Well I hope you all have a really great time, which I'm sure you will do.
I've never been to a speccy meet before, but hopefully I will do one day!
I won't be going to this one for a couple of reasons. The main one being I've had to knock off the alcohol altogether for an entire year. I haven't set foot in a pub for eight months now (I never thought I'd be saying that!) and the temptation is too great. :D From spring next year though I'll be able to have a drink again - Nice!
Also, I think I may have something else going on on that day, with it being close to Christmas (family and all that :( ).
Out of curiosity though I was looking at the transport options from here to Cardiff. I can get a direct train Monday to Saturday from Chester to Cardiff, taking exactly three hours and getting me into Cardiff Central at around 1:20pm. (It's easy for me to get to Chester). Seems quicker and cheaper than the Liverpool option from where I live. There's also a really handy one back leaving Cardiff at around 7pm in the evening. It is quite cheap too - I may do this trip sometime anyway.
The Welsh assembly subidise this direct train which connects the North Wales coast to the captial in South Wales - very handy!
Still, it doesn't run on a Sunday and there'd probably be engineering works anyway. :D Just wish this happened back when I lived in Bristol as Bristol to Cardiff was for all practical purposes a "local" Journey.
You'll be missed. Will have to organize a CSS tea and biscuits some time in the new year.
Thanks for saying so - compared to many of the long-time "heavyweights" on here, I'm hardly a major contributer to the speccy scene!
I'm more of a casual dabbler really, but I'll certainly be thinking of some further interesting speccy related things to get involved in and discuss in 2009 after this year's CGC has finished.
Well I'd like to buy you a non-alcoholic beverage by way of thanks for hosting CSSCGC this year and creating the Solaris package of FUSE. Speaking of which, as well as a new version of FUSE, there's a new version of OpenSolaris due out this month which lets you use ZFS as the boot partition and includes an equivalent of Time Machine on the Mac. Once I get my new hard drive installed I'll be running up OpenSolaris 2008.11 in Virtual Box so I might need your help again.
Cheers Andrew, that's very kind of you!
Of course, I'm also happy to continue to update the Solaris package of FUSE to the new version (of both FUSE and Solaris that is), when the newer versions are out. So I'll be sure to help out with that too. I have been following the other thread about the new release of FUSE, I just never got around to replying in it.
I'm hoping to change my ISP in Jan 09 after CSSCGC 2008 has ended.
My current Internet provider changed the T&Cs on me a few weeks back, so that I'm now totally capped and getting very low speeds almost all of the month. This really is hindering the downloading of ISO files as well as the operation of things like the Solaris Package Manager etc.. I'll have to use systems at work instead to grab the new version of this OS.
The problem with this in the past has been that I've have wanted to work on these things at the weekend and I very often forget to bring the disk home from work, so I never have it in my hand when I need it.
I would have sorted this ISP issue before now, but there are a few complications and I didn't want to be stuck offline whilst the CGC is running.
Time for me to break out "GetRight" again for some overnight downloads.
Oh well, at least I should have it all sorted again in 2009!
PM me your address and I'll burn you an OpenSolaris 2008.11 DVD and pop it in the post to you. I'll be downloading it anyway, so no need for you to use up your bandwidth.
Thanks again, that's great!
I had another idea for this one.
To save you the trouble of posting it, I'll first try to grab the image from work straight onto my portable USB caddy. (rather than burning yet another disk and adding to the pile of Solaris disks I already downloaded at work for home use but left there!) :D
This may be better since I always mount it as a virtual device anyway , I can install it without needing to use real optical media - which is very convenient.
But if I do have any trouble getting it then I'll certainly take up your offer of posting it. I'm sure I can remember to take my 2.5" mini-USB HDD caddy into work. When I see this new version is out I'll write a small reminder on my hand or something!
The one remaining thing I need to do is free up some remaining space on my now nearly full laptop HDD, but that shouldn't be too difficult as I now have a few old versions of Linux on there that I'm never going to use again.
Forgot to mention, there's a new Solaris 10 out (10/08) as well. Sun will send you a free DVD if you ask.
Yes, in my experience Sun are good like that. I think I'll ask them for the disk as you recommend.
I remember a few years back at work, we had dropped our Solaris based systems (they had been replaced), but Sun still kept sending us out the monthly patch CD.
IIRC, we eventually contacted them, just a head's up that we no longer required the patch disks, but they still kept sending them out for years later as we were still on their systems.
Eventually, every position of the coffee table in our tea room had a Solaris patch CD on it as a coaster, so at least it was still useful to some employees!

Please post if you may be attending so we can get an idea of the numbers expected.
Daayyymmmn!! I'm right near Cardiff but I will be in the US when this is on as we have to visit the Wifes family. It's a shame it was not a few weeks earlier.

No conformation from Aowen????
Sorry, but I won't be joining . I have a meeting in Germany that day (not Spectrum).
was it something I said??
