well I DO think that a lot of people have used hell as a threat, and people have followed the rules because they've been threatened with being burnt for eternity if they don't.

we obviously think different things. I agree that you can think what you want I know I certainly do :-)

I think Christianity had given us more good than bad over the last two thousand years. Look at the amazing religious works of art during the renaissance, for example. In fact just about all the truly great works of art in all fields in Europe are rooted in the Christian ideal. What great art have atheist countries like China, the USSR and North Korea produced?
Many have died in the name of religion, but many more have died in the name of Atheism. There wasn't too much religion in the dictatorships of the 20th Century. Have a look at this macabre Hit Parade from the last hundred years. Just for fun, see if you can count how many Atheists are in the Top 10.

I don't actually follow any of the revealed religions, so I'm not out to defend anybody in particular.

I want to know what excellent art was based on christianity?
I find all the biblical scenes and paintings of jesus etc boring and awkward looking. but then I've never learned what art I'm supposed to like, I just look at the pictures and decide which ones are pretty and which ones are ugly

Anyways ... then we also have the Great Wall of China ... The Forbidden City, Bejing, China ... the Terracotta Warriors in Xian, China ... erm ... I still like cheese though. And often architecture ... and it's raining and plenty of donner und blitzen right outiside.

yes! but that's the very problem isn't it. It's impossible to prove that it does not contain smarties that are invisible and impossible to touch. like gods

Yes, but if I told you that my empty (to your eyes and sense of touch) Smartie tube actually contained Smarties that were invisible and couldn't even be felt, would you believe me? Of course not, you'd think I was mad. Yet people will believe in an all powerful entity who is all around us but can't be seen/heard/touched or detected in any way, and that He is all powerful and all good, would you overlook the flaws in that argument* and believe me? Many people do just that. Insane.

    * Alright, so it's not really an argument, since no evidence is presented to support the "God exists" statement.

How is this a threat? Preachers may have presented it like that in the past, but I don't think it's a correct view. It's like 'falling to your death' is a consequence of 'jumping off a cliff will kill you'. Am I threatening you with death in saying that?

Well, more of a warning, really, but still stated as a fact, just like "Believe in my God and follow His rules or you'll go to Hell" is stated as an irrifutable fact to young schoolkids onwards.

I'm certainly not an expert at all, but as someone being treated for depression, I know that there is an awful lot that is known about the workings of the brain, and science can be used to change thought patterns etc.

How many people are cured of violent tendecies, for example? Or of epilepsy? You can cure any fault in a car, or a PC, or a house, or a TV etc (given either the the skill yourself or the the money to pay an expert), admittedly though these are man made, and so you'd expect them to be full understood. Or (far) more complicated things like surgery on the human body, which is still in early stages, but we understand far more about the skeleton or the internal organs that the workings of brain.
we don't know a lot about anything really. we don't know much about the moon, or what it's made of, there's a lot about the effects of propagation on broadcasting radio signals that we don't fully understand. and the depths of the oceans hold many many mysteries. as you say we'll learn it all eventually, all I'm saying is, science understands the brain pretty well actually. erm. so ner ;):D

Fair enough, I could be wrong, but I don't think I am. Perhaps someone on this forum could speak from a more experienced position.

Fuck me. I didn't realise homosexuality was a disease. How contagious is it? Are we talking Foot and Mouth contagious or Leprosy contagious?

Can I catch it from toilet seats? 'coz I had to take a dump at Blyth Services last Thursday and I've had a few bad nights sleep since then.

No but it is a chemical failing of the brain, somehow. Although politically correct morons will deny this. And many religious people blame homosexuality on the devil, which is just as bad.

I'm not so sure about that. What about the crusades and the inquisition? The conflicts between Catholics and Protestants and the associated persecutions? The spread of Christianity by missionaries to "heathen and ignorant" peoples and the associated damage done to their native cultures. Yes, OK, the people responsible had perverted the original teachings of Christ, but all of this was still done in the name of Christianity.

China was producing great works of art hundreds or even thousands of years before Christ was born. Granted, the formerly atheist regimes of the PRC and USSR produced little more than colourful propoganda posters, but that's not necessarily due to the atheist nature of these states. Great artists may have taken some inspiration from religion (or they were just paid to do so...) - but in the absence of religion they would have been inspired by other stuff.

But if Christianity hadn't have been around, another religion would have taken its place, inspiring great works of art and violence in equal measure. That's human nature for you.

That's the 20th Century... if you go back a few years more you'll find all sort of interesting things like the Crusades and the Inquisition...

Overall, I believe the general consensus is that more people have died in the name of god than any other. I'm sure I could back that up with a little research...
