He played the Marquis de Cabbaras in "Neverwhere" in 1996 (a character who was based on the Doctor) and he plays Johnston in "Peep Show".
He was actually in New Who back in 2005 (he played a minor role in the two-part finale) but people have been suggesting him for the role for a while; I mentioned him about a year ago on another forum as a possible successor to Tennant. I've not seen him in that much stuff but it's said he could bring a Pertwee-like authority to the role whilst still being able to do the eccentric stuff quite well. He'd also be the first black Doctor which would be quite interesting given the fact the Doctor tends to viisit all sorts of historical epochs.

Black Africans have visited and settled in the British Isles in every period that humans have inhabited the islands. While people in every village wouldn't have seen a black person walking down gropecunt lane every port and major city would have had black trades people.
A black doctor would have no problem fitting into any period of British or European history it would just be an easy way to explain away his eccentric behaviour.
The world has been a small place for thousands of years. Remember US citizens will soon celebrate the fact that some totally ill prepared pilgrims were saved from starvation by Natives who spoke wonderful English and could act as middlemen in discussions with the natives. One of those native Americans had previously held a job in London :)
I thought this was on the cards (tennant quitting) over a year ago when Russell T Davis said he was leaving.
I stopped watching it after that dire Xmas ep with Kylie Minogue in. I could just about stomach Tennant's Dick Van Dyke accent and his "too much sunny delight" acting but when i heard that Freema was going to get less screen time and Catherine Tate would be in it i decided enough was enough.
Im not going to bother with the 4 specials next year but am hoping that Stephen Moffat will give it a much needed kick up the arse in 2010 and i would love to see Patterson Joseph in the role as the Doctor.
But at the end of the day no ones going to eclipse Tom Baker
Alf Garnet would have made an interesting Doctor Who.
Warren Mitchell playing Alf Garnet playing the doctor? I have enough trouble explaining the story lines the Mrs misses when she's dishing up dinner as it is without the added complexity of this :)
I think people are missing what made Eccleston and Tennant such great Doctors: they weren't comic actors, they were actors who could do comedy. Paterson Joseph doesn't seem to fit the latter profile, IMHO.
I say follow the signs: Tennant had close links with RTD as he starred in Casanova. So, which actor has worked closely with Steve Moffat in the past, and has both comedy and drama credits?

Joseph is a proper actor who's done comedy, though. In fact his most well-known recent role is Johnston in the Channel 4 comedy "Peep Show".

Step forward Richard Coyle:
I think he could make a great Doctor.
That would be interesting! They'll presumably want to step away from the innocence of Tenant's Doctor (as seen in Paul McGann and Peter Davidson), and go for a different primary attribute, such as McCoy's slyness and plotting, Tom Baker's eccentricity, Colin Baker's brash loudness, or Pertwee's dandified "uncle" style. Or perhaps something new altogether, and Richard Coyle is very good at adding feeling to characters.
An important part of the Doctor's new appearance is his clothing, of course. We've already had lots of styles, such as Tom Baker's long coat, longer scarf and floppy hat, Peter Davidson's cricket outfit, Christopher Eccleston's casual leather jacket style, David Tenant's old fashioned suit style, so any bets as to what they'll dress the next Doctor up with?

Four years is a good run, and he's a *very* good actor who won't be short of work after this.
But now we have a year's worth of "How's he gonna die?" and "Who's going to be the new Doctor?" to endure.
Patterson Joseph has already been hinted as being the next Doctor. I hope so, he'll be ace.
Who he?

Oh, and he looks fucking cool:
he looks like one of them fancy lads.

Last seen with a ventriloquists dummie talking to an American life coach about his career.

I simply have to ask - what the devil is the matter with his hair???

strictly speaking there are 5 specials before he quits - this xmas's one titled "The Next Doctor" and the 4 specials in 2009

Probably the same with the Dr, he can't pick a significant chunk of the role he plays he can only do his best in it.
