Paging Gary Lancaster

I just noticed that you'd posted and it jogged my memory, I sent you an e-mail while the forums were down, about the +3e.
Did it ever get through?
I've recently built the simple 8 bit interface detailed on your site to use with my +3e, and while everything is working, I wondered if there is a way to force detection of drives on boot (or if I have a fault somewhere) when I start up, I can only get it to pick up the drive if I start the spectrum, then turn the power to the drive on. If I reset the speccy it doesn't pick the drive up again unless I power down HD, reset speccy, power up hd. :s

Yeah. Sorry, I'm a bit behind on my emails...

The reason for the non-detection is that the +3e detects parameters which are only available after a drive reset. So, the drive has not properly reset in this case. You might find that holding the reset button in longer helps, or maybe the capacitor/resistor values on the interface ought to be changed (I am not an electronics expert, so can't really advise further on this).

The detection I have in ResiDOS is simpler, and works even if the drive hasn't been reset. I did port this over to the +3e at one point, but it got removed again whilst debugging a problem with CF cards on the 8-bit interface. I'll try reinstating this and send you a copy, although this may not be until my house move is completed.

Oh, and it's Garry, by the way ;-)

Do you use a marker pen on your second R when signing cheques? :-)

    whoops sorry about that
I don't know why I thought it was one r, I'm sure I read it like that somewhere...
anyway, as long as my interface is correct it's okay :-)
I want to glue it all up to stop the wires getting pulled. Experience has taught me to always check twice first before doing that :-)
