Look at the recent english managers track record.
Hoddle: Did quite well but couldn't keep his personal views to himself.
Keegan: Couldn't handle defeat, and stormed off in a hissy fit.
Venables: The one shining star amongst recent managers, unfortunately the FA couldn't accept his outside interests.
Taylor: The less said about him the better.
We need a strong man who's tactically aware and can motivate players.
A lot of names are already being touted. Sam Allardyce as mentioned by Daren, Alan Shearer's name has been raised and even Jose Mourinho. I've no problem with a manager with no previous experience, look at Germany with Jurgen Klinsmann or Marco Van Basten and Mark Hughes did very well for Wales. I've no problem with a foreign manager either, McClaren makes Sven look like a managerial god. Scorlari was tapped so the FA obviously aren't going to rule anyone out.
Names may come and go , we'll just have to wait and see. The FA meet Thursday morning at 8.30am to discuss, they need to make a quick decision as McClaren is due to go to South Africa on Friday for the World Cup draw on Sunday which could prove to be an embarassment for the FA.
Now the FA absolutely must sack him tomorrow morning.
If they don't it'll be a big mistake. I don't think they can go against the feeling of every fan in the country. "No excuses" is what Mclaren said yesterday.
I wonder whose going to be on the plane to South Africa though? It's totally up in the air at this stage!
Mind you Scotland are out and Norway well...losing at home to dodgy turks...
The players obviously have to blame themselves as well but at the end of the day it falls down to the manager. Thought Sven did a good job previously and never thought he should have got the boot. Specially when McLaren took over.
Hamilton will still have a McClaren tomorrow....
Considering it takes two teams to play a football match and only one turned up last night it was more of a default defeat rather than a real one.
what do you mean, what happened, has the england team been kidnapped by the manager? should i look on BBC news?
For an outside bet, another name that springs to mind is Harry Redknapp. I don't think there's anyone around who knows about and can motivate the players who are actually eligable to play for England than him. Even if he's not too likely to get the job, he'd still be pretty useful to have around the national side.
The majority of the Premiership's footballers aren't English. And as long as this continues, the players we can field are just not going to be good enough.
However because we have so many 'stars' they just dont seem to play well as a team, invidiually theyre excellent but together ? Hmmm. We really need a coach who can get the best out of these players as its alright saying on paper theyre all excellent but together they just cant seem to do it.
I do think theres enough english talent out there, injuries havent helped but just playing together, theyre piss poor. The scottish national side have been 'punching above their weight' but their manager really really helps them turn in great performances, the team seem to love playing for Scotland and the fans also really help.
Over here the media slates the team off every second, fans boo when David Bentley or Lampard get the ball and most of the millionaire footballers dont seem fussed half the time playing for England.
Its not as if English football disintergrated when foreigners started to arrive. England were not exactly worldbeaters in the 70s and 80s.
The foreigners playing in Italy don't seem to have done them much harm.
England has enough highly paid footballers getting first class football every week - far more than Croatia - to suggest that they should be able to turn out a decent team.
I think psj has hit the nail on the head. There are too many over-pampered stars and primadonnas in English football who don't have to care.
