I tried it again last night out fo morbid curosity...its still stinks - what they hell were they thinking!!! Renegade looks like a 1950's teddy boy and the 'dinosaurs' look like angry version of Dino from the flintstones...

I bet the shower you had afterwards still didn't make you feel clean, did it?

No - it didnt, I still felt like I had done a swan dive into an olympic sized pool full of warm vomit and sour milk. I just cant see why they didnt make a third renegae game in the same ilk as the other two - They could have made the final chapter a really decent game - instead of a pile of steaming dino poo. The first 2 had an element of gritty urban decay which added to the over quality of the game - so instead of a third instalment with tougher bosses, more challenging levles and possibly a greater variety of locations - what do we get? Miniture captain caveman clones...
what I really think its so great and unique about renegade is that the game isn't like any other fighting game I can think of (Well except probablly subway vigillant, that is also quite interesting but not as good).
Renegade 2 is great but it's a side scrolling like double dragon or final fight, but in renegade, you have that unique feel of "arena fighting" it's you against an entire gang, on a very small and limited space, and it's a real "kill or be killed" envoyrment. and that's what makes it so unique and exciting. on a side scrolling beat em up, I've always felt that fighting was just a part of the trip to reach some place. the hero wants revenge so he walks the city until he get's his goal, it's not that much different from a mario or a sonic if you think about it...
but on an "arena fighter" you are already there, there is no trip and no goal except getting out of that place alive, it's like a bruce lee scenario from hell, with a twist of the warriors. and you have to be smart also... you know there is a boss that is stronger then the rest and probably even stronger than you, and he well cheat...so you need to know who will you defeat first (usually the guy with the bat) so you know who will be standing and be helping the boss beating the crap out of you...
unfortunatelly I always sucked at renegade... and never actuall reached beyond level 3 (and died on the first punch of level 3 so I have no idea what's happening there also) and It's been a long while since I finished level one...however I always go back to renegade...
unfortunatelly the "arena fighter" game never really catch up... I guess the only modern versions that came close to it, was that fighting game for genesis (shemnue was it?) and the Xbox game of bruce lee (but I never played it so I really cant tell...).
on a final note, subway vigillante...it looks good (well they all look like ballet dancers...) it has the same concept as renegade...but its not as good...why? I'm not sure maybe the lack of variety in the enemies and scenarios... the game play as I remember was quite nice...maybe I'll give it a go and review it soon!

Blimey, you're mixing two generations of hadware that had another in between there. I think you mean Virtua Fighter 3, which was on arcade and Dreamcast.
Shenmue used the VF engine for fight sequences though :)
Many interesting points, VanTammen. I have not thought about much of what you wrote, but I do think you are very correct. Even in Target Renegade you always wants to go on forward and I get annoyed if there turns up more enemies.
on a final note, subway vigillante...it looks good (well they all look like ballet dancers...)
The games looks vaguely similar, but it is in my opinon obvious that the Renegade graphics are much better.
Subway Vigilante seems to suffer from worse drawn sprites, and bad selections of colours. Renegade does also use BRIGHT which makes it much more attractive to the eye.
Even the floor tiles are much better in Renegade. :) In Vigilante all tiles are identical where in Renegade they actually all looks different. I have never thought of that of course, but now it does add even more to the very polished image of Renegade.

you are right I wanted to say dreamcast...(since genesis in portugal was megadrive I've always mixed genesis with dreamcast...sort of silly actualy). virtua fighter had your 1-vs-1 if i'm not mistaken there where some areas in shemnue where you had to fight one dozens of guys in the same space...
Nice comparison, Rickard. Subway Vigilante looks truly dire in direct comparison to Renegade. Even the small heads that show how many lives you got left look so much better on Renegade.
I also agree there are very few of those "arena" fighters. Going slightly off-topic, pretty much everyone knows Final Fight, but as far as arcade games go, if you liked this kind of game and have never seen 'Violent Storm' by Konami then I'd suggest checking it out. It is loaded with humorous touches. No Speccy version of that one, but quite frankly I didn't like Final Fight on the Speccy either and would much rather play the arcade versions ...

Haha that's OK since I'm from England I always say Megadrive, but if I'm talking about the good ol' days of gaming here in the states people always say "what's a Megadrive", and I always end up saying "oops the Sega Genesis". One guy kinda knew what I was talking about as he asked me if that was the "Sega-CD" (as adversed to Mega-CD).
Try explaining "The Speccy" to an American, they look at you like you're living in a fantasy world or something
Younger guy I work with 25 I think he is spends all his free time gaming and reading up about games, because he has severe OCD and only leaves the house to come to work. Now he knows quite a bit about games, but he asked me once "What's Jet Set Willy then?"
I explained MM and JSW to him as best as I could, and he was like ":???:".
I guess you really did have to be there at the time :D
Tell you which could possibly be the worst arena type fighter in existence Combatribes, the arcade was awful, and the SNES conversion was just as bad, a truly awful game.

Final Fight on the Speccy is a horrible, horrible conversion.....even just thinking about it makes me start to see Renegade 3 in a more positive light....
Target Renegade was the best beat-em-up for me....well, in single player at least. I didn't play Renegade until after Target, so I didn't find it as good...
Barbarian was the best 2 player!! Excellent fun lopping off heads!
virtua fighter had your 1-vs-1 if i'm not mistaken there where some areas in shemnue where you had to fight one dozens of guys in the same space...
Yes, Shenmue uses a slightly modified version of the Virtua Fighter 3 engine for fight sequences, which is really good IMO. I remember the first time I saw VF3 in the arcade. I fell in love :)

Yeah, the trilogy Crime Fighters / Vendetta / Violent Storm pretty much took scrolling fighters to the limit. The middle one being my personal fave. Fear the bucket!

I could weep for this game I really could.:(
I still think Renegade 3 is utter shite, however.
