Gilette Fusion and foam. Never tried an electric one.

I've got a Phillips electric (quite an expensive Xmas pressie), used it about three times as it's just shit. It's one of those that squirts some sort of balm as you shave. Result - loads of zits.

I always shave in the shower as it softens up the bristles nicely. Use the Gillette Gel (the one in a tube) and a Gillette M3P battery razor.

Superb results and to be honest I wouldn't use any other razor now (apart from maybe a Fusion). It's been hell to shave for the last three months with this huge scar across my neck and you'd think your neck being numb would make it easier/pleasanter to shave - it doesn't. The M3P glides across it though and makes it quick to do an unpleasant job!

I imagine not being able to see yourself in a mirror can make life tricky too.

This is followed by a vigourous massage/beating at the hands of the (male) hair dresser; I think there is a gap in the market for some Amazonian women here.

Aha! The infamous "khopdi maalish" (head massage). It's an art really and can be very invigorating, but if you're ticklish like me, you'll have an idiotic grin plastered over your face during the entire act!

I use a Mach 3 Turbo + Gillette Gel/Foam (though I prefer the gel) with hot water (helps get a smoother shave). A bit of Old Spice or Gillette after shave if I remember to.

Somebody once told me I should use an electric shaver if planning to shave the head (which I'm contemplating) or getting a hairless chest (*cough* I do hate hair poking out through clothes). Would anyone recommend using an electric shaver for these?

Nah, I used some hair clippers with no attachment to shave as much off as I could, then used a Gillette Fusion razor with the gel to shave it off. It was a doddle.

Just take your time and rinse the razor thoroughly between swipes.

oh I forgot to mention, you should only exfoliate once a week or so.
  • I wet shave once every week or so with cheap disposables, using really hot water (from the kettle) to dip the blade into. After it's dried I use an electric shaver to catch the odd bits of hair I've missed. Usually near mouth & nose, where there's a risk of cutting.

Finally got an electric shaver with a decent battery, only have to charge it about once a year.

The only problem is when growing it out, a day or two in, if you have hayfever or a cold and are constantly blowing your nose, you get bits of tissue stuck to your stubble. You never see that happening in films.
  • Real men don't shave - they bang on the stubble with a hammer and then bite them off from the inside. :)

  • Gillette Fusion or Mach 3 Turbo - I don't remember which one I'm currently using - along with Gillette Shaving Gel and a bit of water. I shave only twice a week though being the lazy git I am.

Blimey, I remember this thread from the first time around. I must have had a clear head around Mar 2007 as my youngest was born the month before so drinking was a no-goer. Normally I don't particularly remember threads I've posted in that well :-)

Aaaanyway. Still never got full feeling back into my neck but it's around 95% there so shaving ain't really a problem any longer. Moved onto a Gillette Fusion, still only shave in the shower, but don't use the gel anymore. It's now a badger brush with standard shaving soap. Fantastic results.

Like Arjun, I don't shave too often (maybe three times a week and as little as once sometimes). I'm a lazy bugger too...

Edit: Don't really use aftershave anymore either (unless I'm going out). Got some Gentleman's Pride Aftershave Lotion which is really great stuff. I had bad experiences with balms in the past (zits basically) so it's nice to be able to use one that works for me.

  • I've switched to using hair clippers with no guard. It gives a day old looking shave which is fine for me, I don't shave every day, probably 3 times a week at most. On special occasions I do apply a second coat, using a cheap disposable razor after a clipper shave. I'm Scottish, and my beard is basically copper wire, so I always clipper shave first - recommended for people who have to chew up their own face with a normal electric razor, or ruin disposable razors. The clippers don't affect my skin at all, really is like a day old shave and a god send when you're late for work.... like 2 minutes and your almost acceptably groomed.

Personally I find the most annoying thing about shaving is the next day, when about 6% of your beard grows faster than the rest of it, and you get these jaggy little hairs that itch... I skip that, I'd rather have a little stubble than that if I can help it.
  • I use a Gillette Fusion too but I have to be careful not to get the wrong blades - I have really sensitive skin combined with a really tough beard which means if I get the standard Gillette Fusion blades instead of the Proglide ones I end up with a face like one of zx1's pizzas.

  • Pretty much the same as years ago, still use an electric to pre-trim my face, if I'm having a shave. Been through about 4 sets of clippers since last time I posted here.

The Gillette aftershave gel that I mentioned didn't actually get used until about a year after I mentioned it, possibly longer, and I would say I ran out of it less than a year ago, but I may not have even ran out, the wife might have just threw it away? Or It may still be tucked away somewhere? :))

Although to be fair over the last 2 years I have let my facial fuzz get out of control a few times. I remember between October 2014, and may 2015, I didn't shave at all....Looked like a right scruffy sod.

    The trouble with tribbles is.......
  • Due to my Irish ancestry I have thick hair and a red mick face. Consequently two hours after shaving I get that Fred Flintstone shadow look. Gillette Blue 2 and Nivea shaving gel for me. Sometimes use a Nivea aftershave balm to put back some moisture. Real men moisturise. I think.
  • I use Gillette shaving soap. Foams up nicely for a foamy wet shave.

    Sod it!

  • Another Gillette Fusion here.

Started out using Gillette Blue II disposables.

Graduated to a Wilkinson Sword one with disposable blades, then a Gillette Sensor, then Mach III and now Fusion.

My parents got me an electric razor once, but it gave me a terrible rash, so I only used it a couple of times.

I'm not a fan of shaving, but I don't like having a beard either.. I usually shave every other day or so.

I have a friend who got a cut-throat razor and he says that it's the best thing he ever used. You have to keep sharpening it by stropping the blade on a leather strap though.. He says he does it while he's watching TV and he doesn't notice the time it takes.

Doesn't sound like something I could be bothered with personally.
  • I just use sandpaper !

I just can't get my head around this multi blade concept, the whole throwaway society that we live in is crazy. Some people say that even with these 3 blade razors that they get clogged up and you damage the blades by cleaning them. Also the heads cost a small fortune, that's why they often have special offers on the razor itself, selling it for a couple of pounds, then a box of heads costs £15 for three.

Hear, hear! I agree. I'm guilty of buying the expensive multi blades, but used them till they scraped. Now I'm a little beardy (shut it Boozey!), I only need to scrape around the neck so the current blades should last years.

  • Gillette Mach 3, and nothing else but the steam of the shower...
  • I've got a beard.
  • Aldi three blade razor for me £2.50 for the razor c/w three heads and another £2.50 gets six spare heads bargain!
  • I bought an Aldi razor for about £1 I also bought a shed load of blades for it, it must have lasted 2 years before I couldn't get any replacement blades. The blades were quick to clog up but you got about 3 days shave from each, perhaps I should get another from there, the replacement heads were just pennies and about 20 in a pack.

That could have been the five blade which was discontinued, as far as I know all stores stock the three blade.
  • I am not that modern, it was only a two blader
