Nintendo 64 Controllers

edited January 2008 in Chit chat
OK this is totally non-speccy related. But, hey it is the chit chat forum. Does anybody know if there is anywhere to get unused official N64 controllers (highly unlikely I know!)? That is from somewhere other than Ebay. If it is not possible I know there are lots of different fake controllers from other manufacturers available. Out of the fake ones does anybody know which ones are the best and the most like the original controllers? I have some fake ones already and although they do work they really do not feel that great to use.

Try junk shops, Book and Record outlets, Electronic traders, etc. If you're lucky you can still get many different games systems controllers still in the boxes and plastic.

But expect to be ripped off, they normally don't come cheap.

Hey Klepto, I notice you're in Idaho, USA. Have you tried Game Crazy (division of Hollywood Video) they have a bunch of console stuff available, sometimes in original packaging.

Thanks ZnorXman I will give that a try.

I would definately recommend you buy a Makopad 64 or a Superpad 64 - see the comprehensive review at:

    http://z9.invisionfree.com/Nintendo_64_Forever/index.php?showtopic=1008

for the Superpad 64 review, the black, two-pronged one, it's the top right hand joyapd in the first picture (which shows all six joypads reviewed). The Makopad 64 and the Superpad 64 are identical except that the Makopad 64 is transparent instead of grey, and has two cheats buttons (Slow and Auto, neither or which I ever use, does anyone?), and I've had mine for about seven years now (and it's been hammered, what with constant single and multiplayer sessions) and it's still just as responsive as it was when it was new (can anyone say that about the official controller?). Plus I really, really prefer it's layout, every button is accesible at any time, unlike the official controller.

Of course nowadays you probably won't be able to buy the Makopad 64 or the Superpad 64 from a shop, so ebay is probably your best bet, and remember that there is at least one more joypad for the N64 called the Superpad, so be careful not to buy the wrong one.

If you really want an original style one then the general consensus is that the official Nintendo one is still the best, rather than a third party one, but the review should help you decide.

For anywhere to buy the controllers, be it official, Makopad or whatever, try asking at:

the best N64 forum I know of, but you might still end up doing the rounds in local secondhand shops and ebay. Good luck!

I'd ask on one of the general retro collectors boards, there WILL be someone with one to swap here; (but the problem is some of them will only swap, and won't sell)

or try atari age, or rf generation

p.s being based in the USA is a plus for all 3 of those sites, as the majority of the membership also live there!

Wow, thanks guys for all the advice. I just love the N64 so much and I don't really want to play it using emulation as it is do fiddly.

Have you tried carving a N64 'stick out of a potato? Just wondering because you're in Idaho ;-)

Well, after building my house out of potatos last year (difficult, especially as potatos are generally more rounded than brick shaped) I kind of wanted a rest. Actually, if I did carve a controller out of a potato it would probably be more effective than some of the controllers I have now!

Jolly good show! I hear Montpelier will be launching its first potato-rocket in orbit this spring. Hearsay of course but I can see them trying it.

There are loads of "Sumo" N64 sticks on Ebay. I don't know what they are like though. I don't think they were mentioned in the reviews that were linked to.

I wouldn't expect them to be cheap if they're new/unused. I normally stick used ones up at about ?6 each, and they sell like hot cakes.

    ?6 is cheap.

I often just throw consoles in the bin, and sell the controllers seperate, did it with 2 megadrives this week.
