games you persevered with, even tho' they were cr*p

edited March 2008 in Games
I remember spending ages on 'Metal Drone' (http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekid.cgi?id=0003143),
and to be honest it's not a great game at all... I don't even know why I tried so hard with it...

Double Dragon! I perservered with it for 1 or 2 goes until I finished it. Most on here know where my sentiments towrds that game lie :D

Tomb of Syrinx, was an unwanted gift from my ma. She got me it and I played it more than it deserved just so I wouldn't seem ungrateful.

I'm sure there's many more but those 2 stick in mind immediately.

Schizoids........surely there must be a game in here somewhere?

    er......NO!

and one I have to mention on the Atari VCS - E.T. The Extra Terrestrial. - yes I was one of the one's that actually bought it at full price before they ended up in bargain bins at ?0.50p and the rest of the unsold copies in a hole in the desert!

Made a mistake not playing it for years but the first level of Midnight Resistance i never liked. On the back of the jeep, found that very dull so stupidly stopped playing it because of that.

Gave it another chance and loved it big time. Still think that first part of level 1 isnt that great though

I was tempted, but if it didn't have the bugs in it, it would have been an enjoyable game.

I mean really I used to laugh every time it reminded me how long I'd stonked for, made me feel like a pornstar

On all versions of Midnight resistance I'm sure if you jump off the jeep it gets blown up, either that or it may back up and run you over, but I can't remember.

I can't like the Speccy version as the Megadrive version was crap too and that was pretty close to the coin-op. Which to be honest it the only version of Midnight resistance worth playing, simply because of the 2 sticks.

Like Smash TV one for movement and one for shooting.

Jump off the jeep. It won't blow up, and you can jump back on so it won't run you over. Brilliant game, and winnable, with great ending.

I still play Great Space Race. Find it kinda relaxing (cuz ya don't need to press any buttons for about an hour)

Well I have an SNA of stonkers that only crashes after you've played a game to completion. So in these days of emulation and almost instant reloading, it's a good game to play from time to time.

As for craps games I played a lot:

    Transylvanian Tower
Admiral Graf Spee (which was kind of fun if you broke in the basic program and give yourself loads of fuel and torpedoes).

Play For Your Life - hammering opponents saved it.

I used to really love Technician Ted, so when I heard about Costa Capers, I saved up my pocket money and bought it (for about ?10). Because I had saved up for it, I really really wanted to believe it was a great game... After playing it for a couple of weeks, I finally accepted the fact that is wasn't very good at all!!

Another one I can half agree with, I thought it was great back in 86 or something, now I think it's utter turd :D

But when I was a kid I did play it long enough to finish it.

Now I can't get 10 rooms in without getting deaded

Funny how you become shite at old games, and new games become easier and easier :D

I think I could probably plump for Caves of Doom too. Terrible shite with primitive graphics and annoying gameplay but I played it quite a bit back in the 1980s. The screen editor (which was terrible) was so exciting too - almost like making your own game.

Possibly what gave Harry Price the idea to fiddle with the graphics and pass it off as I Ain't Got No Body.

In fact, fuck it, I'm off to play COD now.

Thought of another one... Freez Bees. Really liked it, used to play it a lot, and then I bought an issue of SU with Go Bear Go on it (Megatape 2, I think). After playing that, Freez Bees seemed pretty crap in comparison!!

Exactly what went through my mind, but I've ripped into old Harry so much in the past I just can't do it anymore :D

I remember a Crash covertape game called Software House - a highly realistic simulator of the 8-bit software market. The spelling was dodgy, and every now and again the screens wouldn't draw properly (UDG or colour issues probably).

I still play it occaisionally, which I guess makes me a masochist. It's not a very good game but I don't know of any alternatives.

Having said that I'd consider Rock Star Ate My Hamster to fall into the crap category, even though it's great fun to play - it would definitely be a CGC winner IMHO.

Like I said, it's not that the game itself was crap... But Go Bear Go just seemed to do the whole thing a shiteload better. But, y'know, each to their own, and all that!! :-)

Brat Attack. Pretty backgrounds, hellishly boring and seemingly random layout of the map. This bastard game had some potential but sucked harder than an average-sized black hole.

Grange Hill - played it for hours hoping something interesting would happen. It didnt :(

Felt I had to persevere as I have blown my pocket money on it and had to return the 1st copy coz it wouldnt even load. As it was the second copy would only load on one side.

I wrote the Atari ST version and the jeep doesn't get blown up. It does reverse when it gets to the end of the bridge though, and kills all the baddies it touches.
