MAME (PC based) Question

edited April 2008 in Chit chat
I want a version of MAME for Win XP / Pentium 4 that supports the hi score save - I seem to remember, from a forum somewhere, that after a certain version, MAME no longer supported the hi scores, because real arcade machines would not do so when unplugged (bloody purists). Correct me if I am wrong.

So, what is the best version of MAME that last supported hi scores and what ROM set would it use?

Thanks folks.

I don't know if newer versions of MAME don't support high scores, but some games (Tetris) store scores in NVRAM (so it's stored in nvram files).

There was a file (hiscore.dat) that enabled to save scores in many games. The last version can be found here.

And remember: if you enable cheats, no hi scores will be saved.
    I was there, too
An' you know what they said?
Well, some of it was true!

Mame Plus! supports hiscores and a few other things like auto volume leveling for games that are to loud/quiet. This is the one I use.

You will also need this lot too:

    Latest hiscore.dat

    Latest cheat.dat

    Latest history.dat

Just put those .dat's in the main Mame directory. As for a romset, UTorrent is your friend... ;)

The official MAME build stopped supporting hiscore.dat around version .120. I have .106 as my "main" build and that does save high scores.

Or use one that supports save states.

Are you guy's using a full rom set and not downloading individual game roms then? I'm desperate to get hold of the Carnevil chd but can only find it in 50+gig torrent downloads. I only want Carnevil so that's no good to me :(

Well click on one of the FULL .chd sets and 'select' the game you want when it appears in UTorrent and before you select ok to start downloading. Easy! ;)

Edit: You better have a kick ass PC to run it too. Most of these .chd games have very high spec requirements.
