Anyone used WinAPE before?

edited May 2007 in Chit chat
Erm ... sincerest apoligies all around ... yes, I'm trying to run a game (Death Pit) in WinAPE but the silly bugger who made the emulator doesn't make it quite apparent how to use it. All the author says is "type run"disc"" ... but that's where the problem arises ...

The first screen stares me in the face with either "f1 basic" or "f2 burning rubber"

If I press F1 on my keyboard then that is mapped as HELP ... and not actually f1 in the "menu" ... so ... how do I get into the
basic part to load the game?

I wonder why he/she doesn't support autoload ... oh, well.

Any help appreciated.

PS No, I'm not going to register at some CPC forum to ask them ... I shall not besmirch myself further ;-)

Hmm... don't remember too well but I believe you have to press 1 on the numeric keypad for F1 and 2 for F2. I think the Fx functions are mapped to the numeric keypad.

Hmmm, I wonder if that 100GBP reward is still up for grabs as per the start screen of this game :p

Auto loading on the CPC is a bit complex since there isn't a clearly defined way of identifying what file to run on disc (and tape images are rare as hens teeth). I seem to remember that it was on the cards as a possible future feature though.

    Use Caprice32 it's much better.

    If autorun fails

Type CAT to see whats on the disk

and then it's either Load"filename.bas or run filename.bas

There was a suggestion at one time to add an "autorun command" record to DSK files. I don't think it ever got anywhere.

Thanks for all the help you guys. I might try that other emu if I decide on getting more "games" ... I just wanted to try that Death (s)Pit one ... man, it's too easy to die in it ... garbage! but I just want to be able to go a few more screens ... and it's soo blocky! ... I guess it's finally coming to fruition what my mom used to say to me when I was younger "Don't spend so much time in front of the telly playing on that Speccy ... your eyes will become squares!"

OK ... w.t.p. am I doing wrong with WinAPE? ... I can't get my joystick to work even though it works fine outside of it (in SPIN, STEEM, Windoze etc).

I think I'll be DLing that other one recommended above.

GACHK! Caprice32 (v.3.6.1) is even worse ... unless I have no clue how to use it (which may very well be the case).

The "smallest" resolution is 640x400 ... I'd rather want it at whatever 100% is.

It runs at 22% while WinAPE was fine.

It does detect my joystick (at least in the settings) but doesn't work while in a game.

Help! The Speccy and its various horrendously well made and handcrafted emulators have spoiled me rotten!!!

It's all downhill from here I'm afraid! It'll start with a bit of weed to sooth the pain, then before you know it you're an alchoholic pothead. Then you start snorting coke, then jacking up heroin.....It's only a matter of time before you rob a gas station and then blow your own brains out with the same gun you buckwheated the clerk with.

......and all because winAPE is shit!!!

But seriously I had severe trouble with winAPE whilst trying out the CPC version of JSW about 3 years ago.......gave up on it after that as I wasn't really interested in the Amstrad.

That is 100%, the CPC's native resolution is 640*200 with double height pixels, so it's the lowest resolution that can display CPC images without cropping (excluding border/overscan)

I've never really got on with Caprice though, WinAPE generally works a lot better. I don't ever remember having joystick issues with it though I haven't used one in years.

That just shows how much I know about that bucket of bolts. WinAPE has the window smaller so that is what I was hoping for in Caprice.
