with no functioning keypad. Its interesting to note these changes are slightly different to the usual "three pokes" that most people use.

34251: 000 *** 000 *** 000 *** 018

34252: 004 *** 000 *** 000 *** 000

I think these two have something to do with the clock / ticker. Note that only the TSAM version has a change here and there was also a change (34252) with pre-release compared to all other releases. More so as the TSAM uses the earlier ManicMiner in-game tune too. I suspect it was built using a pre-release version.

34273: 000 *** 000 *** 000 *** 018

34274: 001 *** 000 *** 000 *** 000

34275: 112 *** 000 *** 000 *** 000

I think these are related to the music counter, although I'm not sure. They seem to change what were three NOP's before a LD BC, 2862 to just one NOP and a LD (DE), A with one NOP after.

36635: 231 *** 231 *** 231 *** 239

I've seen this listed before as 'unknown'. It seems to change key 5 to do nothing, possibly to ensure an Interface2 (using keys 67890) works properly ?

42183: 092 *** 028 *** 011 *** 075

Move invisible object from 1st Landing. Interesting to note there was a change here with pre-release compared to normal as well as the other variants doing different things too.

56876: 008 *** 008 *** 004 *** 004

The Banyan tree bug (quite difficult to climb!) The pre-release and normal releases both have the earth block here (008) whereas the PGC and TSAM have a water block instead (004) which is probably what was originally intended at a guess.

59901: 213 *** 213 *** 082 *** 082

The infamous Attic Bug. Some pokes seem to change 59900 instead. Both PGC and TSAM change 213 to 82, this causes the arrow to start on screen instead some of the 'unofficial' pokes which simply remove it instead so the Attic only has one arrow instead of two as it was designed for.

60231: 012 *** 012 *** 000 *** 000

The Conservatory Roof bug. Similar to the Banyan Tree bug in a way except a fire block instead of air was used. The pre-release and final both have the fire, the PGC and TSAM have an air block.

Im in the planning stages of a game, which from all the searches I've done, ( but I may be wrong) has never been done on the spectrum.

My question is, PC games have a video intros and cut scenes, can a very, very basic form of these be done on the spectrum.

I.E. convert a avi file to work on the spectrum

Can it be done.
