What are you playing now?

edited May 2005 in Games
A bit off topic for this forum perhaps, but I'm curious about what games people are playing now. Platform does not matter.

It's crazy, I have lots and lots of work to do, but for the last week I'm totally addicted to Chrono Cross on Playstation.

And yes, I have tons of work to do too!

QuakeWorld (PC) - I'm not just playing it now, I've always played it, and I always will!
    StarCraft (PC)
    Burger Time (Mame)
    Space Harrier (Mame)
    Ice Climber (NES)
    Auf Wiedersehen Monty (Speccy)
    Fire and Ice (Amiga)
    WizKid (Amiga)

Apart from these, there are hundreds of games I love and play every once in a while, but I've discovered that it's better to concentrate on a few games instead of spending 5 minutes on a large amount of games. When I grow weary of one of the above mentioned, I'm planning on giving Captive (Amiga), Spellbound (Speccy), R-Type 2 (Mame) and a few others a go.

So many games... so little time.

    Javier:
Flying shark works 100% perfectly with Mame. Just download the latest Mame-version. If it still doesn't work, you probably have a bad romset.

R-Type 1 and 2 on the rage emulator
3d Ant Attack on the speccy emulator icon_smile.gif

Ant Attack looks nice, but those keys put me off. It could have been so much more user-friendly. Maybe an emulator will be released with special support for it so that you can use a multi-button joypad to control it without keys.

Spector: check out my posting to Neil P's "Redefinable Joystick?" thread (http://www.worldofspectrum.org/phorum/read.php?f=1&i=3704&t=3704). I was a bit late posting to that one, and you may have missed it. My post directs you to a hacked snapshot of Ant Attack with ... wait for it ... directional keys!

His remake (95% done) is well worth a download, too.

Very useful Ed, thanks, I'll give it a go.

I've been playing an obscure Speccy game from 1983 called "Manic Miner". I've just completed it for the first time. I thought games like these would be a lot easier, but this really is quite a tricky one. Anyone else find Manic Miner tough?

    Paul van der Laan:
You shouldn't look at the statistics so gloomily. My own interpretation of the statistics is that Spectrum owners are broad minded creatures that have acknowledged that there are good games for different platforms as well. Can the same thing be said about the NES/SNES/Sega-communities?

And besides, the statistics doesn't say anything about how much time we spend with each system. Not to mention that there are only about 4000 or so Spectrum titles, which must then be compared to the amount of titles available for _all_ of the other systems. Looking at it that way, we are all obviously biased towards the Spectrum! icon_smile.gif

Well said Lars, the great thing about emulation is that you also get to play on many systems that you never owned as i nipper. I always wanted a PC engine and a Neo Geo but never owned them hence i've spent quite some time playing various games on formats other than those that i once owned. Don't worry Paul, we all love the Speccy on here !!
Due to the amount of games now available on various formats i find it very difficult to get really 'into' any one game and tend to just play loads, all for a short period of time. It was slightly different when i was little and had forked out a massive ?7.99 on a new game. I felt inclined to play it for weeks on end until i had completed it, nowdays i usually just play each game for the odd 10 minutes or so.

Guys, I wasn't that serious about the statistics! I just wanted to give a brief, visual summary of the thread. If you can draw any conclusion from it, it is that we're quite into retro gaming. (But you could predict that beforehand of course, duh...)

I play 3 games mainly, when i'm not at work or on the net, so usually between 2am and 5am!! (I also need to sleep)

    Gran Turismo 3......PS2
    Burnout.......PS2
    Gran Theft Auto 3......PS2

GTA3 reminds me of Turbo Esprit by Durrell on the Speccy, amazing how far games have come, what will we be playing in another 10 years?

Have got a Zipped file of Turbo Esprit, and the Emulator 'Gleck', but haven't got a clue how to load a TZX file. Can anyone help?
  • edited February 2002
I got a PS2 last friday,.. I got also precisely tje same three games you say Keith,.. GranTurismo3 looks great, BurnOut.. hmm not much good.. but GrandTheftAuto3 its superb. I loved Driver,,,, both games Driver and GTA3 reminded me TurboEsprit from Durell..

Im really gladed becoz TurboEsprit had exactly the same spirit of that megagames.. also I remember TranzAm as a similar game.

Really speccy games are a cool reference to game developers and designers.

    Brian Lara's Cricket (PS)

And yes, to answer a previous question, Manic Miner is hard. I seem to remember there being a prize for the first person to complete it, wasn't there?

I don't play games all that much - usually a quick game of Freecell or Spider Solitaire is as complicated as it gets. But there are a handful of games that I turn to in a moment of need:

    Chaos (Spectrum)
Chuckie Egg (Spectrum, or PC remake)
    Worms 2 (PC)
    Micro Machines v3 (PC)

Every one of them a beaut!
