Gauntlet III

I know it was never officially released on the C64, but did it actually get a retail release on the Spectrum (or Amstrad for that matter).

Were you looking for this Gauntlet III? If so, yes it appeared on the Spectrum. :-)

It was apparently released on the Amstrad too.

You can see the Amstrad version via these links:-
    http://www.cpczone.net/game/388
    http://genesis8.free.fr/amstrad/game-rom/amstrad-gamef.php?prog_id=1924&title=Gauntlet%20III&creator=Software%20creations
    http://www.cpcgamereviews.com/g/index2.html#gauntlet_3
    http://tacgr.emuunlim.com/downloads/filedetail.php?recid=365

In the first link you can read Amstrad users commenting on the game and also the last link mentions that "Amstrad Action" issue 71 rated the game 85%.

Amstrad retail price is listed as £11.99/£15.99. (I assume that's the tape/disk prices).

    Hope that helps, DP

Remember being disappointed with Gauntlet 3, really wanted to like it but it was too different from Gauntlet 1/2 and was way too green !

I quite like it! I also really, really wanted it back in the day, but couldn't find it anywhere....

I agree with both deadpan and psj in that it wasn't a good Gauntlet game but I was able to ignore that and enjoy the game on its own. Just my threepenny.

I love Gauntlet III, and was quite amazed with it in all its 3Dyness. Funny that a lot of people think that it wasn't released. Great game. Would love the disk version if there is such a fing.

I think this may be caused by (1) It is quite a "late" game for 8-bit systems & (2) The C-64 version was completed, but never got a full official retail release (e.g. see the Trivia section at the bottom of this page):- http://www.mobygames.com/game/amiga/gauntlet-iii-the-final-quest
As it happens, this did not apply to the other 8-bit ports.

Yes. On the Speccy anyway. I've got it, can send you a photo if you'd like.

I keep meaning to type the instructions up for the archive but haven't got round to it yet...

Thanks for all the help guys :)
I actually don't mind it, although it's intricate visuals (especially on the 16 bit offerings) means that there's just not enough enemies onscreen at any one time.

My main problem with it was that it was way too easy (a problem that a lot of Software Creations developed games suffered from) and there was no fight with the evil demon Capricorn at the end, as promised. Not on the Speccy at any rate :(

There is an interview with Dean Belfield, the programmer of Gaunlet 3 on the ZX Spectrum here:

From what I remember of playing this game, was the 3D was mightily impressive, but the game itself was pretty tedious after a while. Still it was one of those games I saw in Your Sinclair and thought, 'One day you shall be mine!' I was never a fan of the original Gauntlet games either, but I hadn't played them at that stage.

Most people seemed to quite like it, but I just couldn't get into it.

    Something just didn't seem right.

Plus they could have put it in any box and call it anything, it just wasn't gauntlet, it was like an RPG but without the RP :D
