DVD extras

edited March 2006 in Chit chat
(Hmmm, that could be a rock band name... )

Does anyone else here like the extras which are often included on DVDs?

I quite like to watch a movie with the Director's Commentary instead of the regular soundtrack; it often gives interesting facts that I wouldn't otherwise know (such as, in Austin Powers:? International Man of Mystery, the facts that the opening sequence is blatantly copied from A Hard Day's Night, or that the Sphynx cat they used for the 1990s part was called Ted Nude-gent) :D or it points out things I would otherwise have missed, such as the Justin Timberlake poster in one scene of Shrek 2 or the fact that, in the Austin Powers movie just mentioned, in the scene where the guy was shot down the trapdoor but survived the cat (throughour that scene) looked where the trapdoor would have been if it had really been there. :)

Yes the 'Concert for Bangladesh' had a 30 minute documentary on the rehearsals which was well-good. It was shown on the BBC so not as exclusive as it might have been.

I noticed from his Microsoft blog that Andy Pennell has moved from managing C++, C# debuggers into HD-DVD the new emerging DVD format which promises extras.

He has now been at Microsoft for ten years and did not have a PC when he started - a Sinclair machine certainly. He wrote for the Spectrum and QL.

Elsewhere I saw that the late shipping of Vista was causing disquiet today at Redmond with one MS blogger stating "It?s pathetic. Being a 10+ year vet, I feel ashamed and sad. This company is a mess on so many levels.?

I watched all the Lord of the Rings extras. Lots of interesting programmes on how they made everything for the films. Well worth watching if you enjoyed the trilogy.

For some of your favourite films the extras can be very good but on many films i'm not really that bothered or dont have the time to watch them.

I love the Shining so seeing a short documentary on that on the disc was excellent but apart from a few big name films i try to buy the bog standard dvd releases. Again seeing the Star Wars deleted scenes are good but other deleted scenes for other films are normally quite poor as most seem to be deleted as theyre quite terrible !

For myself i cant sit through 2 hours of directors commentary either, half the time they seem bored as anything.

The Evil Dead Commentaries are top comedy listening.

The Airplane "Don't call me Shirley" edition (R1) is also good stuff.

Firefly and Serenity is good also.

And who can argue that the Star Wars DVD's have the best extras crammed into them?

when i get a dvd i'm not too fussed on extras, but i do recommend are the Spinal Tap deleted scenes, they're shown all in one go and add up to over an hour, it's like watching a brand new film! :D

the directors commentarys from the two desert films set in egypt are pretty funny, better than the movies themselves, unfortunatly i cant remeber them, and cant be arsed looking on IMDB.

they had rachel weiss in them.

edit *have been reliably informed that they are called Mummy and Mummy two.*

ive started adding my collection to it

the only problem ive found is........its american :p
and so to accept "foreign" ie:- uk films to the database you NEED to add a cover picture, i did 8 films, took ages and they didnt accept em cos there wasnt a picture.....even tho i gave the official website of one that has the picture
