Firefly

edited May 2007 in Chit chat
I bought the DVD a few days ago and I really like it so far. Some of the episodes are hilarious especially Our Mrs. Reynolds and Jaynestown. I'm about halfway through the series now. The last episode I watched was Ariel, which I thought was excellent. Those men with blue hands are really creepy, and that device they used that caused people to bleed to death - that was weird (and gruesome too). I hope there are more episodes like that.

Serenity was released today and I'm planning to buy it on Wednesday. :)

it was a travesty that Firefly was cancelled, and an even bigger travesty that not that many people went to see Serenity in the cinema, even though it got nothing but rave reviews!

Here's hoping that the DVD sales (I got mine first thing yesterday - the outtakes is pretty damned funny) allows the studios to consider a sequel or new series.

There have already been 3 comics that take the story from the end of the tv series to the beginning of the film, as for the tv series you can buy the whole series on dvd for ?12.97 from amazon. I agree on the firefly commentries they are funny with Nathon Fillion and Joss Whedon taking the mick out of each other this is a rare case of me listening to an audio commentry usually its the " oh that actress was so giving in that scene " sort of crap but not with these two.

Jewel Staite is fine!!! Have you seen her in Stargate Atlantis? *drools* :) Kaylee is my favourite character.

Jayne is my 2nd favourite. He's got some of the funniest lines.

    bump!

    quick question:

i'm thinking of buying this but I just want to know does the story actually end? (ie - did they wrap up loose ends because they knew it was being cancelled).

I dont want to get into it and then find it ends on some massive cliffhanger.

I havent seen any of it (or the film) so no spoilers please!

They don't wrap the story in the series but most of the loose ends are tied up with Serenity. Some of them aren't but ... I'll leave you to find them out yourself. :)

    cheers Necros.

i never fancied this series much before cos I'm not a sci-fi fan but the missus is and she just introduced me to 'Space: Above and Beyond' which I'm finidng surprisingly enjoyable. So I might get something out of Firefly.

plus I'm a big fan of Buffy/Angel so I guess it makes sense.

I thought Serenity blew monkey nuts.

Does that mean you liked it or you hated it? I'm a little out of touch with the modern teenage slang? :)

Ah thankyou for the compliment, I guess its an American term picked up from my teenage stepkids.

I didn't like it. I am a scifi fan and was really looking forward to it after all the hype I read about it.

I did not watch the series so maybe that has something to do with it but I thought it was a really 3rd rate movie.

Another one that was given similar hype and was 'tat' would be 'The Cave' - avoid at all costs.

well I eventually took the plunge.

Bloody hell... Firefly is absolutely brilliant. I'm only 6 episodes in so NO SPOILERS PLEASE!

we're not going to cane all the episodes cos obviously there are only 14 so we watching 1 or 2 a week and then will watch the film but I've literaly loved every minute of it so far.

The whole Western thing is odd but totally works, in fact the more Westerny the episodes the better they are. The Captain (who is still Caleb to me) is one of the best TV characters ever.

finally watched the whole series and just finished watching the film.

fantastic stuff from start to finish. Up there with 'Oz' as my favourite series of all time.

film was a bit disorientating at first but ties up the story brilliantly. would hate to have seen it without seeing the series first.

cheers for starting this thread Necros as that got me into it.

Yes, I also thoroughly enjoyed watching all of the Firefly episodes, and Serenity.

I liked the humour in it. I love the episodes that looked like they were filmed on the Paramount backlot. There's always been great tradition of shooting sci-fi in a Western setting (studio or location), and firefly did it really well IMHO.

Thinking about this phenomenon, the following also spring to mind:-
Star Trek:TOS - Spectre of the Gun
    Doctor Who - The Gunfighters
Red Dwarf - Gunmen of the Apocylpse

    There's probably loads more.

But it's funny how some of the best sci-fi series were axed before their time. I just finished watching Starcops (1987) recently - only 9 episodes were ever made of that one.

Currently watching the X-files all the way through, at an average rate of a couple of episodes a day. For some some reason - I'd never watched it before.

    Big Bump!!!

I just finished watching the entire series again. It's still totally fantastic. I wish they would make more episodes.

Is it true that you can see Jubal Early's ship following them from the Ariel episode onwards? I read that somewhere but I keep forgetting to look closely when I'm watching.

Write it down on a sticky ... place it on the TV ... watch the series for the third time and this time around do take note whether the ship is there or not.

When done, come back and give us a full report on each incidence, the h:m:s also please.

If you saw Serenity before Firefly, then you would think it was crap - because you've just got no context for the movie, and Serenity doesn't work as a standalone movie. There's just too much you won't understand. So watch 'Firefly', and then rewatch 'Serenity'.

Having said that, I think Firefly was better than Serenity. The effects were better in the TV series (they over-egged them a bit in Serenity) - things like space actually being silent, which it wasn't in Serenity, and the ship was better in Firefly compared to Serenity.

The one thing I like about Firefly is looking for all the airliner parts :-) In Ariel, you see them salvaging bits from the scrap yard, and there's entire scrapped Boeing 737 (or possibly a B727, they both have very similar front ends) cockpits and other parts of airliners quite clearly recognisable. The interior of the shuttles (I'll have to watch it again to be sure, but I think Inara's shuttle has a more or less complete throttle quadrant from a Boeing 737) and things like the control yoke on Serenity itself are all parts from airliners.

I actually waited until I watched the series before I saw Serenity. I missed it in the cinema, but fuck it! I enjoyed it more as a result. :)

Do agree with that, after hearing all the hype and that i was really looking forward to it but overall thought it was pretty poor. Got Firefly to watch now which i hope will be better but after hearing all the praise for Serenity (Got voted top sci fi film in a recent poll !) i thought it was very disappointing. Watchable and 'alright' but not stunning

Like all Joss' stuff, the character interaction is a huge part of the story. Just watching the film takes most of the dialog out of context. Spoils it for the film if that's all you've seen but finishes the series really well.

Paul, EVERYBODY KNOWS that you're meant to watch Serenity AFTER Firefly.

Serenity by itself makes no sense! Firefly is great and Serenity is a class ending to it.
