Must have dropped with some force, was he 30 clem or something
That reminds me;- I remember watching a programme once about the last hangman in Britain. He had a set of tables (like log tables, not those from Ikea), whereby, you had the Hangee's height on one axis and his weight on the other, the number at the cross section, was the length of the Rope. This ensured that enough speed was reached in the fall of the body to kill it instantly, but was not so quick as to pull his head off. From what I remember the body had to fall 5-6 foot, as it mentioned the people in western films only ever fell a couple of feet.
The people in western films didn't always die instantly either -- they looked to be asphyxiating to death a lot of the time.
What was the name of that short story about a fellow in the southern states that was hanged over a river, escaped when the rope broke, was chased a long way, felt a strong tiredness come on and then it turned out he didn't escape at all but was hanging to his death? Quite a good one. Funny how I can never find good short stories since leaving school. Even good books are rare.

quite interesting.
Ooh, I know this one! Now I can pretend to be all intellectual and literate.
An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, by Ambrose Bierce.
Ah, that is the one thanks. It's been a long, long time, more than 20 years, since I read that. I remember it being longer, probably because I usually did my homework 15 minutes before I left for school in the morning and was probably pressed for time.
Now that I have the attention of a literary intellectual :D, do you remember the name of a short story about an army of fire ants that ravaged farms while they swarmed? The protagonist defended his farm with a moat of burning oil, etc. I read the short story version but I think it was an adaptation from a full size novel. I'm really poor when it comes to remembering titles and names of authors.... this is a classic story that was likely written by a well known author that everyone probably knows about. Even though it was presented to a class of 12 year olds, I'd like to look it up and see if it's as good as I remember.
