Silent Hill - This Weekend

edited September 2006 in Chit chat
The movie version of the excellent Silent Hill game series is coming to our cinemas this weekend and from what I've seen of it so far, it looks really good, and appears to have the unnerving feel of the games down perfectly.

Excellent cast too - Radha Mitchell, Sean Bean & Laurie Holden.

Who's going to see it?

Necros.

We're going to see it on monday. If it wasn't for a doctor's appointment friday afternoon we'd be going then - we never go at night or weekends, far too busy and full of neds/annoying runts.

Can't wait. It's a 2 hour film, so hopefully it's got a real good chunk of plot in it (from SH1 and 2 - Pyramid Head *will* be in it).
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

Hey yeah!! I just saw an advert for it on TV a few minutes ago.

It's one I've GOT to see. I've loved the atmosphere of the games.

Though when I watched the film HOSTEL, which I downloaded the other day, I thought a lot of the imagery was very 'Silent Hill' too...

It would be cool if Sonic Youth allowed one of their songs to be used during the film, since the original game contains a reference to the band. :)

Maybe Mote or Disappearer from their album Goo. The lyrics have a strange other-worldly feel to them. They would be perfect. :)

I'm always sceptical of movies made from games as most turn out to be a disappointment, but I must admit this one holds my interests.

I think if it's released as a 15 that will be it, it'll be shite. basically because most horror flicks released as 15 cert are cacka anyway (don't get me wrong there are some that are OK).

Anyway I think if you gave Sean Bean a curtain hairdo he'd actually look a little like that James fella out of Silent hill 2. Having only watched my friend playing it (a long time ago), I can't really remember much of it, and not owning a PS2 I can't buy it (even though I should imagine it would be pennies by now).

However I loved the first Silent hill so much I have 2 copies of it, and I've played it to death. I've even got the alien death ray gun, which is crap until you complete it a few more times on hard, then the beam upgrades and you get a bit more power to it. Never runs out of ammo either. In fact I'm gonna play it today again if I have time.

I didn't know there was a film of Silent Hill coming out.

I've just watched the trailer online. I must say that the settings / scenery and characters looked very much like the game. If they can manage to get the same level of creepiness it could be worth watching. I never have much faith in these Hollywood versions of computer games though..

The atmosphere in the game was amazing, lets hope the film stays true to the game... Unlike films like 'Alone in the dark' which was completely horseshit.. The game was brilliant and could have made a great film.

A couple of things you should know...

The SH team were heavily involved in the film. They've been trying to get a film done the way they want it since about '99/00.

Akira Yamaoka is actually doing the music for the film!

A 15 rated horror film isn't a bad thing. I mean, how much actual blood, guts and gore do you see in the SH games? Not much compared to others. SH is more a psychological horror that a gore-fest.

    Cue plot lines and darkness...

Yamaoka is an absolute genius. I have the soundtrack CDs for SH2 & 3 and they're amazing. I will get the other two eventually. I haven't gotten around to it yet.

I wonder if they'll have little UFOs flying around in the distance as an in-joke? :)

    Well,

In a development that doesn't surprise me one bit, the local cinema isn't showing it. It will probably arrive eventually but I'm not going to see it on the opening day now. I imagine that if it was the latest "blockbuster" starring The Rock or Vin Diesel, the company that owns the cinema would make sure that they had it immediately.

Can you all do me a favour? When you do get to see it, can you mark spoilers clearly as I don't want the film ruined on me. Thanks. :)

I would have been very surprised if Silent Hill had been shown on time. Oh well.

    Saw it this afternoon -

The games ( well, 1st 2 at any rate ) did nothing for me, however the film is GREAT. If you like trashy horror films, you will love it. Good story, good characters, great special effects too. Will be getting the dvd when it comes out. Nice twist too.

I thought it was utter gash. I like a good, cheap horror film as much as anyone but this was as generic and dated as they come.

Initially it had a good, creepy atmosphere but nearly all of the scary bits looked like flimsy special fx so that ruined it, especially as every effect seemed to be the sort you get in every horror film/marilyn manson video these days.

That lead actress was quite good though (the kid was crap though).

I watched it last night. It wasn't too bad - Your typical hollywood horror. Nice effects etc. It started quite well, the arrival at Silent Hill was identical to the game - even the camera angles, but it quickly went down hill.
I think fans of the game will like it as the scenery and visuals are pretty good. I didnt get very far on the game so I dont know how the film relates to what happens in the game. I'm gonna play it this week and see.

The acting wasnt too bad for a horror film to be honest and Im glad they didnt spoil it with over the top thrash music thumping throughout it (just like resident evil - which was utter bollox). I think it could have been far better though - there should have been more emphasis on suspense / terror / isolation etc to get the audience a bit more uncomfortable. Shame really - it could have been a top film

    Id give it a 6/10.

Play the game and your rating of the film might drop.

Dahlia is different in the game, but the reasoning in the film might make sense if there's a direct sequel, then Dahlia could be like she is in the game.

Still, with all the wrongs in the film I absolutely loved it. I'll more than likely go see it again. Just a shame they had all that gore in it at the end. There wasn't really a need for that, and SH has never been about gore.

I bought the DVD this afternoon and I've just finished watching it. My verdict - it's very good although it could have been a lot better. Didn't like the way they changed Dahlia's character though, although Christabelle more than made up for it. She was really good in the part. The atmosphere was spot on, especially in the first 30 minutes, which are identical to the game.

Oh, and Pyramid Head was brilliant. I loved the scene where the stripped the young girl naked and then ripped her skin off. Excellent!!!

I watched it a couple of weeks back on dvd and had to turn it off after about 30-40 minutes because it was so bad.
Maybe it's a film where you have to have played the game to enjoy the film!
