I discarded (if it's the right verb) Ace, because I don't like simulations, then between Mask III and Strangeloop I chose the latter because it has good reviews and I already know Mask - which is a good platform-shooter with coloured and detailed graphics and different weapons and devices to use:
but we played Light Force last time, so now I'm lookin' for something more obscure.
ACE 2 isn't much of a simulation. Then again, that's probably a good thing as I don't think you'd get much joy for a 2 player version of Fighter Pilot sharing a single Spectrum keyboard. That said, it's not much of a shoot 'em up either.
MASK III is OK, but no more. It's basically a production line Exolon clone that was put out to milk the last dregs from a license deal.
So, it's got to be Strangeloop. It's a huge game that still managed to retain plenty of variety despite having a lot of rooms. I never quite managed to get around to finishing it, but found loads of cool stuff in various places.
Right then, I've decided to go for Strangeloop, despite Mask III sounding rather groovy. I Imagine Ace to be a bit like that rather sloppy Red Arrows game, and I wouldn't fancy playing that for a week!
Anyway, for anyone just starting out, the first thing to do is to find the jet bike as walking around is hard going in the low gravity. Go right from the first screen, down and right again. Shoot the thingy that drops bombs on you and the bike will descend.
You can go in the reactor room, but make sure you collect the shades from the rop right room first. You can actually see what's about to horribly kill you then.

It does look incredibly shodding - "playable crash" is an excellent description. And, as someone pointed out, the collision detection is terrible, especially with regard to those green "acid bath" things. Grr.
However, it manages to be playable thanks to an undeniable surreal charm and overall feeling of oddness. I used to find this game a bit creepy when I was a kid and now, at the grand old age of 29, I can still see why.

Strangeloop lives up to its name: utterly bizarre game.
That collision detection is evil. :-o

The game is REALLY tough, though. I'll keep going with it!!
Does anyone else want to take this over? I will continue to make the threads sticky as they are created...
Go on then
