How do they do this? (Q on mistyped URLs)

edited February 2006 in Chit chat
I was browsing around the webthingy and noticed a URL which was incomplete, it said www.worldofspectrum (without the .org) ... I didn't actually notice it until afterwards but I had already clicked it ... lo and behold I was redirected to http://gba---and---rom.com/

So my question is why didn't the browser (Ff & IE) say "screw you, that's an incomplete URL!" ?

I am up to date on anti spyware and use a firewall. Is it possible I may have a redirector of some sorts (though I have not experienced anything else) ?

If it's not a redirector of some sorts then how did the "gba" site "grab" me?

Just tried it and got redirected to the very same site. All I can think is someone else has used the 'www.worldofspectrum' part as their own domain name, without actually registering it.

Now I imagine this is the point where the "forever helpful" Philip Kendall will tactlessly tell me I'm completely wrong.

    Necros.

What seems to be happening, is that the browser knows it's incomplete (since it obviously lacks a top level domain) and "helpfully" sticks .com at the end for you.
But that's the wrong one in this case, as it's taken by one of those Greedy Bastards also known as domain squatters.

If you were reading about the Y2K bug you might want to buy a tent just in case you have to go on the lamb because of mobs etc.

Oh, wait ... that date has already passed. Y3K anyone?
