You've got a carpet sweeper that looks like a Tiger tank? Cool!

I wonder if they used the dk'tronics light pen to draw those lines.

The style of graphics typical of Probe's later output on the Spectrum. Awful. Yeah, I know I keep harping on about the ****ness of the graphics of the later titles they produced.

Agreed. Graphically, Robocop 3 was as big a let down as the film in my opinion. Hate those grainy attempts at doing 'realistic' graphics that crept into the Spectrum titles towards the end. The Spectrum wasn't capable of it, and it wasn't playing to the strengths of the computer, merely trying to make up for a deficit.

Here's some choice selection of Probe's games.

That's not to say that they didn't produce some good looking games. They did.

Mr Heli has quite a high score on WOS.

I checked and it looks rather ugly, but fortunately it plays very good.

Ghost Hunters graphics were quite ropey and also flickered badly, if i remember right everything was blue.
Also, the graphics in Monty's Innocent have aged badly too.

I remember being taken aback by how poor the graphics were in Lord of the Rings. The loading screen, with the Nazgul on horseback surrounded by scenes from the book, is rather lovely and atmospheric.

The in-game graphics consist mainly of large yellow rectangles.

    Compare and contrast...

definitely 1 more vote for highlander.

    atrocious.

Anything that was a total mess.

Simple could be just as fun, games a game... given the limits of speccy.

Choow, stuff like thunderblade, just too much... i remember crash giving it a great review, it was just an unplayable mess:-?

Special mention to worldcup football manager.... f'ee 2 proves simple is good enough, wc was a gawd awfull mess.

Viking Raiders had really basic graphics but was a really fun game to play, well for me anyways.

Not the worst title screen ever,.. but possibly the ugliest dithering drawing ever.

That is just how I hate Speccy graphics. OK, random dithering (rather than hand-stippling) at that size is just about OK, but why go out to a black outline, then add a light outline around that? Ocean started to do it to sprites and it looks terrible.

Amstrad ports, or parallel developments. There's nothing 'grainy' or 'realistic' about it. It's an automatic dithering process applied to lo-res fat-pixel graphics in 16 colours. A few bits may have been touched up slightly by hand, but not by much.

I suppose you are refering to CharlesDavies stuff at SpecialFX games.. but I find his work very good and clear.. so much on in-game graphics as in loader-screens it is.

even though, its true that some tiny sprites from Cabal and MidnightResistance looks too fat with that double outline.

Xadom loading screen is very surrealistic:

But that game is just magical. Don't mess with Holy Xadom!!! :P
  • edited December 2011
It's not exactly aged gracefully, but I thought Xadom looked quite decent for a mid-'83 game. In some ways I'd say that its quirky style makes it a lot more memorable than some of the professionally produced, yet rather formulaic, games that followed.
  • edited December 2011
That game simply has something special to it. I know that what I'm saying is completely subjective, but I can't avoid it. To me Xadom is just charming. It estimulated my imagination as a child in unbelievable amounts.

Btw, I wonder what there was on the author's bong while conceiving this game...
