The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

edited March 2007 in Chit chat
After playing this for a few days now, I must say I love this game! I've clocked up nearly nine hours of game time, and I've only just got the customary green tunic, and am about to enter the first dungeon. About a third of that time was taking time out to explore around and do stuff like fishing.

The control system is great, and doesn't take much time to get used to. You don't need to make great swinging movements, just a flick of the wrist and Link slices his sword. You can do new stuff such as run and use the sword at the same time.

The spin attack is a doddle on the Wii - just flick the nunchuk. A couple of seconds later the sword is charged up again. I now mainly use the spin attack when fighting the Twilight scum.

The puzzles are at about the right difficulty level, a bit of logical thinking will see you through in the end. Although I nearly had to resort to Google a couple of times.

Stuff like playing a tune through a blade of grass to summon your horse or the eagle is just inspired. In the Twilight realm Link changes into a wolf and can do stuff such as talk to animals and listen to the trapped spirits from the normal world

Graphics wise it's great, even if the game is basically imported from the GameCube (TP was a GC only game until fairly late in its development). Your home village, Ordon, and the surrounding woods are depicted nicely.

If you're a Zelda fan I'd definitely reccommend TP.

Seconded. I've got a bit futher than yourself as I'm halfway through the first dungeon (just beat the mid-level Boss) and I've got to say that even at this early stage the level design is just sooooo much better than Wind Wakers. I didn't think WW had many "cool" bits compared to previous Zelda's but TP certainly has had loads already.

Some in particular are the guy in your home town who protects his pregnant wife from you in wolf-form, fishing, goat-herding, controlling Link-Wolfs howling pitch, and the monkeys in the Forest level.

The controller also takes about 10 minutes to get used to. THAT has really surprised me, I've had 20 years give or take of joypads/joysticks and was really worried that I would not get the hang of something so physical. It feels like I've been playing it for years after only a few days.

Daren, don't Google for the hints, simply go to www.gamefaqs.com.

I've ordered it on the cube, beacuse I don't want to be flapping my limbs about whist playing it, I want to be vegging out on a sofa and using a wavebird controller.

And besides, the cube version hasn't been mucked about with like the Wii version, which has been completely flipped and is a mirror of the cube version all because they shoehorned the Wii controls into it near the end of development.

I too play it vegging out on the sofa, it's how it should be played :-) You don't have to flap you limbs about to play it. Most of the time both controllers are resting on my lap, even when fighting. I just flick the nunchuk or remote to use the sword. Z- targettting sometimes means turning the remote so it points at the screen, but that's no hassle. I'm beginning to prefer this control method for Zelda, for the reasons mentioned above (easy to execute spin attacks and doing two things at once).

One advantage the GC version will have, however, is the variable camera angle. There's no equivalent of the yellow control stick so there's only the first-person view in addition to the usual one.

Yeah, I'm reallying enjoying Zelda, completed the first dungeon and brought the light back to Kariko village, still haven't opened Monkeyball. Although I adjusted to the Wii controllers, they don't seem as responsive as a gamepad.

I have to say though that on my LCD tv, the composite TV output of the Wii is pretty crap, colours are dull and you staight lines look wavy. Although I've read that it's not so bad on a CRT TV. I would have bought the component output leads, but my Xbox360 uses those on my TV so will just have to put up with it.

I'm about to confront the boss in the third dungeon. Total playing time so far is 45 hours. As you can guess, I'm not rushing through the main quest. I'm taking time out to explore, collect heart pieces and golden bugs and go fishing (both float and lure fishing). I love this game, it's great.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I don't get wavy lines but the colours look a bit dull and the graphics are ever-so-slightly blurred. I'm awaiting my component cable from Ebay. Have a look at this site, it gives some comparison screenshots of Twilight Princess with the component and normal cables:

I've just got my component cable and the difference is pretty amazing. Zelda looks completely different; sharp, crisp colours and the slight blurriness has gone. I'm in half a mind to start over, but I think I'll stick it out as I've done quite a bit.

Wii sports has improved too, the graphics are crisp and clear. Stuff like the grass on tennis and golf is more detailed.

Nintendo should ship this cable with the Wii, as well as the composite one. More and more people have these types of telly now.

I just bought the official nintendo component lead. Now maybe it's my Samsung HDTV, but I wasn't that impressed with the screen output. Yes it's slighly less fuzzy and the colours appear brighter, but things look more pixellated now (jaggies are very much more evident with the component output). Even the web browsing hasn't been improved that much. Oh and I still get wavy lines.

I may have a faulty Wii of course, since the Xbox 360 doesn't suffer from wavy lines when using it's component leads even when set to 480p

I fucking love this game. I'm on the final dungeon, with 109 hours of gameplay so far.

As you may guess, I'm not taking the direct route through TP, I'm taking time out to do side quests and stuff. I've got all the golden bugs, 18/20 heart containers and 51/60 poes.

Here's a list of some cool Easter Eggs in the game:

Bloody hell! I don't think I've even hit 9 hours yet, never mind 109! Mind you, I am hopelessly addicted to Excite Truck at the moment (not to mention the fact that my wife keeps screaming "No! You shan't take the precious!" when I tell her she's been playing TP for 7 hours straight and maybe needs to take a break).

I finished it last night :) I really enjoyed this one. Wind Waker got shit near the end (I hate having to re-do boss battles a second time before the last boss kicks my arse!) and Majoras Mask was too hard (still not got all the masks after all these years!). On the other hand, I found TP to be a bit easy on the whole. The final boss battle, while quite fun, was way too easy :( . The ending was great though :)

Just finished it tonight, clocked in 52 hours plus (in total). My Wii has been used for Zelda only for the last month. Great game, but would have to agree that the boss battles were a bit too easy, but what a journey....
