Beautiful Young Minds

edited October 2007 in Chit chat
Did anybody watch the documentary on BBC2 last night - "Beautiful Young Minds" ? (i.e. Sunday 14th October 2007) ?

I just caught the last half hour because I had visitors, but it seemed like an interesting program.

I found the UK team leader's report on IMO 2006 here:

http://www.imo-register.org.uk/2006-report.html

He's actually pretty funny.

Has anybody got any idea when or where the program might be repeated? I've got a set-top digibox, so if anybody knows where I can get a digibox tv guide online that would be helpful.

Cheers!

    I saw the program;

One of the featured people (Jos?) I just wanted to slap.

Aspergers syndrome or not, it's no excuse for being an arrogant toss-pot!

I'm not sure if it will be repeated, but i'm sure that you'd be able to download it from uknova.com

I only saw about the first 10 minutes of it before my mum phoned (glad she didn't phone during Top Gear!). I then saw about the last 5 minutes

Definitely want to see it all sometime.

But yeah, that Jos is an arrogant bugger. Sioux watched it and said that he didn't get far and everybody else was happy because they didn't like him either.

Learning to write and speak Chinese in 3 months is pretty amazing.
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

Hey! It's not his fault! People with that have all sorts of problems! I'm one such person who has it and have problems of my own.

But people with it don't always have problems - some people have great intelligence.

i watched alien instead, it was the special edition with that special egg room scene put in.

so what was this program about, once i'd figured out it would be concentrating on the last word of the title rather than the first two we put the DVD on. was it on about super smart people who had social problems? or super socail people who could barley count? i'm the later.

    International Maths Olympiad.

Basically the world's best brains at maths get together and have a competition. Just happens that most are autistic or have asperger's.

Imagine boy scout camp with maths instead.

is it run by the 'count'

we had a an autistic kid at school, he wasn't no math genius, he could barely talk. he once pulled his pants down in assembely. he left before he finished school and died.

I'm not that good at maths (I got 60% in my last maths exam) and I couldn't talk until I was five. You should realise that people like us can't help the things we do although I never pulled down my pants.

I was the victim of major bullies at school because I was different. A lot of the staff gave me up as a hopeless cause and that I would never amount to anything.

Boy, did I give them a shock at the school reunion last year when I turned up with Amy, Emma and Hermione. The former bullies were surprised I was married to a drop dead gorgeous woman, the staff were surprised I had kids and they were even more surprised when I told them I had run a business and had been teaching! One fainted at the mention of me doing and getting an A-Level!

Even then (1986 - 1989) I was talented at computers although I had never used a Speccy at that point, they gave that up as hopeless and told me being good at computers won't get me a good job.

I didn't do anything wiht my pants at the reunion although one of the bullies who still hated my guts thought it would be funny to dish out a few wedgies to his former victims. He did it to the wrong person in front of Emma and she hit him in a certain area with her crutches (at that time, she was able to walk with teh aid of crutches). He didn't try that trick again. (no, I wasn't a victim) He even had the cheek to tell me to punish Emma severly and suggested I beat her with her own crutches. I told him I would punish her for it and seconds after he left teh area, I told her that her punishment was to laugh at him with me.

Mick - it was fair play! They decided I wouldn't amount to anything and from then on, I was determined to prove them wrong and I did.
