I rather enjoyed the movie, the nerds down at Twin Galaxies are great really into there thing, they do appear to be over protective of Billy Mitchell, who mostly seems to have given up playing. He just let's his records stands and doesn't try to improve on them until he's beaten.

reading the article linked in the above post shows that the film makers have tried to up the battle between Steve and Billy, by saying that Billy held the world records, which at the time he didn't.

I think the only retro game, that should really count, from a Zen/Jedi/Whatever point of view is ROBOTRON

and I'm shit at it, btw in case you wondered.

I agree with that. You have to be in a trance to play that game properly!

King Of Kong is one of the funniest films I've seen in years!

I can already see a film version starring Ben Stiller as Billy Mitchell & Owen Wilson as Steve Weibe.....

sorry "amusements" but the one im going for does have a few right at the back, theres a walking dead machine, and a driving one if i remember right

  • The dangerous machines are always in the back room, like the ones that take your soul or transport you to another dimension. On the other hand, the machines near the front door of an arcade are made to pay out more to encourage people in. Not a good job for you Mel, you would spend all your time on the pin-tables.

  • I always felt that the King of Kong "tape" was a crock of **** anyway. If I remember correctly there's some weird glitch going on when he breaks a million points that looked well dodgy. But as Walter Day was BM's bitch biggest fan he let it stand. Puts into a bit of context now all his refusals to play Steve Weibe or any of the other DK master players in public.

I guess this also means he's lost his first-ever-player-to-play-a-perfect-game-of-Pacman title?

    Yup.

Brian Crecente reported yesterday that Guinness World Records (which collaborates with Twin Galaxies) has also wiped out all of Mitchell’s achievements — including an unrelated milestone, the first perfect game in Pac-Man history, registered in 1999.
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

Has anyone seen The King of Kong? It's a film/documentary about the battle to be the best player at the arcade game Donkey Kong.

A similar film is Man vs. Snake which is currently on netflix (uk)

Yup, that's a good documentary too. Not as good As KoK , but you root for the guy as he comes across as a decent bloke.
  • Why would you bother cheating to set a high score on a 30 year old game?

On a separate note, I'd like to submit my score for the Manic Miner Challenge. 10,000 points on Central Cavern.

I'm just about to submit mine for 14593 points...

I wanna tell you a story 'bout a woman I know...

Money, prestige, fame or just good old being classed as the best in the world at something. Billy Mitchell has achieved all of those and I'm willing to bet his personal businesses and finances have certainly benefited from his association. You could ask why someone would cheat when all you're doing is getting a road bike around some roads in France really quickly or running 100m down a track.

Same applies for just about anything with a world title. It goes hand in hand with very selfish and self obsessed people - not anyone prepared to put time or effort to any common good or helping others - just dedicating everything to a pointless egocentric goal. The top levels of most sports and athletics are rife with drugs cheating / enhancement and skirting around the spirit of the rules to gain an advantage. Always depresses me that top level athletes and sportspeople are referred to as "role models", when they are often the perfect example of the type of people the world would be a better place without.
