edited July 2007 in Chit chat
i did, i like it, not classic stuff like 1999, when doves cry, purple rain etc, but better than some of his later stuff
i'd give it 7 out of 10 i think.

whats peeps thoughts on giving a brand new album away in a newspaper too??

Well, seeing as I work in music distribution then I obviously consider it to be a worrying road to be going down. The concern is you start creating 'throwaway music' if you don't like it then just bin it cos you've bought the paper anyway...

Only just started l istening to it now (1 song in).

So far I like it. But then I'm a sucker for piano pieces (that are done well). I wasn't impressed with Musicology at all, but this is good.

Brave move. Interesting to see how it pans out. I see it as him getting back at the labels for being arseholes.

    --edit--
I'm liking the almost funky bass in Guitar :-D
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

    thats an interesting point

although is it really throwaway? they papers sold more than it would without prolly, most people will like it, some wont, the paper will have justified the cost?

the record shops and labels dont like the idea, the artist and customers do.
tbh i do think the labels / shops DO have to get with the program as times have changed, theres plenty of new innovations happening lately that say how we buy / recieve new music

On the news this evening they reckon around 2 million copies of the Mail On Sunday were sold. Not sure what the normal sales figures are but Prince only moved about 80,000 units of his last album and the Mail on Sunday paid him ?250,000. It has been said he's not worried about the money but he'd rather get his music out to as many people as possible so in that respect he's succeeded very well.
CD sales are declining rapidly and within 3 years will become a niche market if record companies don't come up with some good ideas to repackage music soon.

Do you listen to Tori Amos? She is a goddess on the piano. I love her music. She is my favorite of all time ever.

The thing is, Warner have shot themselves in the foot.

Okay so the CD is free with the paper today, but there are people out there who would probably prefer a jewel cased CD version of the album with booklet (if there will be one).

After today (or should that be yesterday?) there's no legal way of getting the album in the UK. That'll force people to torrents etc if they do want to see what the fuss is about.

As usual the label isn't looking at the long term, they're just throwing their toys out of the pram.

I heard that his record company wasn`t too pleased about it, although don`t know how he could have arranged it if they don`t have something to do with it.

Must admit though that I torrented it just as I missed the paper, and it`s unusual to get a new album from a paper, so I suppose that it`s giving people a glimpse into his work, who wouldn`t otherwise have gone and bought the album.

It sounds alright from the first couple of tracks I listened too.

Apparently the News of The World were giving away Purple Rain, to try and cash in.

Well I'm buying everything I can find on Ebay but I'm not gonna share it with anyone! But you could always ask the seller before I get it if you could have a copy ;) (joke).

Here's looking at you selfish Davy :)

I got it and quite liked it, it sounds like Joss Stone is on one of the tracks ?, and same as you Mel i would give it 7/10, as for the future of this sort of thing happening again, its bound to, now the papers know what sort of sales they can get, 2 million, if they add 50p to the price of the paper they could pay the artist 1 million, i wouldn't mind betting that George Micheal will be the next one to do it, i think i remember him saying he plans in the future to let people download his music from his website for free !!!

One thing i wish would stop is those cds they give away that have re-recorded hits on them, you get them expecteing to get the original hits and they are re-recordings by the original artist, what a waste o space .

I got it and thought it was rubbish! I expected something really good and was disappointed with it, I'm not really a big prince fan but I do like some of his stuff. I think he got the best deal with giving it away and getting paid by the paper. I also thought the sound/ mix was also very poor may be it was my copy of the CD.
