What do you think about this? :)

    Fun read, thank you :-)

I've heard of the Higgs Boson before but never of this Mayan correlation, related to CERN. Have seen a couple of different "End of The World" prediction shows on History channel and Discovery ... what interesting non/sense. Sounds like a great pilot to a sci-fi show.

Interesting that the Collider and the Mayan drawing are very similar...

Wasn't the world meant to end in 2000/2001 and countless times before that as well, according to various other peoples "translations" of the Mayan text, though?

I do find it a bit worrying that scientists are trying to recreate the Big Bang, when I've always thought that the very thing that might have caused it in the first place was/will be someone trying to recreate it....

I think I can sum it up in just three words:

    Absolute superstitious twaddle.

June 5th 2012....dunno where it gets December 9th from in the article. Anyhoo, not long left now.

This is just the latest in a long, long line of end-of-the-world claims. Have people already forgotten the eclipse in 1999 that was supposed to herald the end times? What happened to that splinter religious group (a Jewish group, I think, although I'm not certain) who *knew* the world was destined to end in 2006?

Humans have a very short collective memory. This sort of nonsense has sprung up so many times in history its incredible and when it doesn't happen everyone shrugs and gets on with it until the next crank comes along with the same story.

The Mayans are a perfect fodder for this sort of stuff because their civilisation was all but destroyed which means people can make-up or "uncover" various "secrets" it held that the Mayans are no longer around to counter.

Some "scientists" air their concerns about the LHC. I can't see they've got owt to worry about though myself, but what do I know? They've even started legal procedings to stop it from being switched on.

If a black hole is created, we'll all die in blissful ignorance.

Not buying any of that Mayan stuff.

Interesting input on this can be found on NPR(National Public Radio), right about here. Takes about 12minutes to listen to it.

Turned out to be an earthquake which set off a Tsunami taking out the Mayan people in Crete. The civialisation lasted another 20 years - never survived the knock on effects even though most of the people would have survived the Tsunami itself. They had the Labaryinthe where lived the medusa chap.

The end of the world. I often think about what it wouldbe like.

    Scenario1:
Sitting there one moment, a rumble like an earth quake, everything starts floating about randomly then we are engulfed by lava as the world breaks appart.

    Scenario2:
Looking up at the sky, look what the f*ck is that, over the next few hours we watch it getting bigger and bigger, closer and closer. The newscasters all got home to be with their famililies, power goes down as all the electric workers go home, everyone clinging to each other as we brace for impact.

    Scenario3:
Over the course of 6 months to two years, the people and life on this plannet slowly get sick, their hair falls out people start to develop leasions and bruises. One by one we die as we are all killed off by a huge wave of intergalactic radiation.

    Secnaro4:
The world starts running out of oxigen due to some fast acting chemical reaction, or theft by aliens and we all slowly die of suffication over a period of a few weeks or months.

    Senario5:
A huge volcano errupts causing the sky to go black for years, causing the plants then the animals to die, and us to starve. In this case I imagine the army rounding the general public up and systematically farming us, by feeding us the dead and old, and eventually eating us untill the sky's clear with the excuse of keeping the human race alive.

I'll bet you're a hoot at parties! LOL Just kidding, it was an interesting read, maybe you could expand it into a "100 Ways the Earth Could Perish" book or something :)

Hehehe, I was going to link to a couple of Debbie Downer skits from SNL but apparently Ootoobe cleans those out quickly.

Yeah I realise that, the world is alot tougher than us. So when I see all these end of the world theories, I always think of it as the end of the human existance, rather than the end of the world.

it might, if the world ends when it's demolished to make way for a hyperspace bypass, it'll be at the same time :p

The BBC4 documentary "The Big Bang Machine" last week was very good.

The LHC is NOT a black hole machine, the doomsayers have got the wrong end of the stick. Cern and the American lab have been throwing high-energy particles together for years and the world survived.

(Wednesday is just the latest stage of powering up the machine, from what I was reading earlier that actual EXPERIMENTS don't start till October...)

Yes, the experiments will take about a year to get to the type of energy they really want to be mucking about with. The doomsayers aren't ALL wrong...there are a lot of things that could potentially still knacker up a bit...

The most disturbing thing about the programs I've watched about CERN is the fact the scientists keep saying "shouldn't" and "miniscule chance" when talking about things going wrong...and some have even admitted they have absolutely no idea what will happen, if anything at all...

LHC switch-on fears are completely unfounded

"The LHC Safety Assessment Group have reviewed and updated a study first completed in 2003, which dispels fears of universe-gobbling black holes and of other possibly dangerous new forms of matter, and confirms that the switch-on will be completely safe.

The report, 'Review of the Safety of LHC Collisions', published in IOP Publishing's Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics, proves that if particle collisions at the LHC had the power to destroy the Earth, we would never have been given the chance to exist, because regular interactions with more energetic cosmic rays would already have destroyed the Earth or other astronomical bodies.

The Safety Assessment Group writes, "Nature has already conducted the equivalent of about a hundred thousand LHC experimental programmes on Earth ? and the planet still exists."

The Safety Assessment Group compares the rates of cosmic rays that bombard Earth, other planets in our solar system, the Sun and all the other stars in our universe itself to show that hypothetical black holes or strangelets, that have raised fears in some, will in fact pose no threat.

The report also concludes that, since cosmic-ray collisions are more energetic than those in the LHC, but are incapable of producing vacuum bubbles or dangerous magnetic monopoles, we should not fear their creation by the LHC."

Yes, yes....nature does this all the time...

But nothing messes up Nature more than when mankind starts buggering around with it...
