    I've got a similar phone, but the volume is very low and it doesn't ring... no idea how can I fix the volume.

    Find your local telco's test number (most exchanges have them). Basically you dial it and it calls you back, this allows you to test the ringer (that number is 175 here but it will vary depending on where you are). Either that or call it from your mobile.

    Then, see where the ringing voltage is going. It should be on the order of 90 volts AC, you can test this with a multimeter's AC setting (the frequency is fairly low though, about 18Hz or so). Make sure it's getting to the ringer. If it is, then the solenoids might not be working. You can further test this by checking to see whether the solenoids have appropriately low resistance across their coils. Also note that 90 VAC can give you a bit of shock so be careful!

    I always keep my eye out on jumble sales or just people selling random junk on the market for a proper old GPO telephone.
    made of old tires and sulphur like a telephone should be (any colour you like etc.)
    sadly I've yet to spot one, though my old electronics teacher managed to get hold of one, it was sat in the classroom, awaiting being fixed

    My other half picked up a really nice phone which is the same pattern as the 1930's GPO model on ebay for a couple of quid for me to rig up for her. It turns out it was made in the 1960's for the indian market.

    The proper English made models go for 80+ quid and the Indian PO version cost less than a tenth including postage.

    Nah, the council won't have phones that good. They'll have all the square flat ones that were stupidly popular and trendy in the 80s. And they'd only have them cuz everyone realised how shite they looked and chucked 'em out :-D
