[film] no country for old men

edited January 2009 in Chit chat
anyone else seen this? read so many conflicting reviews of this film before I watched it. my mate and his g/f lent it to me saying it was the best film since pulp fiction, and when I told my other mate I'd borrowed it he said it was the most boring film he'd ever seen!

watched it and tbh I think it's one of Cohen Bros better films, not a patch on Fargo or Big Lebowski though. very well shot and atmospheric but slightly lacking in any overall point (or maybe Im a bit thick and the 'point' went over my head). the main bad guy steals the show

I watched about half of it with my girlfriend but we just couldn't get into it so we switched it off. I think it is quite rare to get half way through a film and think to yourself "I don't really care what is going on or what is going to happen next so I might as well turn it off".

I really enjoyed it - typical Coen brothers violence with some great performances. I thought of it as a non-sci-fi version of The Terminator.

I still don't know the point of the Woody Harrelson role though - it added nothing whatsoever to the film and just seemed like some filler.

    lol, 2 conflicting views already..

agree a bit with the woody harrelson bit...hes not even listed as a star on the DVD sleeve

i thought it was an excellent film. the woody harelson character was prolly only in there as he was in the book. cut him out and the book lovers whinge, but keep him in and the film goers whinge, can't win, huh.

i thought josh brolin was super, he certainly has come a long way since goonies.

No Country for Old Men is one of the films I enjoyed most in years. For me, the best of the Cohen Brothers followed closely by Fargo.

Javier Bardem character, Anton Chigurh, has gained a place in my heart as one of the most terrible villains in cinema.

Yeah it was a good film watched it a while back, wanted to see it long before it came out at the flicks. I asked the woman in the vid shop when's it out? She looked on the computer and said it'll be at least 4 months, it's not even on the cinema yet

When I did see it was good, pretty crazy stuff.

The Woody Harrelson role i actually thought was good as i was sure he would be in the film a long time but of course wasnt which was a major surprise.

The 'baddie' is superb in the film, there a ton of talking which bored me but the action scenes are superb. Not a bad film at all but they could have cut out a good chunk

Hmmm the fact that you think the big lebowski was a good film suggests I wouldn't like this one as the big lebowski was one of the worse films I have ever watched.

exactly what I thought about the big lebowski...the first couple of times I (attempted) to watch it...seen it about 6 times now and my opinion has completely changed. I love it now, lol

I instantly thought it was great, but maybe that's because I was high as a kite the first time I watched it.

:-o I totally didn't realise that was him. He was great in this.

tbh I didn't think much of it. It was miles better than The Ladykillers though (mind you, that wasn't a proper Coen film anyways) but it's not a patch on Lebowski, O Brother and Hudsucker. Even The Man Who Wasn't There was better than this.

I keep hearing people saying that they left the ending open and you don't know what happened. But if you pay attention to Javier at the very end you'll know exactly what happened off camera.
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

    Yea the credits rolled :p
The IMDB forum for this film made some funny reading about people who thought they knew exactly what happend at the end, arguing with other people who also thought they "knew" :D

Nobody does, that's the point isn't it? I enjoyed it anyway.

yeah i didn't either till my GF told me at the end, and i pretended to know all the way through.

watch the goonies reunion after it, and he's the only one apart from chunk who seems to have changed.

weirdly, the first couple of times I saw it was at uni where me and everyone else was smoking about an eigth a day of skunk. it's only since I stopped smoking weed altogether that I have got into the film...
