    FYI,

AVG just totally screwed up our system at work. The latest update detected a trojan on our server and some idiot clicked on clean and screwed it up.

Had to restore from backup and remove avg off all the systems...guess we need a new free virus program!

    thanks.

Will you exchange your knowledge in attracting the opposite sex to my skill on computers?

(My wife won?t be happy about it of course. She likes the pc fast and virusfree)

I used to use AVG, but had some major problems with it - can't even remember exactly what now, apart from it totally stopping itself without me knowing and leaving my computer wide open. This happened a couple of times.

I now use Avast and really do rate it.

Yep, Avast! for sure. But I always merge those two tray icons, and disable vbr and sound effects.

    bumpage!

ive been running avast for a few weeks now. my computer is ok for the most part, ie it turns on etc. but i'm stillgetting massive problems. eg i sometimes run the virus check twice just to make sure, and both times it will come up with different viruses. and im not sure it has got them all as i get massive slowdown opposed to smooth running ive had up untill a few days ago.

i wont be home for about 5 hours, so i can access it at the moment but any suggestins will be helpful thanks.

    Do you have a firewall?

Sygate Personal Firewall and Comodo are both good.

Although Sygate Personal Firewall hasn't been updated in a good number of years and it's now unavaliable through their own site (but you can get it on oldversion.com) it's still my firewall of choice.

I can't remember the last time a virus or trojan got on any of the PCs I set up using that and avg.
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

    wiki definition of a firewall

Things are getting on your PC because you don't have a firewall. When you get a firewall you can stop unwanted network traffic.

Viruses and those annoying popup messages that look like proper windows system messages are appearing on your PC because your PC is wide open to the net. If you get a firewall it automatically blocks most things and you get to choose which apps you want to have access to the net.

    --edit--
Comodo free firewall (pretty advanced and in depth, if you don't even know what a firewall is you'll probably be stumped with this, but it is meant to be the best solution)

Sygate Personal Firewall (get 5.6.2808. They've ceased this version but I've never had a problem with it. Very easy to use - asks you if you want a program to access the net, you can say yes or no. So easy my mum can use it. And a mate who's only had a PC since last summer and never used one before that gets on fine with it aswell)

ive installed the sygate one. it already has a bunch of programs that it says want to access the web, i only allowed the ones that i knew were kosher, ie the avast ones.

ive had to turn it off, it was using up all my available memory. any ideas?

I use AVG free edition and I'm fairly happy with it (although I've noticed that when you don't update it, your pc goes all crazzy...)

Hmm, it shouldn't use much memory. Mine is only taking up 9 meg.

Maybe it's a problem with the logs it's creating. Try fiddling about with those settings.

    Tools > Options > Log

I have Security, System and Traffic logs enabled at 512 kb and 30 days.

Clamwin for me - light and very unobtrusive.

Oh and for a firewall - I've got and old p11 in the corner with IPCOP on it and I use a Smoothwall box at work.

    Actually, what version of windows?

I know that Sygate 5.xx doesn't like WinME and 98 (and probably 95).

It does work fine on Win2000 and XP though.
