I have an album Machine Head by Deep Purple. It is my property. Now if any of you (and especially mell the bell) will try to gain a copy of that album, I will take legal action.
I've been away for the best part of today, and have just become aware of this thread...
OK... Davey has won an ebay auction for a tape which is currently STP. I've approached the seller and asked them if they were prepared to make a tape to tape copy for me, so that the title in question could be preserved.. As it turns out, the tape wasn't copied for me as the seller didn't have the means to do so....
I haven't in any way interfered with the original tape and was not going to be in control or possession of the original at any stage...
I think the only question mark would be over the copyright of the title, which is currently owner by Kobrahsoft for which WOS has no contact details... I've always adhered to the wishes of copyright holders, which Martijn can vouch for. If anyone knows different and would like to enlighten me, I'm all ears.
What does irk me a little, is that you're quite happy to use Infoseek and enjoy everything else WOS has to offer Davey, but you flatly refuse to help improve the archive even though you're in a prime position to do so.
Rest assured however Davey, I won't be approaching anyone else who you've won items from...
Surely he was only attempting to get a copy of the data on the tape; not the tape itself. The media belongs to Mr Davey, but surely the data is actually owned by the copyright holder...?
On a side note, can someone please explain to me cornishdavey's motivation for refusing to co-operate with the preservation team? Not trying to take a dig or anything (at the moment) - I just genuinely want to understand. Is it really just greed - the collection is worth more if it's MIA?
Nice to see he's still using the same PR company as Paul McKenna...
I hate to say it, but I'm kinda on the side of CornishDavey with this one. If I won an auction on ebay (for, say, an album) I'd be rather p'd off if someone contacted the seller to request a copy of it. If they'd wanted it that badly they'd have outbid me... why should I pay for it and then someone else gets a copy of it for nothing?
If I had won the auction for an MIA tape I would offer it up to the Tape Preservation team as a matter of courtesy (and to further "the cause")... do you know that CornishDavey wasn't going to do this? Or did you ask him if he would kindly provide a copy of the tape to the STP?

You have a point there. But...

Davey's stance on this is well known. The Vault isn't going to get any help from him if I'm not mistaken. :)
@Icabod
I don't have unlimited funds... I've shelled out hundreds of pounds in the last couple of months in petrol and hotel stopovers in Newmarket, Coventry and York to collect both originals and "copies" for preservation purposes...
I wish I could go for everything on ebay, but I can't.. If anyone wishes to donate etc, believe me it'll go to good use...
And yes, we're not going to get any help from Davey.

While I agree with what you're saying, and it's why I gave the example that if I won an MIA tape on ebay I'd donate it (even if just a .WAV) to the preservation team... what you did is still out of order in my opinion.
It's a shame that Davey won't help with the preservation, and as he obviously has at least one MIA tape I wish he would help. But that's his choice... maybe with friendly persuasion he would change his mind. Tho' after this thread, that's unlikely.
I'm puzzled as to what charge CornishTwat could take Gilby to court on. Isn't possession nine-tenths of the law, and if it's not in CT's hands, then it's not under CT's control?

This is a trust issue, not a legal one.
When you buy something off ebay, and pay with PayPal, isn't the item then legally yours? Even if it's not in your hands yet?
i understand the problem and the anger it might have caused, but it wasn't like steve was trying to get a copy for personal or financial gain. his intentions seem to be for good.
to quote indiana jones 'this belongs in a museum.'
I do agree that he might have asked dave for a copy first, and i cant assume what the answer would be. but from my impression on another thread i dont think the answer would have been a yes. (i think steve new this)
Cos he thinks it makes him look good or something ? Don`t think their was any need for it, I`m not convinced Steve did anything wrong, surely `til the tape is paid for AND in Davey`s posession then the seller can do wtf he likes.
How many people in the past have copied something anyway before ebay`ing it.
Well I for one think this thread should be locked and/or deleted. I have been in contact with a moderator regarding this, and the only reason I'm bothering to mention it is that I believe in telling people straight if they p*ss me off. That's what I'm doing here, telling you guys straight - I've not snuck off to a mod behind your backs.
A public slagging off is very counter-productive. Solves nothing and creates nothing but bad feelings etc. Where the hell is that certain level of intellect shown by all on here usually? There are racist, insulting and abusive comments being thrown around here, which have no place on WoSF. It's all so very childish, petty and just plain nasty, I just can't believe the mods are letting it continue. I know why it's continuing, but I just don't believe that here. on WoSF, this sh*t is happening. Shame on you for standing in judgement over something that's NOTHING to do with you and lowering yourselves to childish name calling.
Martijn, are you really going to let this continue? On the birthday of WoS?
Just my opinion, flame away if you feel like it, IJDGAF.

I'm sure any gripes with Steve can be dealt with outside of a forum.
I've gained lots of peoples property over the years without suffering legal action. Buying houses, cars, stuff off ebay...etc.

I'm sure he'd be giving Gamestation a run for his money by now if he were.
The only thing i use a lot on WOS is infoseek, and as with everything i do, im prepared to pay for it. And have said so on many occasions.
I guess if that winds you up, you could stop using infoseek?
Dave,
You can donate to the preservation cause (or for the use of Infoseek) here:

Give generously!
