Darts

I know a few members here (not to mention the Site Administrator) are from the Netherlands and the Dutch and the British are the biggest darts fans in the world.

I was wondering what the reaction has been to the reigning champion and the would-be champion (van Gerwen) getting knocked out in the first round of the World Championships in Holland? I'm surprised Klaasen was knocked out after he was so brilliant last year, but Van Gerwen was looking for me like one of the greatest darts talents ever, and I was really looking forward to seeing what he could do. The BDO WC will now probably be a Martin Adams bore-a-thon with the two most exciting players now gone.

I suppose it's easy to take for you Dutch though with Barney winning in such style in the PDC :-) What a final that was, I'd rank it as one of the greatest finals of any sport I've seen in recent years. And it was played with such sportsmanship; Taylor was outstanding in the first three sets, but Barneveld showed such mental toughness to come back. Taylor knew he was defeated when he went 6-5 down, but kept plugging away and with the opening 180 in the final leg, he thought he had it. Barney deserved it though, a truly great champion, and just what darts needed.

I'll be quite honest, I thought Barenveld was a decent player in a poorer "league" when he was winning several BDO championships, but somewhat behind the best players of the PDC. But he has been a breath of fresh air since he swapped and has proved himself to be maybe the second greatest player ever with his performances.

I tried to get some tickets to the Premier League Darts at the Wolverhamnpton Civic last week but apparently it had been sold out only a few hours after the tickets went on sale. No way am I paying in the hundreds of pounds on eBay though. And they reckon it didn't deserve to be an Olympic sport? We can suffer hours of pointless crap like shooting, or sailing, that is no more a spectator sport than the Paint Drying championships. Get the Olympic Committee to watch this years PDC final, entertainment in spades!!!

Also, has anyone else played that new PDC game for the PC? It's a bit rough around the edges but it is the best darts game I've played since 180 on the Speccy!

I enjoy the darts too, though it's a shame about the BDO/PDC split, as it completely makes a mess of the world rankings!

I was a big fan of John Lowe throughout the 80's and 90's - I always used to support him, especially over Eric Bristow. He's a gentleman and a true sportsman.

Couldn't agree more. I wish they could bring them together as it's such a mess at the mo, although I would say the PDC has the better players. A World League is def in order. Van Gerwen has got such special ability, he fucked up today, but at 17 I can forgivre him that. He may ghive Taylor a serious match one day.

John Lowe was a magnificent player and he would have been up there with Taylor but for Bristow. Bristow was probably the better player, but he was a cocky twat (although a talented one).
