It's Smokin'

I like to start the day with one of Nick's highlighted video's and today's is a wry look at the Zee Ex Spectrum from over the pond.

Smokin' - that would be the heatsink ma'am.

Don't forget the Zeelog zee80 processor!

    :D

I'm *so* glad I plumped for searching Google Video rather than just YouTube - this video isn't actually hosted on either, but on CNET's website.

What do the Yanks know about the Ze Ex Spectrum? (present company accepted of course!)
    (and the Timex machines don't count :-) :-) :-) )

I just like that all these years later, in a country that didn't really have any real Speccy related goodness until after emulation.............They still managed to get a screenshot of JSW in there :D
    Every night is curry night!

I've only met one person here in the States who knew "something" about the Speccy ... except he didn't know it by that name ... he called it "the old Timex computer" ... and that was back in '96 ... from what I remember he told me he got it for free when he bought a subscription to a magazine (iIrc) or it may have been a gift from NPR (here in MN) after one of their donation drives.

Of course we know from an Apple keynote that the Steve Jobs is a Manic Miner fan.

Nine times out of ten "the old Timex computer" means the TS1000. At least that's what I've found where spectrum = ts1000 comes into the minds of people who have a vague recollection of things.

"Zeelog Zeee 80A" and "Zee X Spectrum"... it all sounds so very wrong.

There's more where that came from - RssCheck (link in sig) monitors Google's Video Search (which in turn monitors a whole heap of online video archives) and reports on any new Sinclair and SAM related videos automatically. You can either use the RSS feed it generates, or subscribe to the E-mail alerts (text and HTML versions available).

Some real gems have been found through this.

From that evidence we must also assume that he 'is a fan of' fat smiley faces and the periodic table.

I'd have been more impressed if he'd been using the 6031769 cheat

Well, well! My respect for the man has just gone up another notch.

That's something that I always found odd. Most people don't remember it, and from the few who still do most of them seem to be much older than the average Spectrum user.

I don't blame them. I pronounced it like that until Death corrected me last year.

I always pronounced it "Zill-log". Is that the right way?

I thought continental Europe learned UK english?

I pronounce it "Z-eye-log", which makes it the correct pronunciation :)

Reminds me of something that was pointed out to me on one of my Czech / Slovak / Polish trips - when they all got their Spectrums as children, it never really occurred to them that the Basic keywords they were programming with were supposed to roughly correspond to English-language words. (Which is fair enough when you think about it... the use of English in Basic is just bizarre. What has 'for' got to do with looping? Okay, it sort of makes sense in mathematical terminology, but not to an 8-year-old, especially one whose first language isn't English...)

As a result, they always read and pronounced them as if they were Czech words. Which is why the correct pronunciation of Poke (of DigiSID fame)'s handle is 'pok-kay'...

I have a trascendental big problem! ;) How is the correct pronunciation of ZX in english?

"Zed-ex", I think, which reminds me of Zed from the Police Academy. :D

@AA: We where taught British English in school, but the ZX Spectrum wasn't part of it. :)

Spanish and Portuguese read letters independently if there's no vowels in between. That's why 'Zee-X Spectrum' sounds better to us. The Spanish, for example, say 'Sétta Éckeess Spectroom', or something. :p

    100% Zed-Ex !

Zee-ex would sound like something from America as they say Zee not Zed.

Yeah, "zee" is only used in the USA. Every other english speaker says "zed", which is why I was surprised you (zxbruno) say "zee".

Said to the guy who has "Location: Santa Ana, CA, USA" next to all of his posts.
