When I had my first PC around 99 I didn`t know wtf I was doing when it came to structure or organising where to put things (and I never used Windows My Music, My Pics etc folders)... anyway, within three years my computer was an absolute mess, I had my own folders literally all over the shop, I knew where they were (well most of it) but had certain emulators, games, music all over.

Point being anyways, that it took a good mate who I met to teach me to have emulators, games, utils etc folders in root of C, just for tidyness... i always put stuff where it should be now, and nothing goes into Program files `cept stuff I trust like mozilla etc.

It`s lazy for coders to expect stuff to be in Program Files, must agree with you there Lee :)

(Oh, and AY, you didn`t say what basic *_+ I was interested :) I had been trying to run the game from my desktop by the way, just to test it (a habit) and I`d also stripped out the final folder from the unnecesary three folders deep you had in the zip... not having a go but thats also bad practice)

This may sound odd but I enjoy programming. Right now it looks like it's about to rain, but since I hardly ever go outdoors that's not a problem for me.

just had a funny thought when I read this... wouldn`t it be completely whack if AY turned out to be me.... laughing my ass off :) lol times a million

Firstly, the folder depth is because the game has a folder structure of Art, Data, Help & so on.
Secondly, it wasn't laziness, just that I was having difficulty implementing the COMMAND function (will be fixed in beta build 1.3).
Thirdly, I am using FIRSTBASIC by PowerBASIC Inc, Silicon Valley, California.
I don't know whether the company still exists.

Ha ha my fault for messing up my edit - Richard Maxwell - ahem ! Sure i had typed Branson, brains gone today !
  • Well as a matter of fact, I seem to have quoted you before you editted it.
It does appear to say Branson in your post now.

don`t worry, I had the full game with structure intact (art etc inc), I`d just stripped it out of the two folders that had the final game folder in as they contained nothing but that :)

also I sent that post before your reply to Lee about not being easy to do to allow the game to be placed anywhere... if you are searching through those two uneeded folders for files then I seriously recommend knocking out a new version with just the final folder... it`s not nice having things needlessy buried deep.

good look with the coding, wish I`d started when I was 14, keep it up and perhaps one day you you can program an advanced girlfriend simulator like on Weird Science.. hehe , soz, couldn`t resist.
  • There is a reason why it is ecse/harris/
ECSE is the old name. Most of my programs install to c:/progra~1/ecse/ + whatever the name of the program is/
So if you have, say, Harris and EOTW (which is coming soon), they are not both in the same folder. The depth of folder looks a bit ludicrous when you only have one ECSE title, but with 8 program folders (that's how many are on my machine, including all sorts of development projects) it helps that they are kept separate.

[edit]Oh by the way, can someone do a review of some sort soon? I would like to make a reviews section on my website. Also, the exception to the above folder structure is the screensavers - they are meant to go in C:/ScreenSavers/ although this will be changed in later versions (finally got the hang of the COMMAND function) and it only really matters for Kaleidoscope, which has a Config file and program.[/edit]

Or Richard Griffiths, unless you've got a curious and worrying obsession with the carrot. :)

    Necros.

i never watched pie in the sky.
  • At the ZX Cornah there is some of my specstuf as a .zip

Also, go to my AY Music subpage for some stuff I made with SoundTracker.

I am afraid some of the links do not work as some of the files were too big. I will fix the page soon.

cool, i will have a butchers when i get a mo.
  • OK - I have fixed the music.htm page now - unfortunately Chordite and Seek Relief are huge even when zipped, so they will have to wait a month or so and then I will rotate. Anyway, sure, butcher away!

oh wait i can't listen to music on my computer, never mind.
  • Why's that then? No speakers? No sound card? Or just work computer block things?
  • edited August 2006
I gave that specstuff zip a whirl. The stuff on there is alright, it kept me
busy for a while anyway. :)

How do I get those PIC files to work? Don't mind me if that's a stupid
question, I just dunno much about +3 disks.

I also listened to Dejection/Rejection. It's pretty weird and did sound a bit
odd in places but I quite liked it.
  • Glad you liked the stuff - Dejection/Rejection is a bit odd in places. Handshakes is probably the best, and UNFLIMBOB is good too. Try them.

As for the .PIC files, they open in PBRUSH. Sorry about the lack of instructions anywhere. Press 'l' (I think) in PBRUSH and you get a load thingy. I should really upload PBR Mk V - developed a long way, it's what I use for my CGC loading screens and it can create flash, bright, and has 4 draw modes - SEL, INV, OVR and MOV. I will upload it soon.

The .PIC thing is nothing to do with it being a +3 disk, but FYI they are SCREEN$-type saves.

yeah it's my work computer. no sound card, no speakers. the work block isn't too bad here though.

my comp at home is broke, and it has been from quite some time. downloaded the files though and have it on my list of things to do when im up and running again. (hey hey 16k is also on the list!!!)

Thanks for that AY. Got those pics working in PBRUSH no problem.
I also tried those other two tunes you recomended, they're pretty cool.
Quite cheery aren't they? Certainly worth taking a bit of time to listen to them.
  • I just made this Fx banner. Click File->Save Page As to actually be able to see it (browsers don't seem to support .TIF files unfortunately)
  • The alphasoft website is undergoing some down-time.
However, you can still download HARRIS Beta Build 1.3.

It can now be installed anywhere, and has a proper installer.

    I don't know about these Maxwell/Branson/etc people, but I have a beard.

Well, the beginnings of one. It's not very thick. It's mostly just slightly fuzzy.

You didn't really need to know that, but I'm bored.
