How do you make AY sound?

edited June 2008 in Development
Are there tools?
Or is it all done in assembler?
Any tutorials around for people who like things explained in simple terms?
Ta!

Basically, you need to get a decent hot curry down you and then fart through a cardboard tube.

If you want to sound like a +3, do it in the bath.

    Tools? Certainly. Take your pick...

Vortex Tracker is the most powerful (and gets convenience points in most people's books for being a Windows app), but unless you're already familiar with trackers you'll probably want to start off with Soundtracker along with the tutorial in issues 8-10 of ZXF magazine, written by someone really awesome who should really be given a knighthood or something.

I have to agree, Vortex Tracker II is a great program for making AY music.

I like the way it exports a speccy tape with the music player and data embedded in it.

All you have to do is load the resulting tapefiles and call the player routine once every interrupt to play back the music.

The program even shows a simple example of the required machine code (using HALT) that you could you use to play the music back.

Although, you would probably want to use an IM2 interrupt routine eventually so that you can play back AY music in the background.

I still haven't got the hang of making really good "instruments" yet. Most of mine sound similar to each other.

But check out the supplied example files, are are some quite impressive effects achieved with the AY hardware.
